Subject: [CHESNUT] Kentucky Chesnuts
X-Brightmail: Message tested, results are inconclusive
I have recently been told of a family tree which appears on Ancestry.com
which includes a Samuel Chesnut and Mary Kane. Samuel was married also
to Mary Dunlop.
>From my own records, I know that Samuel and Mary Kane lived awhile in
Waterloo, Iowa. Samuel disappeared shortly after the birth of twins in
1868. These twins were named James David and Eleanor. There were two
older brothers also--named Henry Edmund and George--when Mary Elinor died
in the 1870s. Mary Elinor Kane was from the Isle of Man. Samuel was
from Northern Ireland.
(This given name of Samuel for Mr. Chesnut has only just recently been
told to me by a person who got it from the family tree on Ancestry.com.
I have been searching for years for his name! I did find some years ago
a Samuel Chesnut immigrating on the same ship with a Mary Kane, but could
not know for sure if these were my relatives.)
I have written for information about the Chesnut family to the author of
the family tree on Ancestry.com and received no reply. Is there anyone
on this list who knows more about this family. The author of the family
tree including Samuel and Mary (Elinor) Kane is in Kentucky. I am a
descendant of James David Chesnut, living in Houston, Texas. I assume
that the family of Samuel is centered in Kentucky.
James David and Eleanor when orphaned went to live in Missouri with
relatives from the Isle of Man named Moore and Cannell. I assume these
were relatives of the mother, Mary Elinor Kane.
Eleanor grew up to attend Park College in Missouri. She became a doctor
and missionary to China where she died as a martyr with other
missionaries in 1905. I have all the information that is available about
her from Park College.
Hoping to find someone who can tell me about the origins of Samuel and
Mary Kane, and also about the descendant family members related to them.
Who was Mary Dunlop? A Kentuckian?
Thanks. Charlene

Traditional notes by Dick Glasgow
DOES anyone in Mosside remember a James and Mary Chestnut, who used to live
in the village, but emigrated to Valley Steam (Long Island) New York, in
1922?
If so, you will be amazed to learn that I received an e-mail letter from
their grandson, Pete Small, just last week.
Pete was browsing through my website at:
www.causewaymusic.co.uk when he came upon a mention of a Mosside Fiddler by
the name of Frank Simpson on my Local Heroes page.
Fascinated by this, he felt he had to write to me and pass on as much as he
could remember of Frank, from stories his Grandparents told him.
You may be interested to learn that Pete's mother, Mary Ann, a daughter of
James and Mary Chestnut, was born in New York, and is still alive and well
and living in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Among Pete's Grandfather's seven brothers and sisters was Alexander, better
known as Alex and a great friend and fishing partner of Frank Simpson's.
Alex was the Mosside Schoolmaster, and his nickname was simply 'The Master'.
Alex was apparently a great man for yarns and history, and was always proud
to relate the fact that the 25th President of the United States of America,
President McKinley, was related to the McKinley's who owned a nearby farm,
which the Bush ran through, and which both Alex and Frank used to fish
regularly together.
Pete recently acquired a newspaper article from over thirty years ago,
written by Speedy Moore, of the Chronicle, which was published in 1962, in
which there was a great photograph of Frank Simpson with his 'beloved'
fiddle, and also one of 'The Master'.
This article tells that Frank Simpson was the rural Postman for Mosside and
that his favoured music on the Fiddle was Country and Western music.
It also spoke of his favourite haunt, the Laydside Tavern in Mosside, owned
by an Essie. It was also fascinating to learn that Essie's was a popular
place for folk to hear music and Scots and Irish Ballads being sung around
the open fire.
I'd say Mosside has changed a little since 1922 when James and Mary Chestnut
left for New York. I'm sure Alex Chestnut would be sad too, to see the
school now closed. Times change I know, but change is not always for the
best, is it?
If you have any stories or information on other North Antrim musicians of
the past, or if you can tell me any more about Essie and her Laydside Tavern
I'd love to hear.
Please pass your information on to me and I'll happily add it to my web page
and/or tell the good readers of this column too.
In this electronic age we now live, it's a very small world indeed, isn't
it. It is really fascinating to hear these stories of men of yesteryear,
from someone on the other side of the world.
If any reader would like to contact Pete Small, especially if you have any
information on any of the above mentioned people or places, please get in
touch with me at 028 207 51746 or e-mail DickGlasgow(a)causewaymusic.co.uk
Enjoy yer music.
