Rhonda,
Your posting came to my e-mail just fine, so it must go to all
spellings of CHESTNUT.
Kay Chestnut
P.S. I was interested in part of your posting, but sent my comments to
a Carol Linden in B.C. Canada. Her husband is a descendant of Robert
CHESTNUT & Susan or Susanna JORDAN or JOURDAN or ---DON. of New Brunswick,
Canada, as is my husband.

I have not yet found that out. So far my father and his ancestry hailed
from Monk, Australia. It is recorded through passports as far back as
1766. That is all I have to this date, however, I am still continuing the
research.
Most of the Ches(t)nut(t)s in the USA are descended from immigrants who came from Northern Ireland, in the north of County Antrim, near Bushmills. It is believed that the Chesnuts came from Scotland to Ireland in the seventeenth century with the large Presbyterian community that migrated at that time. Large numbers of "Scotch-Irish" later migrated to the southeast Atlantic states in the early 1700s, including some Chesnuts.
There is speculation that the name is derived from a French Huguenot name. Many Huguenots fled France with the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. Some came to Scotland.
James MacLysaght wrote several books on Irish names. In one of his books, the name is said to be derived from "Chesnai" which is Old French for "oak grove." French dictionaries of names list several other possibilities, such as Chesnoit, Chesnot, Chastagnier, etc.
One researcher, Henry Chesnut, states: "I have the Chesnut line in my files proven back to Ireland, Scotland, and France . . . The original French Huguenot name was Chesne and was changed to the Scottish spelling of Chesnut when they arrived in Scotland." Henry is now deceased, and I know of no proof that carries back to France, or even Scotland. The records in Ireland for data before 1800 are sparse. I am told that there are very few Chesnuts in Scotland today, but there are many in Ireland.
The web site "French Refugees in Great Britain in the early 1700s"
(http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~frpayments/Index.htm) includes the names Chenu, Chesnu, and Chesne. The places are in England.
Norman, can you help?
Paul Chestnut

Have you thought about joining the Chesnut/Chesnutt/Chestnut DNA
project? I have heard stories that the Chesneys left France and went to
Ireland. I have also heard that there might be a Scottish connection. I
sent my husband's DNA in and it is part of the study.
