Rufus BAKER was the son of Barton R. BAKER and Hettie CHESNUT. He was born
May 10, 1869 in Laurel County, KY. He married Nannie A. BROCK on December 10,
1892. They had one daughter, Ethel BAKER, born on February 20, 1894.
According to Barton R. BAKER's family Bible, Rufus died November 22, 1894 "on
a sleeping care near Chattanooga, Tennessee."
Does anyone know the details of this death, and where Rufus was buried? Also
would appreciate any information regarding his daughter, Ethel BAKER.
Thanks!
Patty

Eller the little daughter of James and Rebecca Chesnut, was born March 3,
1899, and died October 13, 1900. Although little Eller was a beautiful
little baby her stay on earth was short and by her death the fact has again
been proven that "The Lord loveth and the Lord Taketh away."
Letter From Chester Humfleet to Dan Humfleet, given to
Robert Helton by Mr.Humfleet:
March 5, 1969
Dear Dan:
I received your letter today and I should have written to you sooner.
I examined the Knox Co. record of marriages and found that Grandfather
and Elizabeth were married in 1874. In the record book where the clerk
recorded in his own handwriting, he spelled HEAL S. SPRINKLE and
ELIZABETH UMFLEET. Witness Perry and Johnathan Humfleet.
Minister John Blair.
Grandfather and Granny Liz are both buried at Mt. Olivet. Our
grandmother
is buried at the Campground (Boreing).
I do not know when he died. I don't believe there is any marker with
dates,
Flossie Jarvis might know when he died....
She (Florence Humfleet) was married in 1917 (to Walter H. Jarvis)
and I think fairly closer to his death.
Bruce was married Sept 2, 1907 (Charles Bruce Humfleet)
Jesse Parker and Emma were not married in Knox Co., and I neglected
to look for Emma's first marriage (in other words, just plain forgot).
I can look it up later.
Holt (Emery Holt Chesnut) asked me to see when his father and
mother were born and died.
Also Flora Batner. I found Delores was born Mar 10 1885 and died
Sept 4, 1957.
John (John Jacob Chesnut, I) born May 19, 1875, died Oct 31, 1953.
Tabitha (Tabitha Helen Humfleet) born Dec 1877 died Sept 27, 1946.
Hope you and Bessie are ok. We would ilke very much to see you both.
We are about as usual. Write often, we enjoy your letters.
Your cousin, Chester.
Letter from Angeline & Carson Chesnut of Baileys Switch KY to Dan

Dear list,
I am looking for information of the line of John Chesnut (possilby
Chesnutt in some documentation). He was my ggg grandfather. I
have conflicting info on his birthdate, either July 13, 1838, or Dec.
22, 1839. He married Mary Etchison Feb. 15, 1866, and Charity
Etchison on Nov. 12, 1868. I am told that he was prisoner of war in
the Andersonville (?) prison during the civil war. I would be
interested in any info anyone has and I can share the information I
have of their descendents.

I read with interest you e-mail about the family of James Chestnut (bca1813)
and Jane Wilson (bca1822) - the Chestnuts really seemed to go out of their
way to find a Jane to marry!!
>From the census (our only available census) of 31 March 1901 for 37 Castle
Street Ballymoney there is listed: JOSEPH Chestnut (bca1843) with his
daughter MARY (Chestnut) McGoldrick (bca1877) and her husband Edward
McGoldrick.
In the records of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Ballymoney, there is a
marriage, on 31 March 1900, between ELLEN Chestnut (bca1879), whose father
is JOSEPH, and William McClery, witnessed by MARY Chestnut.
Given names tend to be recycled in families and I note that also in the 1901
census for No9 Ballybrakes townland (a bit south of Ballymoney town) there
are ROBERT Chesnut (bca1835), a farmer, and his two unmarried sisters ELLEN
(bca1833) and MARY (bca1840). Because of the names I had tentatively put
Robert, Ellen and Mary as siblings of Joseph.
Adding your family information would imply that Jane Wilson started her
family when she was 13/14 years old and produced 15 children over a period
of 30 years. Unlikely. I'll re-shuffle my cards!

Hello
I am new to this area. I subcribed to it because I have a Great Grandmother
by the name of Sadie Chestonia. There is no such name I can find. So I am
looking into other spellings. Sadie is said to be from France. She was born
in Montreal in 1853 and died 1923. In Montreal she married Isidore Joseph
Dubois and thier children are Mary, Albert,William, Minnie, Isidore and
Wallace. Thier children were born I believe in Ontario all except Wallace in
Battle Creek, Michigan. I am looking for any information about Sadie I can
find. Please contact me at constan476(a)aol.com.

