Don,
I noted in my book that Leander and Lucinda (Lincks) Chesnut, of Laurel
County, Kentucky, had a son born in about 1861 named Benjamin. Lucinda was
the "Cindy" mentioned in the 1886 article as Benjamin's mother. Benjamin
would have been about 25 years old (old enough to be carrying a pistol).
Benjamin, the son, may have changed the spelling of his last name to
"Chestnut" and was known as "Beng," (Benj?). He was referred to as "Beng
Chestnut" in his mother's will, dated May 13, 1895.
Page 105 of my book, person no. 224, shows Benjamin and comments that he was
physically disabled due to having "had a leg shot off" in an accident. He
wore a wooden peg leg. He named his daughter "Sinda," (I'm not sure of the
correct spelling).
Sincerely,
John Chesnut
Anybody know which Ben this was?

I have more information on the children. I have been told that both
Sarah Cynthia and Mary Martha were cherokee indians. I have been told
that Sarah Cynthia walked the "Trail of Tears". Do you have any
information on this. I have not been able to substanciate this. I am
so glad that I finally made a connection. I was beginning to think my
ancestors didn't really exist. Any information you have I would be
extremely interested in seeing. I'll be waiting your reply. Sorry I
haven't gotten back to you sooner. My server has been messing up. :)

I sent a query about Chesnuts to the Palo Pinto, Texas genealogy home page
and I received the message below. I have not changed it at all -- I am
sending it on exactly the way I received it. I believe I have identified 16
of those listed with names on Don Chesnut's web page. They are as follows
(listing only those included on the cemetary record below, except for the
first person):
1. James Monroe Chesnut (not included in the following list)
2. James Monroe Chesnut, Jr and his wife Permelia
3. John Abe Chesnut
2. Bennett P. Chesnut (listed as B.T. Chesnut below?)
3. James C Chesnut and his wife Nancy
4. Emisly Chesnut
4. Hubert Chesnut
3. John A. Chesnut
3. Grover Chesnut
4. Floyd Chesnut
2. Thomas Franklin Chesnut and his wife Mahaly Jane
3. Cause A. (Causby?) Chesnut
3. Gard A. Chesnut
3. Lee W. Chesnut
If these are correct, then the list below includes a little information that
is not included on Don's web page and some of the information differs from
that on Don's page. If anyone can see that I have not identified any on the
list correctly, or if you can identify any of the others on the list, I
would be glad to hear from you. Someday I hope to visit Palo Pinto and
visit the cemetaries myself. Bennett Chesnut is my great-great grandfather.

Hi everyone,
I am looking for information on two lines of my "Chesnutt Tree". I've asked
for and gotten help from you before and now I would like to extend one of
those lines if possible.
All of my ancestors in the Chesnutt family come thru my g grandfather
William Columbus PAGE's line, on my father's side. My gg grandmother was
Sarah Ann RACKLEY, who's parents were Peyton RACKLEY b 7 July, 1800, d 14
May, 1897, and Wealthy CHESNUTT b ? d between 1841 and1844. Peyton had a

Sorry about the abupt cut off of that last mail (the network
around here went down).
but...
My Fathers name is :
Walter Grandvill Chesnut
I have just read the "Origin of a Chesnut family" on your web page and
notice that the last paragragh is the closest to the description of the
understanding of my great grand fathers origon.
Befor getting the land in Oklahoma, he used to sell meat to the starving
indians of this area. This is presumably how he learn about the parcel he
eventually got (the only lake for miles around). But befor doing even
this, I presume his family may have been ruined or left without a father
by the Civil war.
I have been told that in a place called Medecine Lodge Kansas, there is
an old log cabin still standing near the center of town which used to
be the "town hall". On its walls is carved the names of all the member
of the city councel that presided. One of those names is my Great Great
Grandfather - again, I think, a William Chesnut.
If you want me to dig deeper I could talk to my aunts and uncles for more
information. I have even seen scrape books containing obituaries and photos
of the Chesnuts of Oklahoma (on their horses looking very grim - no air
condisioning in those days) in the 1800's.
Regards
Scott
I really didn't want this to go to the whole group but my
server doesn't recognize the "e-mail" hot button on the
web page at:

Anyhow, my name is:
William Scott Chesnut.
I was named after my uncle who was named after my great granfather
who was one of the "Sooner" like fellows who did the land grab
for Cherokee strip back the 1880's. We had the farm outside of
Enick (sp) Oklahoma until about ten years ago when my Aunt Bell
died and no one was left to run it.
I suspect my family has been in the states a long time and it is
rumored that they were run out of Scotland around the time of the
battle of Cloden (1745) along with most of Prince Charles band.
I have no proof of this but maybe with a little help from you out
there I will learn more.
My brothers all have names that have been passed down over generations
and may infact be similar to some of yours (if we are related to the
same ancestor).
My older brother is named:
Walter Roy Chesnut
My younger brother is named:
Dean Stilwell Chesnut
We are related to the Dean family of Oklahoma this I am sure of
