The final resting places of Joel Cherry and Nancy Allen Cherry have been located. They are buried in the new section of the Six Mile Creek Cemetery in Lancaster County, SC. Both the old and new Six Mlle Creek Cemeteries at one time apparently contained over 200 acres and lapped over into Union County, NC. The older part was abandoned around 1842 and is overgrown with about 20 to 25 markers evident, mostly illegible. Dates on the markers are from late 1700s to 1842. The newer cemetery is about 4 miles further up Hwy 521 next to the now abandoned Six Mile Creek Presbyterian Church. There are over 100 markers evident. The tombstone for Joel Cherry is upright, but tilted and states: "In Memory of Joel Cherry Died Jan 10th 1848 in the 79th year of his age....An Honest Man". Nancy Cherry's stone is broken in two pieces and states: "In Memory of Nancy Cherry died June 24th 1859 75 years 11 mo 20 days....
There is a world above
Where parting is unknown
A long eternity of love
Form'd for the good alone
And faith behold the dying here
Translated that glorious sphere"
Many thanks to Mrs. Gayle S. Lee for taking the time to visit the cemetery and extract the above information.

American Surnames
by Elsdon C. Smith
"Fruit trees engendered numerous surnames." "English Cherry and German
Kirschbaum (Cherry Tree)." It is the 839 most popular name and about 31,865
people had the surname Cherry in 1969, when the book was published.
Because Cherries are found through much of Europe, it is hard to think about
the Cherry family springing up in just one area like Scotland or Romania.
I think a name like Cherry was used in several areas when surnames were
first being taken, and maybe they had being a orchard owner in common. The
Norman version of the name was de Cherrie. Many of the US Cherry families
came from France by way of England and were Hugenots. They came to America
for religious reasons. The Italian names that sounded like Cherry was Cerri
or Cericola.
I think the name Cherry would be as widespread as the fruittree.

Wes,
I like how your mind works, I guess because I go in the same direction with some of my research. Asking myself similar questions.
Here is some info that I saved while doing some research on the Cherry surname: (I got this from about.com/library.) I also have other data in regards to the cherry tree history from other libraries, but you can also do a search for additional data on the Internet.
"Cherry history
The cherry is one of the world's oldest cultivated fruits, along with its cousin apricot. Cultivation dates back to 300 B.C. and its lineage dates back even farther. The common cherry tree, Prunus avium, is native to the temperate areas of eastern Europe and western Asia and is part of the Rose family. Its name comes originally from the Greek, and in Latin means of or for the birds, due to the birds' obvious love of the fruit. The English word cherry originates from the Assyrian karsu and Greek kerasos. The tree was beloved by the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans both for its beautiful flowers and its versatile fruit.
Although a different species of cherry was already strongly established in America by the time the first colonists arrived, the new settlers brought along their favorite European variety and eventually cross-bred the two. Today, 90 percent of the commercial cherry crop is grown in the U.S., mostly in Michigan, California, Oregon and Washington. The most popular variety is the Bing cherry, which was developed by Seth Luelling in Milwaukie, Oregon in 1875 and allegedly named for his Manchurian foreman. There are now thousands of varieties of cherries and most are still picked by hand.
Cherry legend and lore
A Japanese legend tells of a brave warrior who lived to a great age, outliving friends and family. His most beloved memory was of playing beneath a cherry tree in Iyo during his youth. One summer, the tree died, which the man took as a sign that it was also his time to die. Although a new cherry tree was planted nearby, the old warrior was unconsoled. During the winter season, the old man pleaded with the dead tree to bear flowers just one more time, vowing that if his request was granted, he would give up his long life. True to his promise, he committed hara-kiri beneath the dead branches of the tree. As his blood and spirit soaked down to the roots, the tree bloomed once again in the dead of winter. Legend holds this tree in Iyo still blooms in winter every year on the anniversary of the warrior's death, though all other trees nearby lay in dormant winter state. "
I may have missed it because I have been extremely busy, but if you will send me your line-I will see if I have anything in my database that will help you.
I have a lot of data on the Cherry line that I have not entered into my computer (I like to do the research more than enter the data.) As I enter my data, if I come across anything with your line, I will share with you. The only thing I as, is please list the source info for what I share with you. (not me as the source).
Send me the line you are researching to my email address jimair(a)ev1.net and I will see what I can do to help you.

