Hi Linda,
I am looking for the ancestors of a Caroline (also Carolin) Isabel Methven, whose father was John Methven, b. c1845 in Whitechapel, England. Any connection? Caroline married Alfred W. Pearce, then emigrated to America in 1912.
Just thought I'd throw it out there.

First the Lost colony project is a non profit organisation.
>From the Administrator of the Project:
Is your family part of the Roanoke Lost Colony? It could be! My name is Roberta
Estes and I'm the Director for DNA Research for the Lost Colony Center for
Science and Research. (_www.lost-colony.com_ (http://www.lost-colony.com/) )
Our goal is to discover the fate of the Roanoke Lost Colonists. For those of you
who don't know about the mystery of the Lost Colony, here's a primer. In 1587,
Sir Walter Raleigh financed a venture in which 116 men,
women and children were planning to establish the first permanent colony in the
New World. Their goal was to raise tobacco and other supplies that colonists
were unable to obtain in England, and to search for precious minerals, like
gold.
In the fall of 1587, the colonists finally arrived on Roanoke Island in present
day North Carolina, after a very difficult journey in which their food supplies
were ruined. They sent John White, whom they had elected governor, back
to England to obtain food and supplies and expected his return in the spring of
1588. However, the Spanish attached England and England, having no Navy,
impressed all of her fishing vessels and private merchant ships into Naval
service. Finally, in 1590, three years after leaving the colonists which
included his daughter, son-in-law and infant granddaughter, he returned to
Roanoke Island to find it deserted, but not destroyed. It appeared as if the
colonists had simply moved. A single word, a clue, Croatan, was carved on a
tree. The Croatan were the friendly Indians living nearby. Before John's
departure, he had instructed the colonists to carve crosses if they had to leave
in distress. There were no crosses.
John White would spend the rest of his life searching for the Lost Colonists.
Many hints and clues indicate that at least some of the Colonists survived and
were assimilated into the native tribes. The question is, did they, and if
so, who are they today? In 1993, the original site of the Croatan village was
located. Subsequent archaeological and genealogical research suggests that the
colonists did
survive, and that when the land was granted to settlers, it was granted to some
of those survivors who were by that time considered to be Indians. With recent
advances in DNA for genealogy, we finally have, today, the ability to solve the
mystery. We have created a plan that combines history, genealogy and DNA to
solve the mystery. However, we can't do this alone. We need the help of the
families who have been identified as "families of interest", being either
roster members of the Lost Colony of those who obtained land grants on the
original Croatan village site. Many of those names are the same.
In order to educate people and work closely with people who are interested, we
are sponsoring the Lost Colony Symposium for DNA and Recent Research Sept.
7-9, 2007 at the Lost Colony Center in Williamston, NC. The symposium will be
held between the Center and the Holiday Inn, as noted on the flyer at
_http://www.lost-colony.com/DNAsymflyer.html_
(http://www.lost-colony.com/DNAsymflyer.html) .
Given that your surname is one of those on our "Names of Interest" list, I hope
that people on the list will join with us in our research. I am hoping from this
mailing, aside from encouraging people to attend the Symposium, to
achieve the following:
1. To identify a primary research person or persons for your particular surname
who would serve as a contact/ coordinator for future postings, requests and
research.
2. To identify a family archival website(s) if one exists.
3. To identify if there are any families of that surname that are from NC (or
early coastal SC or VA), have oral histories of Indian or "mixed" heritage, are
involved with any of the tri-racial isolate groups (Melungeons, Red Bones, etc.)
and/or have any oral history of the Lost Colonies.
4. To determine if the family group is involved already with DNA testing, and if
so, who coordinates that effort.
5. To determine if there is any research occurring or that has occurred for your
surname in Great Britain, and if not, if anyone is interested in pursuing that
avenue.
To become involved with the Lost Colony project, or to support the project,
please attend our Symposium. Our project plan will be announced at the
Symposium, and we have a long list of wonderfully educational speakers. Bring
your pedigree charts and your genealogy as the right people will be present to
help you with your testing plan.
If you can't attend the conference, you can still join the project. Information
will be posted shortly about how to do that on the Lost Colony website. We are
in the process of setting us a private newsgroup for project members
only which will also be available after the symposium. Furthermore a blog is
being created and blog location info will be posted on the Lost Colony website
as well.
If you are interested in this project or can be of help in any way, please
contact me at _restes(a)comcast.net_ (mailto:restes@comcast.net) .
Lost Colony website: http://lost-colony.com/home.html
The surnames are on our blog: http://www.the-lost-colony.blogspot.com/
I will be on vacation from now until July 24th. Please e-mail questions about
the Symposium or the project to either my volunteer assistant, Nelda Percival at
nelda_percival(a)hotmail.com or Anne Pool, the Center's Educational Director at
croatan(a)peoplepc.com. They will answer any immediate questions about the
Symposium and you will be put on an interest list.

