Is there anyone who is recognized as the authority on New Hampshire Chesleys or is there a recognized resource that would have Chesley genealogy? Perhaps one of the Strafford County histories? I am seeking the ancestry of my gr-gr-grandfather George W. Chesley. Perhaps someone could give me some advice. In numerous sources George says he was born in Effingham, NH on February 22, 1842. This comes from his death certificate as well as his Civil War pension papers. I have not been able to find him in the 1850 census. My great aunt believed that his parents were William J. Chesley and Hannah Bryant. I have no idea of where she came up with that data. I know that the Effingham records were destroyed by fire. I found William J. Chesley in the 1840 census with wife Hannah living in Durham, NH. In 1850 William is still found living in Durham but there is no 8 yr old George living with him. If anyone could direct me to possible sources I would appreciate it.

My greatgrandmother, Katherine Waring Secor b. 1867, NY,married John DeFolly (or de Tolley) Chesley.
According to an IGI record, their marriage was in 1893. Does
anyone have any information on him? I did find an Ann de Tolley b. 1826, MD. who married a John Francis Chesley, b. 1821 but I don't know if there is any relationship.
Thanks in advance.

On the 1850 census for Vermilion County Illinois which is just north of Edgar County there is a Elizabeth Chesley listed with a Edward Chesley and apparently a married older sister Mary Reynolds age 20 and born in Virginia, wife of William J. Reynolds age 29 born in Massachusetts. While Elizabeth was born in Virginia in 1833 (though the 1900 census shows 1836) her "brother" was apparently born in Ohio in 1834. A Elizabeth Dorothy Chesley married a William A. Murphy (ILLINOIS STATEWIDE MARRIAGE INDEX). I have ordered her obituary from Madison County Illinois where she died in 1921. The 1920 census indicates that her parents were born in Virginia.
