I can confirm what Amy says. It is much easier to order online, from

use a local registry office, unless you get someone like Anthony to do it

Is this the proper site to request a lookup in the 1851 census?
Would like lookup for Japheth HUGHES. In the U.S.A. sometimes it was
Hughes and other times it was just HUGHS. His given name has been
spelled many different ways as well! He was born about 1826 in Wales, so
would be about 25 years old, and single. Interested in finding out where
he was born and who he was living with in 1851.
Japheth HUGHES married Maria WILLIAMS in 1852 at Chester in Cheshire
County. Their son Henry was born in Chester in 1853. In 1854 the family
sailed for the United States. Maria WILLIAMS was born about 1829, also

I am interested in obtaining a birth certificate from Stockport. It seems
that the record might be at the Register office in Stockport. The directions
are to send a cheque to that office.
My question: I live in the US and to exchange money from U.S. dollars to
British pounds at a bank is very expensive. Does anyone know if the register
office in Stockport would accept a U.S. cheque if I sent it according to the
correct exchange rate?
Or is there some way they would accept a credit card?
The birth record is one from the June quarter of 1853.
Thank you for any guidance.

My understanding is that they will not accept a credit card nor
could they accept a cheque drawn on an account that is in dollars.
It is *possible* to have an account in the US in sterling but it's
not practical for most. There's also international money orders
sold at the post office, but again, it's not inexpensive.
Best advise is either to use someone local to obtain the
cert for you -- Antony (and now I am blanking on your surname!)
is quite reliable and prompt; Stockport RO are also very prompt.
I did phone over there to the RO to make sure of the above.
I'm unaware of any change in their policies.

I am desperately trying to find my great grandmother, Margaret Wilson (b.
1841, Ruabon, Denbighshire) and her sister Jane Carson Wilson (b. 1838, Ruabon,
Denbighshire) in 1861. I have them both in 1851 as scholars, and Margaret
reappears in 1881 in service in Altrincham. They had relatives in the
Manchester/Cheshire area, so I'm assuming that they were both 'in service' in the area in
1861. Margaret always understated her age on Censuses.
Any help appreciated, although I realise that this is needles and haystack
Thanks and Happy New Year from Scotland.
Seems a long time since I listed my names.
However, as I don't get much time to do my own research I'll concentrate on
the important one:
DUNCALF(E), DUNCOFF, DUNCUFF, DUNCUFT, DUNCLIFF(E) but not Dunnicliff(e).
The Duncliff(e)s in the Stockport area are definitely descended from
Duncalfs from the Manchester area, as are the Duncufts in Dukinfield.
Interested in any of the above, anywhere at any time. Have extensive family
trees and thousands of items of original data collected over 22 years.

I'm quite keen to get hold of a Census Index of Warrington but note it is
not one of the products listed on the Cheshire FHS website. Presumably this
is because it is not strictly Cheshire although it features in the Cheshire
Does anyone know whether there are any Census indexes for Warrington (other
than 1881) and if so how I can get hold of them?
I hope to finalise my Russett search pre 1881 census in which the name was transcribed as Russell.

The marriage index for Stockport which was referred to is part of the
Bertram Merrell Marriage Index for Cheshire, so it covers a much wider
area than just Stockport. Incidentally, this is in the process of being
combined with Pauline Litton's North East Cheshire Marriage index, which
will extend the coverage even further - more on that next year :-)
The only published indexes of Stockport baptisms and burials that I know
of were produced by North Cheshire FHS a few years ago, and they can

Happy New Year to you all from sunny Lincolnshire. I am new to this list, and have a question I hope someone can answer. I am tracing my Jewish ancestors at present, and have been told I have a connection to New Brighton on the Wirral. Is there a name index for the 1871 census that covers New Brighton, I don't have an address, but the surname I am looking for is JACOBS. Any help would be much appreciated.