I have found a Rebecca Cherry age 52 and her 22 year old invalid daughter, Cunilid, living in the household of Ann Reeves (my GGGgrandmother) age 86 in the 1860 Butler Co KY census.
In the 1870 Muhlenberg Co Ky census Haml (Hamilton) Reeves (my GGgrandfather) age 46, his wife Mary and 2 children are living in the household of Thomas Cherry age 26 b TN, his wife Rachel age 25 b TN, their 2 children. There is also a Virginia Cherry age 19 b KY.
In the 1850 DeKalb Co TN census, Hamilton Reaves age 25 is head of the household consisting of his wife Mary age 25, daughter Sara, my Ggrandmother, age 11/12, Ann Reaves age 74 and Hamet (Harret) Julin age 8.
Hamilton and Mary were living in Butler Co KY in Jan 1856 when their son, Benjamin, was born.
In KY Marriages 1851-1900 Thomas A Cherry married Rachel Rives on 3 May 1866 in Muhlenberg Co Ky.
I have no idea how the Cherrys are connected to "my" Reaves/Reeves/Rives ancestors. Do you think this could be the same Rebecca and Thomas that are your ancestors?

Do you know how the Cherrys in Northeastern counties of NC (Pitt, Martin,
Bertie) are related to the Cherrys in Old Rowan / Lincoln Co. NC.? I know
that they were in Lincoln Co. in the 1770's. I just don't know how they are
linked to the one in Pitt & etx.

Hi Judy; Been gone a few days, just ran across this posting after answering the first one. I know nothing of Native American in my husband's CHERRY line but have often wondered about it and heard it mentioned before from other researchers. There are high cheekbones and (no offense, it comes from being in the sun all the time) "thin" eyes in the family that have come from somewhere. What puzzles me most is that Joseph said, on three U.S. censuses, that he was born in England. After he died in 1874, three of his sons on the 1880 census say he was born in NC! I need to look up the married daughters on that census to see what they said; never thought of that before, duh. That census is online, free. I know Michael KILLION was born in NC, abt 1779, he was 71 on the 1850 Wisconsin census, not on the 1855 WI State Census tho. I also have a SMITH line but he was born in VA, his wife Mahala WEST, was born in KY. All of those states are close together, anything is possible I gu!
ess; both of those lines wound up in IL and WI. One of Joseph's daughters, Elizabeth, married John HIRD. There are HIRDS in NE today also and in an area in England where I do find a Thomas and Jane CHERRY, but no Joseph. Such a confusing mess but it is always fun to do the searching, more fun to FIND something! I've never found any connection to the TX CHERRYS but who knows? I need Joseph's parents or siblings to make that connection. You need to get your uncle's papers out and go back to the 1800's and see if he has anything for that time period. Most of those born around the time of WWII are still alive and won't be listed online anywhere. Ann

Hi Judy: Good to get your reply. You mention going back to WWII with your family until you get your uncle's things out. Most of the Cherry cousins I have were born before then, even back to the late 1920's! So I've got pretty much all of my Joseph Cherry's descendants. It's backwards that I can't find him. He married Amelia KILLION in Illinois in 1841 but migrated up to Mifflin, Iowa, Wisconsin in the late 1840's. After he died his widow and both adult and minor children migrated to Nebraska which is where a lot of them are today. Joseph and Amelia named their first two children Elizabeth Jane and Thomas Michael so I'm thinking one or both could have been his parents names. Michael was the maternal grandfather so I'd assume Joseph would have used his own father's name, Thomas? I know the KILLIONS were in Stokes Co., NC and later migrated to Jackson Co., Illinois. This line has been well researched and is online in many places. Joseph married in Madison Co., possibl!
y Alton which is where his first two children were born. If you run across anything in your uncle's papers, please let me know! I've been looking for anybody related to Joseph, outside of my husband's line, for 15 years!
Thanks, Ann acherrytree(a)frontiernet.net

I've just posted a note to Ann, this seems really strange,we're from NC, the Cherry's in my family were from a western Cherokee tribe & ended up in TX after the trail of tears.Of course, you know the Cherokee here in NC hid and were not moved by Uncle Sam.(that caused a lot of contention in my family since my maternal grandmother was half EASTERN Cherokee& paternal family was WESTERN tribe. I'm very interested to know if any of these (besides my Dad)found their way to NC.I'm really new at this but have found it fascinating!Would love to hear from you and your info

Nice to meet you Ann, my father's brother was a Joseph David Cherry. He was killed in the air force probably 50 years ago as a young man. We ended up in the foothills of NC after my Dad met Mom while he was here on leave from the Marine Corp during WWII. My great grand was a Cisson, a western native american who married Mr Cherry. The Cherry's have been traced back before the Alamo by a great uncle who is now deceased but has lots of info. I'll dig it out and see if any could be your family. These are a great line of people and had a really hard but spiritual life.My grandfather (the native)married my grandmother,Jewel Rhodes,a little Irish lady who was constantly told she messed up the blood line! She took it very well though(she was bigger than him!)Lots of wonderful stories to tell.I'll get back to you with other names.Loved hearing from you,I've never done this before and you've really made it fun.....Judy

John, there is a Clarence in my husband's Cherry line, the only one. Great grandfather, Joseph Cherry, b abt 1817 is my mystery man. I have never been able to find his parents or any siblings. His father-in-law, Michael Killion, was from NC and I'm wondering if my Joseph could have been there also as more than one of the ancestors, and families, all wind up in IN, IL and WI at the same time before Joseph's widow migrated to NE in the early 1880s. I have no TX connection that I'm aware of but sometimes names carry across families. Any Joseph in your line?
