Excerpts from the Mountain Echo [London, Laurel Co., KY] June 28,1889
DIED SUDDENLY-Mr. John B. Chesnut received a telegram last sunday morning
informing him of the death of Mr. Hiram Chesnut, of Somerset which occurred
about 4 o'clock p.m. Saturday of heart disease. He had been complaining for
nearly a week, but when death came it was very sudden indeed. All our
readers in and about London will recollect his visit here about two or
three months ago on the occasion of his brother Edmund's death, at which
time he appeared to be enjoying the very best of health, and had no
indication whatever of being so near the end of his earthly journey as he
was.

Hello,
I am doing research for a friend of a friend. She is descended from Robert
Wesley Chesnutt who was born 1855 in Duplin county, NC. His father was
James Chesnutt who was born 1812 in Sampson county, NC.
The book "Voices from the Past, Chesnutt, A Southern Colonial Family" by
Joseph H. Chesnutt says James was the son of David Chesnutt born 1769 of
Sampson county, NC, and his second wife Mary Murphy.
The database "Our Ancestors" published on the web by Don Chesnut does not
list James as the son of David. There are other discrepancies between the
two in relation to this family.
Does anyone know James and Robert? They are not in the database.

Can anyone help me please ?
I was christened Steven Marshall Chesnutt; my fathers name is/was ? James
Marshall Chesnutt. He was born in 1921 in Texarkana (is that in Texas or
Arkansas).
Any information on my fathers ancestors would be gratefully appreciated.
Regards,
Steven.
Hi,
I have looked through the 19000 Ches(t)nut individuals listed to no avail. It
was very exciting thinking I might make a connection and hopeful that in the
future I still might.
My lineage is as follows:
John Chesnut (1801 OH - 1852 IN) married in 1829 to Nancy Devore (1806
KY-??).
They had 10 children as follows:
1. Chesnut, Ann b. abt 1830/1832 married Thomas R. Hanum.
2. Chesnut, Fanny b. 1833 IN married John Lytle in 1859 in IL.
3. Chesnut, Mary Ellen b. 1834 IN d. 1852 IN.
4. Chesnut, Daniel b. 1836 IN married in 1864 to May E. Farnsworth.
5. Chesnut, Addila b. abt 1838 IN married Samuel Nunamaker.
6. Chesnut, William b. 1840 IN m in 1862 to Elizabeth Osborn (1844 IA - 1933
KS)
7. Chesnut, Hannah b. 1841 IN d 1867 (believe during childbirth in Warren
Co., IA) married in 1863 to William Osborn (1843 IA - 1919 OR). This is my
direct line.
8. Chesnut, Malinda @ 1845 IN.
9. Chesnut, John W. 1847 IN married in 1864 IL to Matilda Juvinall (1848 IL -
??).
10.Chesnut, Amanda C. @ 1849 IN d. 1890 married in 1865 to John C. Osborn.
In 1851 they were members of the Armstrong Chapel United Methodist Church, in
Warren County, Indiana.
If any of this data sounds familiar I would be delighted to hear from you.
Thanks,
Shirley
Don,
Several relatives on our end want to know if Mary Boykin Chesnut, wife of
James Chesnut, Jr., US Senator under President Lincoln and later Confederate
General is from our line of Chesnuts.
Please let me know.
Rev. Ronnie M. Chestnut
Weatherford, TX.
Don,
Enjoy your page. I have looked through the 19000 individuals listed
and have not made a connection. I'm sure I will in the future. This
line is my husband's grandmother's line. She was Opal Lora Ches(t)nut
born December 1900. She is living with her grandfather on the 1910
Stephens Co., OK Census. He is John R. Chesnut.
I did find her birthplace as Spanish Fort, Montague Co., TX. In the
1900 census I find John R. Chestnut in Spanish Fort City, Montague Co.,
TX. He is listed as born in Jan 1844 in North Carolina. His wife Sarah
E. "Lizzie" is listed as born Jan 1847 in Indiana. John's parents in
both census were listed as born in North Carolina. Her parents both
listed as born in Kentucky. It indicates that they had 11 children, 8
which are living in 1900. The only names I have for children are Nora,
Albert, Mable, Myrtle, Daisy, and possibly Robert. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks again.

