Re: Chesnut Family Cemetery Restoration, Mt. Vernon, Kentucky
David,
It was great to hear from you and of your efforts in restoring the Chesnut
Family Cemetery at Mt. Vernon, Kentucky.
My grandfathers John Chesnut (wife Patience Gum), Son Jacob (wife Margaret
Blake), Son Abraham (buried in cemetery, and his wife Charlotte Somers
Hiatt), and Charlotte Somers Hiatt Chesnut (buried in the cemetery),
established the Chesnut settlement at Mt. Vernon, Kentucky. They settled
there on land identified as the Talbot Survey of 1800.
The Family cemetery is located the Chesnut farm which is now part of the
Hi-Way 75 right a way.
I have picket fence stick pickets and other collectables from their old
farm house.
My grandmother Charlotte and Abraham are buried side by side, with
Charlotte's marker is one of the most prominent markers in the cemetery as
I recall.
As you know there are many marked graves there. Many of the graves need
fresh dirt filled-in, along with sod, where the decay of the coffins and
settling of ground has taken its toll.
There are a group of at least twenty unmarked graves in the cemetery, but
very likely many more.
As you may know there is a small group of Chesnut marked graves separated
from Charlotte Somers Hiatt Chesnut's grave known as the larger group
(larger group of graves in the center of the cemetery). This smaller group
I reference is located very close to and bordering the fence line to I 75.
I noticed that you are misspelling this family name, spelling it with a "T"
in the middle, of which is incorrect for this Family line. This family
buried here always has and still does spell their name without a "T" in the
middle, and only one "T" on the end (Chesnut).
Please use my chesnut(a)arczip.com to communicate.
Looking forward to hearing from you and talking to you further.
Best Regards In Your Task of Restoration,
Danny
