Tried posting this yesterday and it didn't seem to go through....
Hello,
I'm new, and probably only temporary, to this list.
I'm working on some genealogy for my sister-in-law's family. Her
g-grandfather was John Cherry who is supposed to have been born 2-28-1824 at
"Hapfordshire," 21 miles east of London. Family lore says he was a younger son of the
family. John Cherry is also supposed to have had a sister Mary Cherry Crowe who
had 24 children and lived near London. In some records the family is said to
be Catholic, in others they are listed as Church of England.
John Cherry emigrated to the U.S. where he married Ann Lynch Boyle ca. 1857
in NY or NJ. They moved to near Springfield, IL, and in 1879 settled at
Beulah, Kansas, where he died in 1899.
Does anyone on the list have any info. on this family? Particularly does
anyone know where "Hapfordshire" might be. (The name appears to be corrupted,
and definitely not a real shire....) I did find a "Hartford End" in Essex,
approximately the right distance to the northeast of London. There are a few
"Hatfield" variants thereabouts as well. I haven't seem anything else on current
maps east of London that looks even close.
Any replies will be greatly appreciated.