I would suggest doing a search for One Name Study Guild (ONS) and contacting the person or persons researching the Cherry surname, as to the origin of the name and definition of the name.
Here are a few examples as to the origin of the Cherry surname:
THE NAME AND FAMILY OF CHERRY
Compiled by The Media Research Bureau
Washington, D.C.
The name of Cherry is derived from the residence of its first bearers at or near a cherry tree or at a place so named. It is found in ancient English and early American records in the various forms of Cherie, Chirir, Chery, Cherye, Cherey, Cherrey, Cherrie, Cherrye, and Cherry, of which is the spelling used most frequently in America in modern times.
Families bearing this name were seated at early dates in the English Counties of Derby, Chester, Berkshire, Surrey, and Hereford, as well as in the city and vicinity of London. These families were, generally speaking, of the landed gentry of Great Britain.
* Cherry Line, 1st, English
Based on Surnames in the United Kingdom; Kerry's Hist. and Antiquities of the Hundred of Bray, Bray, Berkshire, 1861; Pedigree of Cherry of Maidenhead and Bray, given here. the family name in France, being "de Cherres", readily changed in English to Cherries and so to Cherry.
These are a few links that will possibly help with the origin of surnames:
http://www.mayrand.org/meaning-e.htm (**I think if you read this first, it will possibly help you.**)
http://www.surnameguide.com/http://www.genealogytoday.com/names/origins/index.htmlhttp://www.last-names.net/
Hope this helps you some, just use any of the search engines, dogpile or google are pretty good-type in One Name Study Guilds or surname definition or surname origin.
I am fascinated by the amount of research that these people have done. I have contacted someone from the Guild on another surname. They are very informative and can steer you in the right direction. The information on the Cherry surname that I shared above is from my own personal research.
Please be careful of the organizations that supposedly "research" your family name and crest for a fee. Many errors occur from such organizations.
The ONS is an accredited organization. I do not know if anyone is doing a one name study for the Cherry surname.
There are also places on the Internet where you can find the origin and definition of first/given names. That is pretty interesting also, if you have family members with unusual first names. Some of our ancestors were very intelligent in naming their children. When you research what the name actually meant.
Most of the places I use the data is copyrighted and you have to receive permission to use the info, but I have not had a problem receiving permission.
Good luck,
Barb
One question. Is the fruit tree we call today, cherry, the same as it
was called back then? Has the name changed, or the meaning? I tend to go
along with the theory of the name coming from a place, object or
occupation but after reading some more from
<http://www.mayrand.org/meaning-e.htm> the meaning could be something
entirely different. i. e: In Different countries or localities. I did a
search on the net but only came up with a site that wanted money to do
the searching.
Also, I have noticed from my own research, my grandfather Cherry/Cherrey
had what would be called 'splendid script'. Everyone's handwriting has
degenerated from his. Yet his wife was illiterate, learning to write
some time after marriage. Does this mean he or his ancestor/ancestors
was landed or of nobility?
It always surprises me to find how little I know.
Wes
The Harper and Collins Puplication of Scottish Surnames, claim that the Surname Cherry/Cherrie origonated in Ayshire Scotland.
The American Blacks Publication also claim that the surname Cherry origonated in Scotland, can anyone throw further light on this as I have allways believed that the name was of Norman origin, allthough I understand that Normans did settle in Scotland as well as England.
It would be great to learn possibly more about this particular name and it is hoped that persons of that name may be interested enough to investigate further. C.H.Johnson
Charles and all,
I would very much like to find the origin of the name but have had about
as much luck as you seem to have. I've heard, but haven't found the
article, that it originated from the gypsies of Romania. Has anyone else
found this?
The name has come, I am told and this seems to be a common legend, from
France and they were chased out for religious reasons, (they were
Huguenots, French Calvinists of the 16th or 17th centuries) and then on
to England. This seems to argue the article from the Harper and Collins
Publication as the name origins may have been further back than
Scotland. Or quite possibly, there was more than one origin?
Hope to know someday,
Wes Cherry

HI All
My search for the Cherry name, starts at or in or
somewhere around NJ and ends up in Green County, Ohio. In particular:
* Patrick Cherry/Rachel Wortman. Patrick died 1832 in Carmel, Wabash Co.,
Illinois and marrying Rachel in 1776.
This has been my brick wall. This is also my second Cherry line and so
far not connected at all with my father's line from England, i.e.:
** William Cherry b. abt 1822 in Lilley, Hertford, England or any Cherry
names on this list. Hope to correct this someday.