The was also a connection to the CARTON family of Kirk Road in Kirkhills in
this century. This may have been cleared up with the help of NORMAN PARKES
via Anne Duff.
Norman sent to Anne that: "James Ross CARTON with wife Elizabeth CHESNUT
of Kirkhills townland attended the Presbyterian church at Dervock and
produced several children.- Joseph,1851; Margaret,1853; Robert, 1858;
William, 1860."
Elizabeth would probably be a sister to John [1813-1900]
If anybody has an interest in these families or this small area of
Ballymoney I would love to hear from you.

Does anyone know how Mrs. America Chesnut and her daughter Sarah Philpot
died?
And who were America and Sarah's spouses?

A small amount of progress has been made on the family of my
great-grandparents John and Jane Chestnut who were living with their 6
children in Ballynacree-skein townland, close to Balnamore village, 2 miles
south west of Ballymoney in 1901.
John (bca 1870), Mary Jane (bca1874), William (bca1877), Joseph (bca1880),
Annie Eliza (bca1883) and Sarah (bca 1885)
The records of Drumreagh Presbyterian Church show Mary Jane Chesnutt
(bca1874) admitted to membership in 1896 also in that year John and William
followed in 1899 by my grandmother Annie Eliza. My guess is that the family
had moved to Ballynacree not long previous to 1896.
Also in the Drumreagh Church records:
21 September 1901, Marriage of Joseph (father John Chestnutt of Balnamore)
to Maggie Laverty (age 20) of Castle Street, Ballymoney. Witnesses: Daniel
McNabb & Mary Jane Chestnutt.
Baptism of Jane Chestnut (father Joseph, mother Maggie) born 5 May 1902
Baptism of Minnie Chestnutt (parents as above) born 26 Sept 1903
Baptism of Anna Eliza Chestnutt (parents as above) born 13 April 1905
27 April 1907, Marriage of Mary Jane Chestnut (father John Chestnut of
Balnamore) to Samuel McQueston (father Hugh of Ballyboyland). Witnesses:
William Chestnut & Annie Eliza Chestnut.
[They later emigrated to US along with Sarah (married name Walker) and
William who did not marry. Annie Eliza married my grandfather William Mann
in 1908]
My next task will be to inspect the index of the births' register. Births
had to be registered starting in 1854 and the yearly index contains the
childs full name and the place of registration. It should then be possible
to visit the Resistrar's Office in Belfast and see the full details.
Especially the place of birth.
Does anyone know why JANE was such a popular name in the 1800s in North
Antrim?
Kind regards to all - Norman Parkes
Don,
The information in your database about the family of Charlotte Somers HIATT
(1798-1870) who married Abraham CHESNUT (b. 1800) is in conflict with the
records of the HYATT/HIATT family association. Their information can be
found on Bill Hyatt's web page at
http://www.knowitnow.com/hyatt/ged/index.html.

In my first reading through the records of the Presbyterian Churches at
Mosside (Billy Parish)
and Dervock (Derrykeighan Parish), County Antrim I have found the following
which may be of interest to Anne (portrush(a)bigpond.com) and Erik
(EConard1(a)aol.com).
Dervock Presbyterian Church, 10 August 1829. Elder, JOHN Chesnut, chosen by
the congregation.
Mosside Presbyterian Church 16 August 1842. Baptism of both SAMUEL and
MARGARET JANE Chesnut. Children of JOHN Chesnut of Knockmore townland.
Dervock Presbyterian Church 8 Dec 1871. Marriage at Carncullagh townland of
SAMUEL Chesnut (farmer of Liscolman) whose father is JOHN with JANE GRAHAM
(father Andrew Graham of Carnmoon townland). Ceremony conducted by James
Boyle.
Witnesses: John Laverty & Mary (?) McCoy.
Mosside Presbyterian Church 2 July 1872. Marriage of Robert KENNEDY and
MARGARET JANE Chestnut (father JOHN of Liscolman).
Witness: NANCY Chestnut.
Erik: There is a possible Dinsmore connection also. Mosside Church 5 Feb
1856, marriage of Hugh Murphy and FANNY Chestnut (a widow whose father's
name was James Dinsmore). Did I tell you that I had a science teacher called
Mrs Dinsmore at Bushmills?
Kind regards
Norman
I am looking for information on Alexander Chestnut in the 1690 timespan.
I need to know who his children were and who he married. Also, I would
like to know if he came from Ireland.
