Greetings Don: I hope you are right. In your list for Joseph L Chesnut, his spouse was Emma Nelson. Nelson was Emma's Mother's maiden name so keeping fingers crossed. I'll let you know when I find out more. Barb
Dear Don,
Oct. 27, 1891, D.L. Chesnut and wife Mary F. of Corbin, Whitley Co., KY,
sold T.E.B. Siler two certain lots or parcels of land, lying and being
situate in Chesnuts Addition to the town of Corbin, Ky, a plat of which
addition is of record in the County Clerks Office of Whitley Co., KY, for
$200. Page 300, Whitley Co. Court Deed book, 1891.
There was another one to Charles Finley on page 302, and one on page 318 to
the Corbin Land Company for $10,000.
Corbin Improvement Company: T.E.B. Siler, President, D.L. Chesnut,
Vice-President, and Charles Finley, Secy & Treasurer (sell to J.A. Renfro
one of the lots DLC sold earlier to Siler). Several other sales follow. On
page 432, DLC shells out $2,350 for 63 acres on Lynn Camp Creek. [Lynn Camp
is adjacent to Corbin.]
July 1, 1891, S.A. Chestnut and wife Mary sold D.T. Chesnut a parcel of
land lying between lands of D.T. Chesnut and James Brafford place for $140.
Dec. 11, 1891, D.T. Chesnut and M.F. Chesnut his wife and C.M. Chesnut and
Margaret J. Chesnut his wife sold to Stephen A. Chesnut for $500 a parcel
of land
July 28, 1891, The Gatliff and Chesnut (looks like) Coner Co. sold to
D.T.Chesnut for $1500 "all the land owned by them on west side of land at
R.R. at Corbin Ky., being four half-acre lots .." "Coner" appears in
several places. Not "Coal."
The odd word I noted above was an abbreviation for Commercial:
A. Gatliff, C.M. Chesnut, D.T. Chesnut, J.R. Sampson and A.W. Francis
incorporating as Gatliff and Chesnut Commercial Company $25,000 in $1,000
shares. Store or stores for selling general merchandise, lumber, cross
ties, etc. June 4, 1889.
D.T. may have continued to own stock in the Corbin Improvement Company, but
he ceased being listed as an officer. He set up his own Corbin Land
Company. He continued to have sales and purchases throughout the 90's,
sometimes in his own name, sometimes through the Corbin Land Company. A
mover and shaker as Corbin grew with the railroad.
