The Secret Out
It was published in the Recorder some time ago that a marriage had taken
place
secretly in Americus, and all efforts to learn the names of the parties in
this
Gretna Green affair were fruitless. The secret came to the surface in that
city yesterday when Mr. E.L. Cherry, of Milledgeville, appeared to claim and
take home his bride, nee Miss Alice Goodman. Mr. Cherry had been making
regular monthly visits to Miss Goodman, and during a visit about a month ago,
the last one until yesterday, when he came to take home his bride, they
decided
to marry secretly. It was kept a profound secret for a month, and not even
the
immediate family of the contracting parties knew anything of it.

Oh Bless You!
Thank you so much for sharing the picture with me by personal email!
I belong to a small group of Cherry researchers at Yahoo.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CherryFamilyTX/
I have shared documentation and photos with the group.
You might be interested in checking it out. Great bunch! We had a small reunion in May that I was unable to attend due to medical problems with my brother-in-law, but we plan on trying to have another one.
I grew up in the Liberty Co. area and was a member of Concord Baptist Church when I was young. My grandmother lived in Romayor and I still have relatives in Liberty, Polk, San Jacinto counties.
At the Yahoo Cherry group, I have pictures of Aaron Cherry's grave, the sign stating it was first permanent white settlement, etc. If you check the site out, my photos are under Daniel's Ranch Bldgs (I think or something like that) - then I have under files, documentation that I have shared. I have a lot more, I just don't have time to scan it and download it to the group. I have copies of Joaquin's Spanish Land Grants original and transcribed that refer to land adjoining Aaron Cherry's land. If you would like copies, you can see them at the group site or I can email them to you in a zip file later. You will have to be patient with me, as my brother in law, is having medical problems again. He had two major surgeries in Sept and is still recovering.
I hope it is ok with you if I share what you sent me with the group.
Thank you again so very much for your generosity.

A a friend of mine gave me a catalogue of the John J. Ford Collection by Stack's Auction that contains a photo and discussion of a War Bounty Scrip that was issued to James Cherry, a descendant of Aaron Cherry, for his service in the War with Mexico. It was transferred in Colorado County, Texas on March 28, 1848. It also states that that Aaron's 3 sons, William and two others served in the Texas Revolution
The discussion also states that Aaron was the first white man to permanently settle in Texas in Liberty County in 1819. Don't know if that is true, or not.

I am researching the CHERRY family that originated in Warrick, Orange Co., New York with John D. CHERRY. He married Rachel ? in 1845 and by 1950 they are living in Pa. with a two year old son, James Leonard CHERRY.....They are in Rockford, Winnebago Co., Illinois in 1860 with children, James, Julia Henrietta, b. 1854, Caroline Marietta, b. 1857, and Mary b.May 1860. Rachel dies of Consumption in 1861 and is buried in the Cedar Bluff Cemetery. John D. goes off to the Civil War and dies of injuries in 1863. Julia, my gr-gr-gr-grandmother, marries James A. Smith and has two children, Elizabeth Ellen b.,1873, and my gr-gr-grandfather, Harry George Smith, b. June, 1876. Julia dies in September of 1876 and on her tombstone is written "Little Charlie" aged 2....We don't have any record of a Charlie? Possible twin of Harry George?? Does anyone have any info about this family or what happens to them? Thank you!

