Hello Elaine,
I believe that the Benjamin Chesnut in Indiana may be one of my relatives.
The Benjamin that I am talking about was a son of the Revolutionary War
soldier, John Chesnut, who was married to Patience Gumm (I think that is a
wonderful, old-timey name). I am descended from a different son. I haven't
thought about this in a long time, but I think my ancestor was named Gordon
Walker Chesnut. John and Patience moved from Virginia to Knox County,
Kentucky, near the town of London, after the Revolution. After John died in
1805, Benjamin and Patience moved to Indiana.
I don't have access to any genealogical papers right now, but the
information should be on the Internet. I joined the SAR on my descent from
John Chesnut, so my papers should be available from them.
I do not know how many different lines of Christians there are. The family
tradition in my line is that we are descended from the Christians on the
Isle of Man. This would be the same family as Fletcher Christian, of the
mutiny on the Bounty. My ancestors were planters in Virginia in the 1600s.
Best of luck in your research!
John Chesnut

On the information I have on my ancestors, My Great-great grandfather was
William H.
Chestnut. I have not yet researched Georgia or South Carolina's Arch Files,
so as it
stands right now, William Chestnut could have very well migrated from the
mid-west.
Will keep you posted as I get more.

I'm looking to find any connections to Julia Ann Chestnut b. June 12, 1812
in SC. She married William Anderson Mallory. She died Aug 31, 1901 in Union
Springs, AL. They lived in Early County, Georgia and also Stewart County,

believe this was her brother. Also living next to them was Henry Chestnut. I
would love to find Julia's parents and who her brother's and sister's were.

Hi Winona,
I have the book, but it's in Columbus, OH (we're still in Brevard Co,
FL--until probably May), or I would've sent you the info.
I tried (unsuccessfully) to determine who gave the specific middle name
(Henry) and Ga county of birth (Coweta) for John Chesnut's (my 2 grtgrand; your 1
grt). Do you know? I'm interested in knowing that as I've never found ANY
information listing him with the above. Even WBTS records for him that I
was given by a distant relative didn't belong to him (ie Aucilla Guards, or
something like that): those records belonged to John Chesnut, son of William,
who was about a decade younger than our John.

Several people have asked for the address to buy the book by A. Ray Griffin and Eloise Potter THE CHESNUTT FAMILY OF SOUTHEASTERN NORTH CAROLINA, go to the following website and order http://griffin0909.home.mindspring.com/chesnutt.html. This book is great I have given several as gifts and I also have RACKLEY A SOUTHERN COLONIAL FAMILY by Eloise Potter and Timothy Wiley Rackley, which contains information on the Chesnutt's.
Hope this is helpful to everyone.

I downloaded the information from the website address you sent. When I began
to read it, I discovered my great grandfather and grandfathers names on page
33...They spelled the last name Chesnutt and my Dad spelled it
Chesnut...John Henry Chesnut; b 1830 Coweta County GA and d 1864 in St.
Andrews, FL (my great grandfather) and James Monroe Chesnut, b 03-08-1859
and d 01-10-1929 ( my grandfather).
Thank you! I had the dates on my grandparents and I really appreciate all
this additional information.
Could you tell me where to purchase the two books you listed?

Hi, Elaine!
I am a Chesnut with Christian ancestors on my mother's side. I am descended
from the Revolutionary War soldiers John Chesnut and Capt. John Christian,
both of the Virginia militia.
I am afraid that I am not a genealogist, but it is interesting to find
someone else who has both Chesnut and Christian connections.

They were part of a group of protestants in Scotland that rebelled
against efforts to force the Scottish Presbyterian Church to fall into
line with the Church of England, which is of an episcopal nature. New
prayer books and rules had been issued and they felt it was bordering on
Popery. So they drew up a National Covenant, which was a civil agreement
everyone signed to resist the new type of worship and stick to strict
protestant teachings. This all took place between 1610 and 1640 and the
resistance group was known as the Scottish Covenanters. Many persecuted
French protestants were taking refuge in Scotland at the time and would
have signed the Covenant. A more detailed version below is from the
Internet.
"After Queen Elizabeth I was dead, Charles I and the Archbishop of
Canterbury, William Laud, felt that they could stifle the more
Protestant expressions of religion which had grown up after the
Reformation. They began to oppress the Puritans causing the 'Great
Migration' of Puritans to America in the 1630s. King Charles and the
Archbishop tried to bring the Scottish Presbyterian Church (the Kirk)
into line with the Church of England and a new Prayer Book was prepared
by the Scottish bishops, who had been reinstated in 1610 by James I.
When the new Prayer Book was first read in Edinburgh in 1637, rioting
broke out against what many Scots considered Popery. As a result a large
numbers of Scots helped to draw up the National Covenant, a civil
covenant to resist all of the new innovations in worship and it was
first signed in Grey Friar's churchyard, Edinburgh on February 28th
1638. The General Assembly of the Scottish Kirk quickly rejected both
the new Prayer Book and the episcopacy itself. Faced with this defiance,
Charles I made the fateful decision to send an army into Scotland in
what is called the First Bishops War of 1639 but his troops lacked both
money and discipline and signed a truce at Berwick-upon-Tweed without
even fighting. After obtaining some money from the English Parliament,
Charles I began the Second Bishops War in 1640 but the Scottish
Covenanters and a large army set up camp on English soil and until their
demands were met they charged Charles £850 per day for the lands upkeep."

The Chestnut name itself is French Hugeunot (protestants) and came to
England with William the Conqueror. However, Scotland and protestant
France were allies and many traveled between. Bonnie Prince Charlie fled
to France after the failed rebellion in 1745, and the Hugeunots fled to
Scotland in may cases when persecuted in France. It's not surprising
that when the Plantation of Ulster occurred and many Presbyterian Scots
immigrated to Ulster the Chestnut name went as well. These people lived
with and mixed with the Irish to become the Scots-Irish, and protestant,
with the Southern part of Ireland remaining Catholic. Originaly being a
French name, there is no clan tartan. They were never actually a
Highland Clan.
