Friends, I have transcribed a family group sheet compiled by my paternal
aunt ca. 1965. It concerns the descendents of Jane Chestnut b. 1770 in
Antrim Co., Ireland, who married William McQuiston and came to Fairfield
Co., SC, where William subsequently died ca. 1800. These McQuistons
traveled to Preble Co., OH ca. 1829 and founded Hopewell Church with other
families who had come over on the same boat. I do not have my aunts
sources, but her sheet contains several generations and lots of birth
dates, marriage dates etc. which have so far meshed well with other
research. I have Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Word versions available for
any who want them. Email me at writefocus(a)att.net to request a copy.

Hi Lee,
I only suspect that John's father was the Alexander in 1850 census w/ wife
(recall her name was Margaret Jane), but have no proof. My John's death is
also a mystery: supposedly died on PC Beach during Civil War ca 1862-1864;
his friend went to get help, but body was gone when they came back (accd. to
family history). Anyway, no death certificate for John, and no will info for
Alexander that I've been able to find.
My John apparently left Santa Rosa Co. after 1850 (think he's the John w/
Mary age 15--his wife?-- in 1850) and by 1860 is in Washington Co., FL w/ Ann
Eliza (Pippen--his wife--2nd one?) and mother (widow of Alexander). By 1870
he, of course, is dead and wife is remarried (ironically, to the "friend" who
went to get help on PC Bch during Civil War). All very, very confusing!!!!
There was also a Kinchen Chesnut who was in FL in 1835 (Washington
Co.--covered almost all of panhandle at that time), by 1840 in Covington Co.,
AL and by 1850 in MIssissippi (relying on memory here, but that's pretty
close). Looked at him as a possible bro/cousin to those older Santa Rosa Co.
Chesnut men--nothing to confirm though. There were also two Chesnut men
(can't remember names at the moment) who were in Early Co or Clay Co, GA in
the 1830's.
I bring all of this up to let you know that I've tried to establish a
connection among the Chesnut men of Santa Rosa Co.--somehow they're all
related. Prob. is trying to confirm that connection. Sure wish we could
find some will/probate, etc. info.!
If you come across any connection, please let me know. Will do the same for
you.

Lee
Hi Lee,
I think we wrote sometime back as I recall your e-mail address. YES, I'm
researching those Chesnuts in Santa Rosa and Walton Cos., FL as my JOHN
Chesnut (b. ca 1832 GA) is somehow related to all of them. Am still trying
to figure out how. Do you have any ideas? Seems as though there were older
bros who migrated together w/ their families before 1850, and one of them
must have passed away by teh 1850 census (ie Mrs. Chesnut w/ children).
Anyway, seems as though all of them were in AL and GA at sometime before
1850, too (recalling form memory here, don't have all the census records in
front of me at the moment).
Have been searching for my John's origins for well over a decade. Am
speculating that he's from the DAVID Chesnut (of NC) who migrated down into
GA, but have no proof.
If we pool our efforts, maybe we can figure this one out?

Don:
Emily and I are so sorry to hear of the death of Dr. Gordon Walker, but we
feel very greatful that we did get to know him in the last years of his
life.
We spent a wonderful couple of hours with him a few weeks before the Chesnut
Reunion three years ago, and we were so impressed with his beautiful and
kind spirit, his knowledge of Chesnut genealogy and his generosity. It was
wonderful to have him and to have you in attendance and participating in
that memorable event.
So we will join others who knew and admired our Chesnut cousin, Gordon
Walker, in treasuring our memories of him.
Incidentally, several of us who are descendents of Granville R. and Julina
Graybeal Chesnut met in Torrington WY a couple of weeks ago for a family
get-together at the area where our grandparents and their children
homesteaded in 1908. Five of seven living first cousins were in attendance
as well as a number of the next generation. My brother, Gene Chenette,
<echenette!yahoo.com> has the details.
With all best wishes.

Seeking ancestors of Uriah Chestnut who married Cynthia Burgess 20 December
1855 in Lowdes Co., Mississippi. They had two childen, Anna Jane and James
Uriah. Anna Jane give her birthplace as Alabama on a census record.
Cynthia and the two children were listed on the 1870 Maury Co. TN as head
of household. Have not been able to find the family on any 1860 census.
I do not know when Uriah died or where he died. He may have been from LA.
Any help appreciated.

There were at least two distinct groups of Chesnutts in Virginia. The
Alexander Chesnutt of Isle of Wight County (d. 1690) has only one documented
son, John Chesnutt. He appears to have arrived in IOW in the 1680s when he
purchased 50 acres. He does not show up on a headright's list.
I find Thomas Chesnut in neighboring Surry County during the same era;
however, I have been unable to establish kinship, although the names in this
family are the same as in the Alexander family of IOW. Interestingly, it
appears that both Thomas and Alexander were weavers/tailors.
The Alexander Chesnutt of Augusta County, VA appears to be from a different
group of Chesnutts--at least to the point that I have not been able to link
that group with the IOW group. Here again, the names seem to be the same in
both families, but again, I've not been able to establish kinship. I do
know that in the 1750s five of John Chesnutt's sons migrated to
Duplin/Sampson County, NC. His sixth son, John II, purchased John I's
property ca 1750 and I haven't been able to track him further.

