Dear Gaila,
Thanks for your assistance.
Let me tell you a little about my Cherrys.
The first concrete evidence is that we have two brothers, Henry Cherry and Andrew Jackson Cherry who lived the majority of their lives in Dothan, AL where they died. They married sisters Mary Polly and Roseanna Jane Sheffield around 1850. They were living in Dothan at the time but were from Early Co, GA. Their mother was married several times, and gave them land in Dothan after the two families spent 10 or 11 years in North Florida. We find them in the 1850 and 1860 census in Walton Co. In 1861, Rachel Antley, the girl's mother, gives them land next to herself in Dothan. One of the grandsons of Andrew Jackson Cherry did some research and states that the boys father died in Orangeburg, SC before the boys really knew him and the mother remarried to a Stephenson man then moved to North Florida. She died about 1871 in Dothan and is buried in the Smyrna Baptist Cemetery just outside Dothan. Henry had 25 children and Andrew Jackson had 8. We have traced most of them fairl!
y completely, but have never had a lead on their father. Sure, we saw the census records with Cherrys in Orangeburg, but have never been able to put anything together until recently.
In 1810 in Orangeburg, there is a Mrs Cherry listed. We feel that this is the boys grandfather. There are non listed in 1820. We don't know why. Then in 1830 there is a James Cherry listed. Then in 1840 there is a William Cherry and a James Cherry. They live next door to each other as the 1841 deed mentioned shows. Then in 1850 there are two James, a William and a Patrick. But our section of this family has moved to Florida and the father was supposed to have died. This is where our problems have com into play.
Our Henry was born Christmas Day 1825 and our Andrew Jackson was born in 1831 or thereabouts. According to a researcher in 1935, there was a third son George Washington Cherry who stayed behind in SC and then moved to NC to be with other relatives who was the oldest son. We have nothing on him at all.
Well, the short story turned out long so I will close. Any help would be appreciated. Tell me or your William
