Good afternoon Norman,
My name is Frank Daniel Chestnut; my family is from the R.I and Mass. area.
I have read several of your postings in the past; but the 2 that caught my
eye were your:
#1 Valuation of Ireland 1861 Ballymon ["Norman Parkes" <N.Parkes(a)tesco.ne]
and
#2 From: "Norman Parkes" <N.Parkes(a)tesco.net>
To: CHESNUT-L(a)rootsweb.com
Subject: Joseph, Mary and Ellen, Ballymoney, Co Antrim
HELLO DANIEL - GREETINGS FROM IRELAND
This is where I am stuck. I have my great-grandfather JAMES Chestnut
married to Sara JANE McCaulley.
I have my grandfather and grandmothers marriage certificate; and that is my
only evidence of James and Sara Jane.
James Chestnut (with the middle "t" included) was born about 1850 to 1860 in
County Antrim.
He married Sara Jane McCaulley who was born about 1850 to 1860 in County
Antrim.
MY EYE HAS CAUGHT ONLY THREE POSSIBILITIES IN MY NOTES There may well be
more!
JAMES CHESNUT b 1 APRIL 1860, PARENTS THOMAS CHESNUT and MARGARET MCSHANE.
SIBLINGS: ROBERT (8 JUNE 1856), THOMAS (10 JUNE 1858) and ISABELLA (23 DEC
1861) St James Presbyterian Church Ballymoney.
WILLIAM JAMES CHESTNUT (MARCH 1852) son of NATHANIEL of MOYCRAIG TOWNLAND.
Mosside Presbyterian Church
JAMES CHESTNUT (21 FEB 1854) son of JAMES of MOYCRAIG TOWNLAND. Mosside
resbyterian Church. I THINK THAT BILL HAWK and PAUL CHESTNUT , BOTH LIST
MEMBERS, ARE RELATED TO JAMES OF MOYCRAIG.
MY SEARCHES SO FAR HAVE BEEN CONFINED TO THE REGION AROUND BALLYMONEY IN
COUNTY ANTRIM. MY MATERNAL GRANDMOTHER CAME FROM THERE
The family record (a few notes) states that they both died in Central Falls,
Rhode Island. I have not been able to find any record of them in Central
Falls; although it is reasonable, as that is where my grandfather Joseph
Chestnut was born, about 1884.
I do not know how to proceed to find out when James and Sara Jane came to
the US? From what area of County Antrim? What ship? Where did they land?
etc.
HAVE A LOOK AT THE FRONT PAGE OF http://www.rootsweb.com/ for lists of
emigrants and ships.
I have followed several of my mothers lines back to the mid 1600s; but am
stopped dead with my Dads family.
YOU ARE VERY LUCKY TO HAVE RECORDS FROM SO FAR BACK IN TIME. MOST CHURCH
RECORDS HERE START AT ABOUT 1830. ALL OUR CENSUS DATA FROM BEFORE 1901 HAS
BEEN DESTROYED.
Once, when I was about 10, I had asked my Dad and grand father about the
family; they said: "Oh, you dont want to know about them there were 3
brothers that were "horse-thieves"; 2 got caught and hung; the other escaped
to America." I have no idea if there was any truth to the statement; or if
they were just joking with me???
I THINK THEY WERE JOKING. THE GOOD FOLK OF BALLYMONEY WOULD NEVER DO SUCH A
THING.
I am hoping that you might be able to give me a direction to look; It would
be very much appreciated.
YOUR BEST BET IS TO CIRCULATE WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW ON THIS E-MAIL FORUM AND
POST TO THE WEB FORUM AT http://genforum.genealogy.com/chestnut/
Also, I noticed that you were replying to Dianne; Im sure that it would be
to coincidental for her to be working on the same family???
THERE WERE (IN THE 1800s) A LARGE NUMBER (100) OF CHESTNUTs LIVING IN COUNTY
ANTRIM. THE SPELLING VARIES - CHESNEY, CHESNUT etc. IT MAY BE THAT AT A MORE
DISTANT TIME THERE WERE FEWER FAMILIES.
Thanks for any help.
F. Daniel Chestnut

It is nice to meet you Euretta - greetings from Ireland.
I have to tell you that we suffer from a severe lack of genealogy records
here. All the census data collected from before 1901 was destroyed either by
accident or by government order. The churches here really started to keep
records seriously from about 1840. A very few exist from before 1830. There
are some lists of individuals compiled before 1800 but they contain no
family data. Visit the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland web site
for some details. http://proni.nics.gov.uk/
Your best bet would be to post what you know on this e-mail forum (I take
the liberty of forwarding it for you) and there is a WWW based Chesnut forum
at http://genforum.genealogy.com/chestnut/
You may also like to visit the home pages of two of the list members:

join this organization, we are looking for information on his family &
don't know where to start. His fathers name is William Chesnut, I
believe he is from the Texas area. His father was also William. My
husband has a uncle Edwin. His mother's name was Aurora Cox, She is from
the No. Dakota area. I might be able to come up with a little more
information when my husband is available. If you or some one else can
help me I would be very grateful. I have no idea where to start.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

I need help from Pennsylvania Chesnutt/Chestnuts. My husbands
grandfather's name was Robert Roy Chesnutt. He was born 9/30/1902 in
Mahoning, PA and died 10/22/1989 in Rochester, MHN. He was married to a
Garnet Ruth Adams born 9/29/1906 in Templeton, PA and died 1/23/1990 in
Rochester, MN. They had one son Robert Paul.
Robert Roy's father was Thomas Patton Chesnutt and his mother was Ada
Farster, both of PA.
If anyone knows of this family please send me a lead. I can't find info
on this PA family.

I am new to this business of geneological research, and I am pursuing
various branches of my family. My great-great grandfather was James
Chestnut, who emigrated to this country in 1837, according to family legend.
He settled in Philadelphia, in the Kensington area. He was, according to
family legend, a tailor, but there is no evidence to support this belief.
His wife was Eliza Adams.
James and Eliza had a son named John Henry Wirtz Chestnut, who went to
the U of Pennsylvania and became a doctor. John H. W. Chestnut married Susan
Linda Faunce, and they had five children, James, John, Charles, Frank and
Mary. James was my grandfather, also a doctor.
I know enough about my grandfather, little about his siblings, less
about his father, and just about nothing about the original James.
Somewhere, floating around in my house or my brother's, there is a battered
bible belonging to him that is inscribed with his name and his town of
origin, which was Ballywat. I do not find Ballywat on a current highway map
of Ireland. I have been reading with interest the e-mails from N. Parkes,
who seems to have a fix on the tribe, many of whom came from other towns with
the prefix of "Bally".
I would be interested to hear from anyone who can shed some light on the
original Chestnut. I would also like to pursue the Faunce line, but that is
a matter for another time and another list, if there is one.
