Looking for the family of George Cherry (List'd as George H. Cherry on the 1850 cesus) b: abt 1802 in SC per census record. He married a Margaret Lourany (Surname unknown) in GA before 1838. I found them on the 1850 census in Upson Co., GA and on the 1860 census in Muscogee Co., GA without George, listing Margaret as head of household. On the 1870 census, I found the family without George in Augusta, Richmond Co., GA, so I'm assuming he passed away sometime between 1853 (last child born) and 1850, probably in Muscogee Co., GA.
Any help greatly appreciage
I'm doing a little wishful thinking and I'm wishing for someone to say they
have a Cherry ancestor from the Luton, Bedfordshire, England area. My father
was born there in 1885 and came to the states sometime around the turn of
the century where he shows up in Seattle ca 1910. As far as I know he was
the only from his family to emigrate to America. His brother went to New
Zealand.
And to add to the wish, on my mother's side I have a Patrick Cherry b. abt
1750 supposedly in New Jersey but I suspect this is where he first shows up.
He married Rachel Wortman, I'm guessing, abt 1776. They moved to Illinois
where he died in 1832. Their children: Green, Isaac, Margaret, James and
William Ross.
While I'm doing fine getting my father's line, I'm stuck on Patrick's
progeny. Sorry for the skimpy info, but that's about all I have. Is there
any help out there?
Thank you,
Wes Cherry

Pete: Boy, this is both tough and easy. Tough because of the same name we each have of George Washington CHERRY; easy because my George was born in Miffin, Iowa, Wisconsin in 1863. As he was my husband's grandfather, I pretty much have all of his siblings and descendants. His parents are another matter. Joseph says he was born in England; his wife, Amelia KILLION, was born in Indiana in 1823. Amelia's father, Michael KILLION (mother Nancy DONOHUE/DONOHEW) was born in NC, don't know where. So right there I have NC, IL and IN involved, then they migrated up to WI where Joseph CHERRY died in 1874; buried in Mifflin Cemetery. My main problem is that I don't know Joseph's parents names or have any siblings for him. It was common in those days for married children to use the same names for their children which is why I questioned the GWC. Where did that come from? He was Joseph and Amelia's last child. I don't have anybody in the older line born in the southern states!
. After Joseph died in 1874, his widow Amelia migrated to Nebraska with the children. Many of their descendants are still there today. My husband was born there but his family moved to WY in 1941 where he grew up. The older TX CHERRYS that I'm aware of belong to the Aaron CHERRY line. That is they migrated there years ago. I too have the paper saying the CHERRY name was originally, French, deCHERIE, then CHERRIE, then CHERRY. As Huguenots they were run out of France a few centuries ago. Do you have any HARKER or HIRDS in your line? Thanks for the reply, Ann

Ann,
So sorry. I transposed the birth date of Curieann. It should read 1839. She was the wife of Joseph H. and the Mother of George Washington Cherry. Could we have a connection???
In reference to Joseph's birth place I took that information from the 1870 Federal census. I do beleive the census information was sometimes given incorrectly by our relatives. As a matter of fact my Grandfather listed his birth place as South Carolina on one census when in fact he was born in Mississippi.
Other info- Joseph H. Cherry
1st wife Mary Matilda Cherry ( a relative we think)
2nd wife Curieann Archer Tilley (listed as Ann on the 1870 census)
3rd wife Mary Lousia Kinard
I do have some names of 1/2 siblings of George Washington Cherry. Jerome Parker who also post on this site is a grandchild of one of these.
And yes, the spelling of Currieann could be wrong. This spelling came from my Grandfather's bible.(not real sure he knew how to spell)
There were many connections in Arkansas. In 1900 my Grandfather(George) was a boarder in the household of Robert Hamilton in Clearwater Creek, Desha, Arkansas. He met his first wife-Lillie Bell Martin in Arkansas. They had 4 children, two that I know of were born in Louisiana. They were living in Arkansas when Lillie Bell and two children died. In the 1910 census he and the two remaining children, my Aunt Ora Lee and Uncle George Martin are living in Clayton, Desha, Arkansas. This is 3 years prior to him marring my Grandmother (Gatsie Livingston) Mr father remembers his Dad (George) telling him that Lillie Bell had a son named Otis who moved to Texas.
I certainly would appreciate any information you may have or find on any of the above. Most information is based on what my Father has told me and he feels Joseph was born in either North or South Carolina.
Please do question me on any dates or references I make because I usually post late at night and do tend to make some errors on the key board!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cathy: Confused on the dates for Currieann. Was she Joseph's wife? He died in 1890 and you have her born in 1893. Also interested in your George Washington CHERRY. That was the name of my husband's grandfather! However, I know of no TN connections although his father, Joseph CHERRY, MAY have been in NC. I have my Joseph born abt 1818, but he says he was born in England on 3 U.S. censuses. I sometimes wonder if he was giving his heritage as I can't find him anywhere! Was also wondering if Currieann should be Carrieann/Carrie Ann. I know my a's are not closed on the top and sometimes look like o's. Thanks, Ann Cherry
