Friends -
With the new year on us - and (eventually!) new information coming from the
1901 census, I thought it might be a good idea to repost my interest, so this
is the latest.
My paternal Great grandfathers family, the Cherringtons of Wigan, was pretty
extensive. My Grandmother told me her fathers name was George Allen
Cherrington (although most sources refer to him simply as George Cherrington)
and that he was a driver on the railways. He married twice, firstly to Martha
Jane on 23 May 1887, the 19 yo dau. of James Howlett. Together they had ...
JOSEPH C. - Served Royal Artillery WW1, Driver on the railways, moved to
Trafford Park; married. Anne; Children Jean
ALFRED C. - Was a driver on the railways; married
CLARA & 'GINNIE' C. - Were co-owners of a fish & chip shop; 72 Ormskirk Rd,
Newtown; both d. unmarried
GEORGE C. - Confined to a wheelchair. d. unmarried
ALBERT C. - b. 1900; Adopted by Sherringtons, Driver on the railways; married
an Anderton.
HARRY C. - Probably b. 1900; Miner; married Olive; Children Irene, Albert
On September 18, 1902 George, who was listed as a Railway Engine Driver, a
37yo Widower (therefore b.1864-5), married Betsy Greenhaugh, a Reeler in a
cotton mill, aged 28 the dau. of a deceased coal miner. On Grandmas bth
certificate in 1903 her mothers surname is given as Greenhalgh
MARTHA JANE HOWLETT C. - My paternal Grandmother; b.13 Jul 1903 at 21 Chapel
St, Ince
married Thomas Anderton; 14/07/1928
Children George Alan (my father, emigrated to Australia), Joan, Joyce, Thomas
JOHN C. - b. 1904; Miner; married Fannie; children Joan, John (Emmigrated to
Australia), plus another son
ANNE C. - Married William Foster (Bro. of Sam); Children Mary, Henry, Irene,
Anne
ELY C. - b. 1906; Miner; Married Nellie; Children George, Henry
EDITH C. - Married Sam Foster (Bro. of William); Children Jean, Leslie
ARTHUR C. - d. unmarried
My Dads' cousin John Cherrington says the family originally came from
Wolverhampton. Dad & John have retired to within a kilometre of each other
and any information will be shared. Any help on this will be most gratefully
received. Anyone want any Australian research done? My Home Email is