Thank you!
I would appreciate anything that you or anyone else will share with me.
I have a lot of documentation on Aaron Cherry in an effort to find data,
documentation, etc. on Honour.
I have made this available to all through a Cherry group with Yahoo.
This is the link:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CherryFamilyTX/
It is a small group, Ralph Cherry is the moderator. If you want to check it
out. I also did a photo album (Daniels Ranch) with photos of the buildings
at Daniel's Ranch, Aaron's tombstone. Then I made a file (Barbara
Chandler-My files shared with group).
Again, thank you for anything that you or anyone will share with me on this
line. Especially in regards to Honour Cherry, parents, siblings, ancestors,
etc.
I would really like to be able to document how Honour arrived in Texas.
There is speculation by some researchers that she traveled with Aaron
Cherry's party, but I have not seen anything to document that theory. (I am
also considering that it might actually be right, because during that time
period info about women was not documented/recorded, etc.)
I also need an exact location for Honour Cherry's gravesite other than a
knoll in Big Sandy. (I grew up in that area-it is close to the Indian
Reservation with a lot of woods and could be just about anywhere.) I would
really like to visit my 5th great grandmother's grave to take flowers and
pay my respects.
I have seen the pension records for the other Aaron Cherry that some
researchers confuse with our Aaron Cherry - it is not the same Aaron
Cherry-he even has a different spouse. At this time I do not have copies of
our Aaron Cherry's pension papers. I have not had time to do much research
due to medical problems with my brother-in-law that require most of my time.
Due to this, I would ask that anyone that wants copies of the data I have,
please check it out with the group. Other members have also shared data.
Thanks,
Barb

1900 Farmer
Genealogical & Biographical Annals of
Northumberland County
by J. L. Floyd, 1911.
William J. Gass was reared upon the farm,
and remained with his father until he reached the age of twenty.
He then resolved to try his fortune in the West,
where he remained three years, spending two years
of that time in the Rocky Mountain region.
His experiences were varied and interesting,
but he returned to his native home and has since
remained in Northumberland county.
After coming back home he was with his father for a time,
until he took the farm in the Irish Valley,
in Shamokin township, where he still makes his home.
It was the old homestead of Solomon Himmel, one of the pioneers in this
region,
and here he has since worked and prospered, becoming one of the most
substantial men of his community.
For about fifteen years Mr. Gass also followed the butcher business
in connection with farming,
eventually selling his interests in that line to his sons.
He has been active in local affairs,
particularly in the welfare of the public schools,
having served fifteen years as school director,
which office he still holds;
he has served twice as president of the school board.
He has also been auditor of his township.
The high standing he enjoys among his fellow citizens
could be shown in no better way than by his long
continuance in positions of responsibility,
and his influence has always been considered a factor
in local enterprises of every sort.
He was made a Mason in 1872
, is a member and past master of Elysburg Lodge No. 414,
F. & A.M., and is a member of the Grange at Paxinos. Politically he is a
Democrat. His religious connection is with the U. B. Church.
Mr. Gass married Clara Moyer, daughter of David Moyer and
granddaughter of Jacob Moyer.
They have had the following children:
Oswald P.
, who lives at Reed's station, this county;
Harry S., who lives in Sunbury;
Sidney W., of Shamokin, this county, who is in the butcher business;
Lorenzo D., who is associated with his brother Sidney;
Harvey L., at home;
Ursula, wife of William Moody;
Bertha, wife of J. Wesley Richie;
and Annie.
WILLIAM J. GASS, a prominent farmer of Shamokin township, is a
native of that township, born Aug. 29, 1845
and is the only son of Martin Gass, one of the leading citizens of this
district in his day.

I do not recall seeing whatever message this applies to. I am a descendent
of Thomas Cherry, Jr., who had a brother Aaron, and Thomas Perrin Cherry and
I am a DAR with acceptance of proofs by DAR for these two gentlemen as Rev.

Paula I applaud you, for your discovery, I have been researching this family for over 20 years, I am a previous member of DAR, I could not join on the Cherry side due to no proof of lineage at that time. My maiden name is CHERRY. I am a direct descendant of Jacob Cherry Sr.and his son John V. However, my Great Uncle had done a lot of research but was suckered in by Homer. I have not been able to prove anything, other than immediate family, of his information. One thing I learned with DAR is PROOF>>>>> Wish I had seen this posting sooner....I quite looking on here a long time ago, as I never really found anything worth the time...but this was worth it....
