Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Norman,
I would really like to have a copy of anything you've done.
Sure hope to get over there someday to meet you.

Norman,
I would really like to see a map showing the distribution of Chesnuts in
Ireland when you get a chance to make one. This is something that I have
never understood that I think would be really interesting. I guess you
could put an "X" for each Chesnut, or you could use different colors or
shading to show the approximate number of Chesnuts in different areas. I
hope you will keep this idea in mind. Thanks.

Or our e-mails don't do what we thought. I had added the term -request to all my
lists when I unsubed for vacation. To my surprise when I returned my computer
must have reverted to original addresses and everything was sent to the lists.
Then I get all kinds of mail insulting my mentality. Thanks for being
understanding.

Pension claims made by people who reached 70 in the years 1908 to 1922
survive and can be used as 'census substitutes' for the census returns
destroyed in Ireland in 1916 and in1922. Census search officers were
employed to check the claims against the census returns. Some details have
already been posted to the list of the claims held at the Public Record
Office of Northern Ireland and some claims now reside in the National
Archives in Bishop Street, Dublin. There is a detailed index on the census
shelves of the main search room. The reference numbers are CEN/S/1/xxx.
Two claims (numbers 495 and 856) seem to relate to the same claimant.
856. Claimant: Elizabeth Chesnut (10 Dec 1921) Address: 99 Middleton Street,
Ibrox, Glasgow. Information from claimant: Parents were John Chesnut and
Nancy Chesnut (Mullan). of Moss-side village. The search officer reported
that the family was not found.
495. Claimant: Elizabeth Chestnut (21 June 1920) Address: Secretary, Board
of Health, Edinburgh. Information from claimant: Born 1850, parents were
John Chestnut and Nancy Chestnut (McMullan) of Glassaneeran townland, Billy
Parish. The search officer found John Chestnut age 25, not married, a
servant with James Coaghrain of Loughlynch townland in 1851 census.
860. Claimant: James McBride (13 March 1917). Address: LGB Edinburgh.
Information from claimant: Parents were John McBride and Betty McBride
(Chesnut). The search officer found (1851 census) in Union workhouse,
Ballycastle, Ramoan Parish. Elizabeth McBride who was a widow, married in
1838. Children: Charles (14), James (12), Catherine (8), Mary (5) and Hugh
(5).

Below I have included the beginning of our family's line; it is essentially
the same as the information which you just posted. I will send an attachment
to you which is a little more complete.
Revision 4/17/2000
Descendants of: JAMES CHESTNUT (Born 1813 in County Antrim, Ireland)
The earliest ancestor which our family currently has a record for, is:
-- James Chestnut (1813-1900); and his wife Jane (1822-1900).
In 1917, in the town of Ballymoney, in County Antrim, Ireland -- a woman
by the name of Mary Jane Milreavy (Wilson?) applied for a Government pension.
During the processing of her claim, it was necessary for the authorities to
validate her statements; this included a check of where she lived at the
time of the 1851 Census. Mrs. Milreavy stated that she was living with the
family of James and Jane Chestnut. A record search was done, and the
Chestnut family was found and noted on the application. James, Jane and 5
children are listed with their ages on Jan. 1, 1851. This was fortunate, as
later, most of these records were destroyed.
The second document that mentions James and Jane Chestnut is on a birth
registry for Alexander Chestnut, born November 3,
1864, at Ballymoney, to James and Jane Wilson Chestnut.
The third and fourth documents that we have are the death certificates
of James Chestnut on March 22, 1900; and Jane Chestnut
on March 30, 1900 in the town of Roseyards, in County Antrium,
Ireland.
( I am indebted to Mr. Norman Parks of Belfast, Ireland; and
Ms. Dianne Fox of Victoria, Australia,
for generously sharing their information with me.)
Generation No. 1
JAMES CHESTNUT, [C1], was born in 1813 in Upper Dunluce Barony, Ballymoney
Parish, Kirkhills (Townland), County Antrim, Ireland. He died March 22,
1900 in Upper Dunluce Barony, Ballymoney Parish, Roseyards (Townland),
County Antrim, Ireland.
He married JANE WILSON (daughter of David Wilson and Jane Taylor) about 1840
in Ireland. She was born in 1822; and died on March 30, 1900 at Roseyards.
They may have had as many as 14 children; -- 9 have been documented. (The
additional 5 children that are believed to be part of this family, have no
convincing documentation, that is currently known of, to prove this
connection.)
Children of JAMES CHESTNUT and JANE WILSON are:
I. JAMES (SMITH?) CHESTNUT, born March 14, 1841, County Antrim, Ireland;
died January 17, 1922, in South Attleboro,
Mass. or Pawtucket, RI? Buried in Central Falls
Cemetery, Central Falls, Rhode Island, USA.
II. JOSEPH CHESTNUT, born about 1843, County Antrim, Ireland; m.
AGNES SCOTT, June 1867. (In the 1901 Census,
this may be the Joseph who lived at 37 Castle Street?)
III. MARY CHESTNUT, born March 7, 1847, in Belfast?, County
Antrim, Ireland; died July 9,1933 in Australia.
married ALEXANDER McCONAGHY, New South Wales,
Australia.
IV. JANE CHESTNUT, born about 1848, County Antrim. Ireland.
(No additional information)
V. ELLEN CHESTNUT, born about 1851, County Antrim. Ireland (Not found in
1901 Census. Was in Ire. in 1921-unmarried)
VI. ANNE CHESTNUT, born about 1851.
VII. MATILDA CHESTNUT, born About 1853; m. Mr. WARWICK .
(James & Jane died 1900 -- their " . . . deaths
were reported by daughter Matilda Warwick")
VIII. THOMAS BOYD CHESTNUT, born About 1855,
Ireland/Scotland?; died August 25, 1924, in Sydney, NSW, Australia.
married. MARIA O'NEIL, July 03, 1879, Pawtucket,
Rhode Island, USA.
(More About THOMAS BOYD CHESTNUT:

and that he was born in "Scotland".
Fact 4: Thomas Boyd may have had 3 wives? Maria O'Neil, --
Elizabeth Hamilton? Marie Theresa Landrigan?
Fact 5 It appears that he immigrated to the US before age
24. (Then possibly to Australia?)
IX. ELIZABETH CHESTNUT, born in 1856, in County Antrim,
Ireland; died in NSW, Australia.
(Elizabeth was sponsored by her brother Thomas, to
immigrate to Australia in 1880.)
X. NICK CHESTNUT, born ___ (date unknown).

XIII. ALEXANDER CHESTNUT, born November 03, 1864, in Cupindale, County
Antrim, Ireland.
XIV. JANE (OR MANNA) CHESTNUT, born September 1869 (Record of
birth found in LDS site by Anne Duff).(???)
Generation No.2
JAMES CHESTNUT, [C2] (JAMES1) was born March 14, 1841 in County Antrim,
Ireland; and died January 17, 1922 in South Attleboro, Mass/Pawtucket, R.I.?
Buried in Central Falls Cemetery. He married SARA JANE MCCULLY about
1860-1862.; (Possibly in Boston, Mass.?)
(More About JAMES CHESTNUT, [C2]:
Fact 1: James immigrated to the US in 1855, at the age of 14. noted on
the 1905 Census of Rhode Island form-Providence
(it's possible that he landed in Boston.)
Fact 2: Died in 1922, Smithfield/Lincoln/Central Falls, Rhode Island --

Dear List,
LIST AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE -- DO NOT MISS IT
I have started a data base of all Irish Chestnuts, all spellings using
mainly all of Norman's wonderful transcriptions, civil registration index,
certificates I have and letters I have received over the years.
These are all the oldest Chestnuts who appear on the civil registration
death index. Can you help me identify any of them? If you hold any other
information from certificates or any information at all I would love to
hear from you. A little down the track I will have to work out how to
publish this information over the list. Any suggestions on this.
I would also be interested in knowing how many of us go back to Ireland and
when approximately. This may be an interesting thing to collate and
publish on the list also just to give us all a quick note all together.
Not sure that there are that many that actually get some one back to
Ireland.
Will know in a couple of days.

The list gives the family name, First name, position in household, date of
birth, place of birth and place of residence in the 1881 UK census. The data
was obtained from LDS index discs. Interesting how many were born in
Ireland. Also family born in Poland. The Irish returns for the 1881 census
were destroyed in the early part of the last century. I'm happy to mail the
full returns of any (or all!!) of those listed here. Just ask. Best wishes -

Please forgive my ignorance, but can you tell me what cities the
abreviations represent?
I assume Irel is Ireland, but not sure of the others.