>south of Graham to view the remains of what was once a handsome stone house.
> Near the bottom of a three-sided chimney, charred wood, a few piles of
>hand-hewn rock,, and a squeaking windmill were the only evidence of the
>nearly forgotten house.
> Mrs. Gilmore, who now owns the land on which the house once stood,
>recalled the day the house burned. "We saw smoke billowing up into the sky,
>and feared teh owners were inside," she said. Her husband, as well as other
>men in the community, left their threshing and combining to go put out the
>fire. This was July 3, 1950. During the years, the chimneys have crumbled
>to the ground, the fruit trees have died, and many of the large stones have
>disappeared, according to the present owner.
> Few folks recall the owner of the destroyed mansion. It is understood
>that John McDonald, an architect, came from England in the late 1800s and
>purchased 1,600 acres of land, including this plateau on which he built his
>house. He used the same skills to build the much-discussed house that he
>acquired in building the State Capitol in Austin, for which he was architect.
> Using 10-inch thick sandstone hewn from the side of the mountain,
>McDonald desighed and constructed a very modern house for that day.
> The two-story house faced east. It had such a large reception hall that
>the hall was also used for a living room; a kitchen with gray marble toped
>cabinets; a bathroom with two sizes of red and green tile; five bedrooms,
>indoor water coming from two cisterns on top of the house for piped-in water
>"near " the kitchen.
> Each room had a fireplace with tile hearths. There were extra large
>windows with smaller windows on each side. Surrounding the house was a
>sandstone wall "to keep the kids from falling off the cliff." Stone steps
>led down the west side to a greenhouse below.
> There was also a stone and wood cow lot, with stalls dug into the side
>of the mountain.
> No one seems to know what became of the McDonald family. Mrs. Ruth
>Atwood, whose late father, John Gilmore, rented the place for a while, said
>she thought one of their children was buried in Finis Cemetery. Mrs. Atwood
>said, "It was a beautiful and wonderful place." She was just a child when
>her family lived there for about a year.
> In 1907, Fred Chestnut bought the house and part of the land. Chestnut
>had a large family of seven children; the house was just what he needed.
> Mrs. Fred Moren, 85, one of the Chestnut children, stated that on July 3,
>1907, the family moved in. Exactly 43 years later to the day, the historic
>house burned.
> Mrs. Moren said that here mother had died and her father rented the
>house furnished to Mr. and Mrs. Fain Tripp; a young married couple. The
>Tripps were gone that summer afternoon when John Logan, a resident in nearby
>Finis, Tex., saw smoke pouring out of the house. The alrm spread, and all
>available men climbed the mountain to rescue Mrs. Tripp. "There was little
>they could do." said Mrs. Moren. When the fire died out they discovered no
>one was at home, and all the possessions of the Tripps, and the Chestnut
>furniture, were gone.
> Later they discovered the fire was caused by a gasoline iron left on an

> Today, Mrs. Moren still resides not far from the old home. She likes to
>recall when the house was the social center of the community, when dances
>were held in the wide hall, and when they walked down the stone steps to
>school and Finis general store.
> The Gilmores pruchased the land from the Chestnut heirs a few years ago.
> Some of the stones are preserved in a fireplace that her daughter, Mrs.
>Patsy Ranft, incorporated into her home in the community.

EXCERPTS from the MOUNTAIN ECHO (London, Laurel Co., KY)
November 7, 1988
Uncle Blev Chesnut, father of J. B. Chesnut of this place, died about 12
o'clock last Monday night and was buried at the family burying grounds,
near the old homestead last Tuesday evening. Mr. Chesnut was about 65 years
old and had been very Feeble for some time.
