I have heard that conjecture but I haven't seen any actual record that
supports it. I have lots of information about the Scottish, Irish, and
British Chesnuts (all spellings) on my webpage. Have you seen it, there are
two zipped documents?
I have a Robinson ancestor whose name was variously spelled Robinson,
Robertson and McRobertson, so I can see that this might have happened to
McChesney and Chesney and perhaps Chesnut. I have seen at least one
reference to McChesnut, if I remember correctly.

Does anyone have a connection from Chesnutt to Mc Chessney? I'm told
our Chesnutt's were Scotch/Irish and shortened the name. Any one else
on this branch of the tree?

I am posting this for anyone on the list who may have a McDill
ancestor. There were several marriages between Chesnuts, McDills, and
allied families. Terry Peden (no Chesnut connection, but a descendant
of John Peden and Margaret "Peggy" McDill - b. 1715 in Co. Antrim, d.
1788 in SC) has posted some photos he took of a "McDill Cemetery" in
Chester Co., SC at this site:
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/1088/pphoto1.html
I don't know where exactly this cemetery is located (but would like to
know). Quite a few tombstones here, apparently, as shown in a
wide-angle shot; but only some of them (just his ancestors'?) have also
been shot close-up, showing names and dates.

E. LONDON
BORN-To the wife of Mr. Jas. Chesnut, on the 3rd, a fine girl. The happy
father is wearing a broad smile.
DIED-Mr. L.L. Chesnut, of Fort Worth, Texas, telegraphed friends here, last
Saturday that Mrs. Dan Chesnut, an account of whose poisoning we gave in our
last issue, was dead. Her remains were buried at his Texas home. We learn
that Mrs. Chesnut had been quite ill and one of her daughters, mistaking sugar
of lead for salts, accidentally gave the poison. The Bereaved husband and
children have the sympathy of all here in the their sad bereavement.
What follows is the entire Botki Family History as written by
Gerald Botkin in a letter to my dad, Robert Wayne Helton.
I have not made any corrections so you might notice some
names or dates either incorrect or missing...

P.S. to Glenn P. remember that inquiry I sent about the
hand drawn map....ahhhhh, after reading the cemetery part
it will "click".
Botkin Family History by Gerald Botkin
Written October 1967
Joseph E. Botkin was born on September 8, 1816 in Knox County, KY.
He was the son of John and Esthma Haile Botkin. Joseph married
Martha Sasser, who was born on January 30.1823 in Laurel County, KY.
Martha's father was Henry Sasser, who was born in 1787 in NC. In the
census of 1850, he states his occupation as a wagon maker Henry and
his wife, her maiden name believed to be Haley from Scotland, were
the parents of fourteen children. The Sassers were of the Kings
Council in England and they came to America because of religious
persecution by the Huguenots.
Joseph and Martha were the parents of fourteen children, they were:

Civil War.

born in 1845. Their children were Rebecca Susan, James Adin,

Their children, two, unknown, both died in infancy, probably
from an epidemic.

Flora, Lucy, Samuel, Willis, Willie May, Grover, James Werner
and Carlisle.

Arthur, Ada Pearl, Effie Mae, Gertrude Rebecca, Florence Opal and
Floyd Gilbert.
Joseph was an owner of a large plantation, having many slaves, before
the Civil War broke out. When the war started Joseph, being a resident
of a border state and a large land owner, gave his loyalties to the
South. He put up much of his estate in return for Confederate Currency,
this enabling the South to acquire much needed raw materials and food.
When the was broke out his son was in Ohio attending school. Although
his father was a strong Confederate, Elhanan enlisted in the Union Army.
He was made Captain and ironically, typical of this was, he met his
mother's brother, Captain Sasser of the Confederate troops at Lookout
Mountain, Tennessee."
When the Union Army prevailed and they stated that Confederate
Currency was no longer valid, Joseph's entire fortune was lost.
Geographically speaking, we find that Joseph lived somewhere around
Barbourville in Knox County in 1840 to 1850. Sometime around 1850,
he moved to Laurel County near London. Again we find him moving around
1860 to High Knob, which is in Clay County, but his house sat only ten
to twenty yards from the Jackson County Line, which causes some trouble
in locating them. They were officially listed in the Clay County Census
although the children were told that they were born in Jackson County.
Joseph died on June 26, 1895 and he is buried in the old Stringtown
Graveyard on top of the hill about a mile from High Knob. The few
houses standing now are in what is called Robinsontown. His wife,
Martha Sasser Botkin, died December 21, 1896, and she is buried along
side her husband at Stringtown, Kentucky.
John Botkin, Joseph's father, was born in approximately 1781 in
Pendleton County, Virginia. It is not known who his parents were,
but is is thought that he had a brother, Hugh. John married Esthma
Haile on April 4, 1805 in Knox County, Kentucky. She was born approx
1789 in Virginia. Apparently they moved to Kentucky before having any
children, as all children found in the census stated that they were
born in Kentucky.
John and Esthma Botkin were the parents of at least nine children.
They are listed below, however, the list is far from being complete:
1. Hugh Botkin, date unknown, married unknown. Their children were
Calvin who had a daughter who married William Moss.
2. William S. Botkin, born 1810, married Sarah ?, born in 1812.
Their children were Mary A, 1834; Nicy M., 1836; Susan 1841;
Elizabeth 1843 and Apilton, 1847.
3. James H. Botkin, born 1810, marired Smithie Sasser, born 1814.
They were married June 18, 1838 in Knox County, Kentucky.
Their children were Esthma, 1838; Peter L, 1840; Manison, 1843;
John B., 1845; Ezekiel, 1846; Mary E., 1847; ad Dickson, August 1850.
4. Ahart Botkin, born 1812, married Amelia Cain, born 1815.
Their children were Sarah A., 1834; John L., 1835; Sabasten H., 1838;
Green A., 1839; George M., 1842; Mary E., 1843; Winney, 1845;
William H., 1846; Elizabeth Jane, 1848 who later married a Houston.
5. Joseph E. Botkin, born 9-8-181, married Martha Sasser,
born 1-30-1823. (See above).
6. Lewis Garrard Botkin, born 1819, married Rebecca ?.
7. Browder Botkin, born unknown and married unknown.
8. John F. Botkin, born 1823, married Delia ?, born 1825.
Their children was Louisa J., born January 1850.
9. Mary A. Botkin, born 1829, married John McCloud, born 1820.
Their child was Esmy who later married a Baxter, lived in Midway Ky
This information was gleaned from a check of the 1850 census of
Knox County, Kentucky. All children were living side by side except
Ahart, Joseph and Lewis.
Joseph and Lewis were not found in Knox County. However, we find both
living in Laurel County, Kentucky in 1860. This concludes all
information learned about John Botkin to-date.
