Dear Cherry Family Member,
I'm an American (Hoosier, too) living and working in Berlin, Germany. Over Easter my family and I vacationed in Belgium and visited the Flanders Field American Cemetery in Waregem, Belgium. Walking amongst the crosses in the small cemetery, I was looking at names, states and dates. From my observation there were only three soldiers from Indiana and one being Edward H Cherry.
Surfing around the internet out of curiosity looking for anything on the three Hoosiers, I stumbled on your entry below and thought I would drop a note.
His cross states:
Edward H Cherry
Pvt 1CL 362 Inf 91 Div
October 31, 1918
>From what little I found this evening looking up the 91st Division, he likely fought and died in Belgium not far from the cemetery. The division was originally created from the Western States of Washington, Idaho, Wyoming and California. I'd be curious to know how three Hoosiers landed in this group.
Hope you find this interesting. I dabble in WWI history. No one from my family fought in WWI, so it is interesting to follow other people and names I find along the way.
