Did any of your Cheshires move to Missouri or Kansas? I have some old
letters that my Great Great Grandmother wrote that tell about the Cheshires
who lived near Sherman, Kansas. I always wondered if they had lived in
Missouri first because they would go there to visit.
This is what I have learned from the old letters and also by looking for
info. at the Prairie Museum in Colby, Kansas.
Jennie B. Cheshire, daughter of John Cheshire. lived near Sherman, Kans. She
had a brother named John. Jennie married married Purly Burt Petty on 13
June, 1894 At Sherman, Kansas. They had a son, Jimmie. In the letters I
learned that Jennie was a teacher and that family members kept taking her
money. She wasn't a very stable person. She and Purly got a divorce and
they fought over their son, Jimmie. Purly had him for a while . Purly took
the boy to Anita, Cass Co., Iowa, and it sounded like he was trying to get a
divorce there and to keep Jimmie and all his assets. Then he talked of
coming back to Kansas because the trial was on Dec. 30, 1896 at Colby and
Joe Gill was his lawyer there. The next letter, May 1897, talks about
Jennie having gone back to her parents and she had Jimmie. She was bed
ridden and Jimmie was not being cared for properly. Then no mention of
Jimmie was ever made and Purly Petty married someone else (in fact, three
more times that I have learned about so far). I am assuming Jimmie went
with Jennie and maybe she married again and gave Jimmie the next husband's
last name. Purly was the brother of my Great Grandmother.
I would like to track down what happened to Jimmie. A relative told me he
always heard that Jimmie went to live with a Hart family at Salina, Kans. I
wonder if that means Jennie married someone with the last name of Hart or if
Jimmie was given up for adoption or just farmed out with someone.
thanks for your time, Dawn Wheat
This gets sort of complicated as I have records with contradicting
information and I don't know if I should believe the old letters or what the
library has to say. Does anyone know of this family of John Cheshires at
Sherman, Kans.?
This all gets sort of complicated because the old letters are so hard to
read. The letters are written between Purly's mother at Brewster, Kans. and
his sister who lived in Anita, Iowa. When they got together, the letters
stopped so there are some things that I never did learn about the family.

document it. Any help along these lines would be appreciated.
