Hi,
Sorry - have one more thing. Was looking through the album again. There is a small photograph with "G.W. Chesley - Owatonna" printed along the edge. The photograph is of a little girl sitting with her arms crossed.
Could this photographer be your George?

Last weekend I purchased at a local antique store an album of old photographs and advertising. In it was a small item that was probably once a notepad. The front cover has
"Chesley" in script and then underneath it says Artistic Phographs, No. 123 Cedar St. There is a fancy break and then beneath that is:
Negatives Preserved
Owatonna, Minn.
Were your Chesley's photographers? I believe that Owatonna is in Steele Co., Minn. Did yours ever live there?
Would you like to have the little item? It's about 2 inches wide and 4 inches long.

You're right it is all very interesting. We are trying to find out more about where Pieter and his anscestors came from. The story we have is that he was sent from Old France to Canada to fight in the Indian wars.
Pieter and Lydia were my 5th greatgrandparents. Their son John, b.1762, Kinderhook NY married Magdalena Landt, their son Jacob is my 3rd ggrandfather, his son Charles Henry is my ggrandfather and his son Charles E. is my greatgrandfather. Henry Eugene eldest son of Charles E. and Maria Jane Copeland Chesley married Winnie Ethel Teele, their son Don Chesley, b. July 8 1915 was my father.

This is an amazing tradition which probably has some truth in it, and I would love to know where it came from! It may contain clues that will lead to further research. However, Allsaint(s) Chesley of Cornwall, Ontario was baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of Kinderhook, New York on August 18, 1771 along with a girl child named Nancy Chesley, possibly his twin. His parents were listed as "Pieter Kessley" and "Lydia Nughen" and the child's name in Dutch was "Alsynt" which means All Saints.
The parents were married in the same church on 7 May 1758, as "Pieter Jesley" born in Old France, and "Lydia Nusen" who was the widow of John Wallis. They had several other children who were all (except one) baptized in the same church, with the parents' surnames spelled in various imaginative ways. One of their children was my great-great-great grandfather, Simon Chesley. Allsaint(s) Chesley named one of his sons after Simon.
I speak French, and the first name of Allsaint(s) in French is Toussaint, not "Deux Saints." It is a name often given in France to boys who were born on November 1. Although the baptism of Allsaint(s) Chesley of Cornwall, Ont. took place on Aug. 18, 1771, he could well have been born on Nov. 1, 1770. Histories of the Cornwall area mention Allsaint(s)' arrival in Canada about 1799-1800 from his previous residence in Schodack, Rensselaer County, NY which is just north of Kinderhook.
The reference to Springfield, Mass. may have something to do with Lydia's origins which are so far unknown. The part about "professor of languages" is very interesting because Allsaint(s) Chesley did have a son or grandson who taught languages, and another son, Solomon, is known to have been fluent in French and in Mohawk. The whole family was very literate for the times they lived in.

I have ancestors with the given name of Chesley--Chesley Potter and Chesley Ford. Does anybody know if these men would be related to surname Chesleys?
