I do not show his place of death, either. According to my father's notes,
he came with John Jr. to Tennessee, but he may well have moved back to South
Carolina at a later date. His wife appears to have been a strong-willed
person who supported her son's decision to move to Tennessee. The younger
John Chesney apparently deeded a large tract of land in Spartanburg County
to Alexander Alexander prior to moving to Tennessee, which may be
indicative of his desire not to return to South Carolina. This of course
proves nothing concerning John Chesney, Sr.
I wish I could help more.

The John Chesney I am researching was born between 1750-1760, and can be
documented in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Grainger/Union Co.,
Tennessee., thus doesn't fit for the John Chesney, son of Robert
McChesney born 1769, that settled in Pulaski and Wayne Co., KY, and
married Elizabeth Jasper. Obviously this these aare different John
Chesneys.
John , son of Robert McChesney b. 17 Mar 1769 , is the John Chesney
settled in Pulaski/Wayne County, Ky, and never connected to Tennessee in
any way, such as I have been able to find. Is there a record, or
reference, that anyone knows of that ties the John Chesney in
Tennessee to the Robert and Alexander Chesney, father and brother of the
Kentucky John Chesney? Although I have gotten some replies from several
persons that BELIEVE John from Grainger/Union is descended from the
Robert Chesney line, no one of these persons has been able to supply one
record, PROOF, or viable reference that ties these folks together. My
question then is , as there is no proof how does anyone know this to be
fact?? If this is a case of someone at sometime in the past speculating
that because John Chesney Jr. of Grainger and Union Co., Tn, (having
clearly been born S.C.) , had to be descended from the well known Robert
Chesney family of Union Co., S.C., then . I suspect the person that
formulated the theory didn't know there was an even older, well
established family of Chesneys in Spartanburg.
The Kentucky John Chesney is listed in the 1810 tax list for Pulaski Co.,
In 1820 Pulaski Co. Census, "1820 U.S. Census Kentucky Pulaski, John
Chestney" (living next door to John Jasper), and in the 1830 census for
Wayne Co., Ky., and is known to have died in September 1839,( the date
you cite), in Wayne or Madison Co., KY. Has anyone any indication, or
reason to think that he left Kentucky at anytime between any of those
dates, moved to Tennessee, then back to Kentucky? It seems very doubful
to me, and I believe the John Chesney Sr from Grainger Co., Tn. (the
patriarch of the Union County, Tn. Chesneys, is easy to distinguish as
having been a different John Chesney from the John Chesney, son of Robert
Chesney.
The Pulaski Co., Ky., John Chesney, son of Robert and brother of
Alexander;
Birth: 3-17-1769 in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland
Death: 9- -1839 in Cumberland River Farm, Madison Co., KY.
Married Elizabeth Jasper
The John (Sr.) Chesney in Grainger (the particular part that was
later added to form Union) County, Tn in 1830 was born between 1750-1760,
thus does not figure to have been the John, brother of Alexander, and son
of Robert McChesney, who has been stated born in 1769, as the age is off
by almost 10 years. He does fit, however, for the son of Richard Chesney
crst in 1760. If the birth date for the son of Robert Chesney is
even close to within several years it still will not work for the age of
John of 1830 Grainger Co., Tn., and that fact alone should be significant
to Chesney researchers.
That this John, born 1750-1760, was the father of John Jr. that
was the father of Sterling, and the partriarch of the Union County, Tn.
branch of the Chesneys is certainly assured by the census records, which
show the same neighbors for a succession of years, both in the listing
when the area was in Grainger County, and then also after it became that
portion of Union County.

I notice on almost every gedcom on ancestry.com that the John Chesney
that is supposed to have been the son of Robert and Elizabeth Purdy
Chesney is the John Chesney from Pulaski, Kentucky, and not the John that
was the patriarch of the Union Co., Tn. Chesneys. Obviously, both Johns
were not the son of Robert Chesney.
In researching the family of Richard Chesney who was granted land on
the Enoree River in Berkely/96th District/Spartanburg, in 1763, and who
was the patriarch of the Spartanburg Chesneys, as of yet I have not found
even one record in Spartanburg Co., that pertains to the Robert Chesney
line, and this after looking at every available source for Chesneys in
that place I am able to get my hands on!!!
Has anyone any information that connects any of the Robert Chesney
family with Spartanburg County at any time? I have been extensively
looking into records in Spartanburg, I am able to find NO records from
Spartanburg County, South Carolina that pertain to any Chesneys other
than the family of Richard Chesney. Does anyone know of any such
records??