Frank David was born in 1865 and died in 1921. He is buried in Lucedale
Alabama.
There are no dates on the headstone of W.P. so I am at a loss on dates for
him.
He is buried along side Frank David. I tried looking up birth records from
Florence,
however they only begin in 1915. Is Florence in Horry County? The spelling
on
W.P.'s stone is Chestnutt........any info you have would be helpful. Thanks
Sandra
You state that you have the Chestnuts in the 1600's in Virginia. My line is
William Palmer II who married Jennie Chestnut in 1790.
Her father was William Chestnut b Abt 1727 in Va?
His father William Chestnut b Abt 1690 in Scotland?
His father John Chestnut b about 1664 in Scotland?
I have no other information on them. Jennie was married, born and died in
Augusta County, Virginia - I think. Do you have information on her and her
family?

Jasper was born 1840 Stewart Co. GA to a Mrs. Chestnut and ?????
He moved to Florida sometime before 1850. He's found in the 1850 Santa Rosa
Co. FL census. He's buried at Almarante Cem. Laurel Hill, Okaloosa Co. FL.
On his headstome it reads, Jos. Chestnut Co. "C" 1st FL Cav CSA.
He m. 1st Elizabeth Morrison? 2nd Catherine Hurst? (Hersey on license).
Jasper and Elizabeth had a son named John. Did John m. Margaret Lawhorn?
Jasper and Catherine had Mary Ann, William, Caroline, Josephine (Josie),
James, and Matilda.
Did Mary Ann m. William Ellard?
Who did William marry?
Caroline m. Wiley Morrell.
Josie m. Thomas Crain.
And James m. Minnie?
Is anyone researching these surnames?
Lee
HI Sandra,
A quick look into my database does not show a WP Chestnut or a Frank David
Chestnut. I will look more closely at the variant spellings of the surname
tomorrow and will also ask my Chesnutt book partner, Eloise, to check her
files. A branch of our family group did move into the Horry Co., SC area
which would seem to make your two men likely descendants. Do you have dates
for these two men's birthdays and/or death dates?
I've been doing Chesnutts since the mid 1980s and Eloise has been working on
them since the 1970s. We agreed to collaborate in 1996 and are HOPEFUL that
our book will be sent to the publishers within the next 12 months. I've
written two books--one large book on my Griffins and one smaller supplement
on my book as I was able to trace the family back to the early 1600s in
Virginia.
I look forward to hearing back from you.

Hi,
My name is Fred E. Chesnut Jr. My father Fred Sr. was born in Gadsen. My
father passed away in 1994, but my mother is still alive.
She is 80, and I talked to her last night about your message. She says that
she met Clyde and Doshia when they were are on motorhome trips in the
1970's. She said I met them too, when I flew out for a family reunion about
1973--- I don't remember. We live in California, where my Dad settled
after going to WW2 in the Pacific. I have been looking at this site on the
internet for about 6 years and have never seen anything about Chesnuts in
ALABAMA until now. I am 47 yrs. old and still raising 3 kids, so I have
just watched and observed--thinking that I would get down to really
researching this later when I have time.Anyway, I am excited about
your contact. Let's keep in touch, my mom say's she even has pictures of
Clyde and Doshia.I will get them , scan them and send to you.
Why don't you call me and we can talk?

I am sorry to report that Dr. V. Gordon Walker passed away 13 June 2001.
I have been away on business and didn't learn about his death till this past
weekend. Many of you remember Gordon at the Chesnut/Chestnut reunion
in Kentucky several years ago and many of you know him for his genealogical
research on the Chesnut family. Gordon was my first cousin, once removed.
His grandfather was Pleasant L. Chesnut of Laurel County, KY. The following
is his obituary in the Lexington [KY] Herald-Leader published 15 June 2001.
Virgil Gordon Walker, DDS, 89, Berea, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001 at
his residence. He was born at Lida, Laurel Co. [KY], April 22, 1912, son of
the late David Lawrence and Sallie Chesnut Walker. He was a 1929 graduate
of Sue Bennett Memorial High School, a 1935 graduate of University of
Louisville School of Dentistry. Following graduation, he spent a year at Berea
College Hospital as assistant college dentist. The two following years he
spent in private practice in Berea before being commissioned to the rank of
First Lieutenant in the US Army Dental Corps, 1938, where he served his
country until retiring with the rank of Colonel, 1962. The next ten years were
spent in private practice in Berea before he retired again. Pre-retirement and
post-retirement Dr. Walker was active in many civic clubs and organizations
including, Union Church, American Dental Assn., Kentucky Dental Assn.,
Psi Omega Dental Fraternity, Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Fraternity,
Sons of the American Revolution, serving as state president for one term,
Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, life member of Kentucky
Historical Society, Laurel Co. Historical Society, Sons of the Revolution, and
past member of Berea Garden Club. He was an avid woodworker, and an avid
genealogist, having traced five direct lines to Revolutionary War ancestors.
Survivers include one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. John David and Ruth Gregory
Walker, Berea; grandson, David Lewis Walker, Louisville; grandaughter,
Jennifer
Susan Walker, Lexington; two sisters, Irene Walker Brown, Clinton, TN, Hazel
Walker Morgan, Pineville; as well as numberous relatives and friends. In
addition
to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of fifty-seven
years,
Mary Gay Walker. Funeral serviced 3 p.m. today at Reppert Funeral Home,
Berea, with Rev. Kent Gilbert officiating. Visitation today 1 p.m. until
time of
service. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to MEPCO
Home Health Agency or Union Church.
