Subject: [CHESNUT] Status on Chesnutt Book Project
Hi Friends,
I wanted to give you an update on the Chesnutt genealogy project I advised
you about almost a year ago. For new members to the list, I'll offer a
brief summary of the project and then update you all on the status.
Summary:
A major genealogy of the descendants of Alexander Chesnutt (d. 1690) of Isle
of Wight Co., VA. Five of his children migrated to Southeastern North
Carolina--Duplin and Sampson counties. The work is the result of some 25
years of work by Eloise Potter and Ray Griffin and will result in the first
comprehensive genealogy on this large family group. Descendants have moved
to practically every state in the nation and in the early years of the
dispersal, moved into SC, GA, FL, AL, MS, TX. The book will be about 700
pages, 8 1/2 x 11, hard bound, acid free paper, indexed, photos, maps, and
references. It will also have Appendices on many important associated
family groups including: Murphrey, Robinson, Hollingsworth, etc.
Status:
Eloise and I are now working on proofing the manuscript and indexing. It is
our goal to finish this work within the next 6 months and to publish by
summer 2003.
This has been a time consuming project of prodigious porportions and I
appreciate your patience while it is being finalized. As Eloise and I told
each other the other month, we can finally see light at the end of the
tunnel with the project.
Many of you have asked to be placed on our mailing list when we mail out
flyers. If you've previously requested this, then you're already on the
list.
If you have questions or want to be on the mailing list, please email me via
this list or at griffin0909(a)earthlink.net
Thanks!

Dear Norman,
Thanks so much for the 1st Kilraghts information. PRONI doesn't list them
among the records held when I checked the web sight and I don't recall
finding a listing when I was in Belfast. I only had half a day to visit
PRONI when I was in Belfast in 2000. I need to check 1st Kilraghts for Boyds
and McConaghy (ie) names. Do you know if copies of the microfilm can be
purchased from the public record house?
Thanks again for the info. Do you know of any Chesnut families in Antrim?
I'm assuming your line and my Dungorbery Chesnuts are probably connected. I
just don't know how.
Best regards,
Carolyn

Greetings from Ireland
I would be very interested to know of the source of the material about John
Chesnut b. ca. 1665 in Scotland or Northern Ireland. Hard genealogy data is
difficult to find here because of the destruction of records in the early
1900s. From before 1650 there is only 1 Chesnut record that I am aware of. A
gravestone at Derrykeighan in North Antrim. Just yesterday I found the
source of an innaccurate reading of this stone. My reading is "Heare lyeth
ye body of Samual Chasnut who departed this life 17th Dec 1734. As also
??iz? Chasnut his (wife?)" It had previously been reported as giving his age
as 17.
There is a John Chestnutt in a list of householders in Ballymoney in 1766.
Another Chesnut we know of (also named Samuel of the same place) made a
will in 1777 and died in 1783. There is a copy of the will at
http://www.parkesfamily.btinternet.co.uk/wills.htm
I should mention that there is a Chesnutt family of South west Donegal for
which mid 1700s references exist. Favourite names in that family were also
William and John as with the Antrim families.

Knox County, KY Church Records
Cumberland River Church minutes for the first Saturday in April, 1812. "Church met according to adjournment and after worship proceeded to buiness. 1st. Brother Elijah Foley made it known to the Church that he with a number of other Brothern met at the house of JOHN CHESNUT and met in Church order and received Lucy Arthur and Ann Arthur by experience and was approved of by the church."
The Cumberland River Church was a Baptist Church formed in 1804 with Elijah Foley as its pastor. It was very influential in forming new churches in old Knox County (which was all of southeastern Kentucky at the time.) They had an outreach or missionary purpose. They met in the homes of outlying people interested in joining the church but who were too far away for it to be convenient. When they got enough converts, they found a minister and created a church there. It remained an "arm" of the CRC until it got to the place where it could demonstrate that it was capable of going it alone. A church was formed in the area mentioned. I believe it was the Concord church, but I would have to check. That church became a large one very quickly (75 members when it was constituted as an independent church by the CRC).

Witnessed by Benjamin Chesnut and Levin Adams. An Abraham Chesnut was listed as a sibling of Jacob and Benjamin, so he is probably the same person.
On November 26, 1808 James Blake of Knox Co., KY, sold ABRAHAM CHESNUT 200 acres for $300, the land being part of the John Talbot 2,500 acre survey on Little Laurel River. Witnessed by Luke Watkins, Benjamin Chesnut, John Chesnut, ?Chapman Watkins, and James ?Rice.
