Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Accusing Cousins
--Judy Ryden jryden(a)roguecc.edu
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~spratlen/
I agree with most of what Suzi Plooster wrote in last week's RootsWeb
Review (RWR 5:47 "Sharing, Caring, and Paying"). I've been in the same
boat of being asked to pay to send someone information too bulky or
complex to send over the Internet.
However, Suzi and others should not be so quick to judge the publishing
of information as being "their" info. I received some material from a
5-times-removed "cousin" a couple of years ago. Since that time, I have
been researching our joint line and published my findings on the Web.
This "cousin" immediately wrote me accusing me of publishing without
her permission. I sent her my original sources from my own research. The
names and relationships I ended up with were indeed the same as what
she'd sent me, but I had done my own research. I've never heard from
her since -- no apology.
[Editor's note: It is unfortunate that some *cousins* do not understand
that no one owns our ancestors or the uncopyrightable facts about them,
such as their names, birth dates and places, spouses' names, dates and
places of marriages, and death dates and places. Of course, polite
genealogists acknowledge and give credit to those who have been kind
enough to share research information. However, there are many novice
online family historians who have not learned yet to record where they
obtained information or to give proper credit to their cousins.

Yorkshire Parish and Probate Records. Discovering your English roots
prior to the civil registration of vital records in 1837 can mean
searching through the records of individual parishes. Luckily, many of
these records are extant and some date back to 1538.
Yorkshire, in the northeast region of England, is the home to a famous
pudding of the same name and the Bronte sisters, authors of influential
literary works. Additionally, this region is the ancestral home of many
Americans whose Quaker ancestors emigrated from there in the 17th and
18th centuries. Although records from Yorkshire have been available on
the site for some time, Ancestry.com is continually adding updates in
an
effort to ensure the highest quality for those using this database.
Yorkshire, the largest county in Britain, lies in the industrial heart-
land of Britain and includes such cites as Bradford, Sheffield, and
Leeds. Parish records from the county range in date from the early
1500s
through the mid-1800s and can provide an invaluable resource for
researchers interested in this area. Access these valuable records and

What? You Have No Mail!
An increasing number of RootsWeb Mailing List subscribers and their
ISPs have begun using spam-filtering tools. These filters do not always
function well with the delivery of Mailing List messages. Filters that
require the sender of a message to register at a website to allow mail
to be delivered are generally not compatible with Mailing Lists. Some
filters require Mailing List addresses to be added to a Safe List or
a special "approved" Mailing List section.
If you or your ISP use a spam-filtering program and you are a RootsWeb
Mailing List subscriber, remember to consider your list mail when setting up
your options. If you have questions as to whether or not your
filters can be adapted to accommodate list mail, your ISP tech support
representatives should be able to assist you in selecting the proper
settings.
Consider spam filters as a likely culprit, if you suspect you might not
be receiving all of your Mailing List messages, and assuming that you
have done the following:
--Obtained a list of all your subscribed to Mailing Lists from Password
Central: http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ just to be sure you have not
been removed from the list in question. (By the way, did you know that
Password Central can be accessed by clicking on the Passwords Tab shown at
the top on any RootsWeb page?)
--Checked the threaded Mailing List archives for the list
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ to be sure messages have been posted that
you have not received. Type in the Mailing List name (without any -L or -D)
and click to view an outline of messages to look for those you
might have missed.
---Contacted the list administrator at: LISTNAME-admin(a)rootsweb.com
(replace the word LISTNAME with the actual name of the list -- using no
-L or -D) to check whether the administrator has received any bounced
mail notices for your address and, if so, to learn the reason for them.
If you are currently subscribed to a Mailing List and messages have
been posted to it that you have not received, spam filtering may be the
cause whether or not the administrator has received bounces. In some
instances, spam filters result in your ISP (or your installed
application) simply discarding the messages with no notice to you. In
other cases, the administrator will have received bounces indicating
that the list mail is considered spam.
Once you determine that spam filters are the problem, check your setups
-- if you've installed a spam filter. Or check with your ISP tech
support representative, if your ISP has installed the filters. If the
problem is with your ISP then its tech support should be able to assist
you in resolving the conflict once you explain that you want to receive
RootsWeb list mail, and that it is not spam.

A couple of items here to share with you.
Regarding the Free Census images...I don't know what has happened (maybe the site got too busy) but I can't even access it this morning. I have tried several times before deciding to send out this email. Maybe if we all give it a few days rest it will come back up. I know the email was sent to all 8 of the lists that I admin and several of the lists I am subscribed to, so it probably went out to nearly ALL the RootsWeb lists and then quite possibly forwarded on to people offlist also. So figure several million trying to access the page in the last couple days.
The other item on the agenda is the changing of my list admin address back to the elaine_dee(a)hotmail.com address, since those problems seem to be cleared up with RootsWeb and yahoo is personally giving me problems. I just want you all to be aware and know how to reach me offlist should you need too. This yahoo address will eventually just die a slow and painful death! ;)
Thanks everyone for your patience on this,
Lainee

Hiya everyone,
I have gotten several messages privately saying they can't open that page. I just went back in and it is working!
You HAVE to go to http://librarycommission.lib.wv.us FIRST and follow the steps as laid out in my previous email. You CAN'T jump straight to the last link.
SO...go to the http://librarycommission.lib.wv.us then click on the Fall Databases then scroll down to the bottom and click on http://trials.proquest.com/proquest/servlet/TrialsController?&userid=66861
***Course they have to make it difficult since it is a freebie ;)

Click on: http://librarycommission.lib.wv.us and then click on: FALL 2002 Database Trials Web Page

The "Trial" expires: 12/31/02
Lots of libraries are subscribing to the Heritage Quest Census......... Check the libraries in your own community and neighboring communities...... Most do require you to have a library card and they are using the "Bar Code"...... For those of you that live in smaller communities.... perhaps you have a family member or close friend living in one of the communities that does subscribe to the Heritage Quest Census databases and that your relatives or friend will let you use their "Library Bar Code"..... Some of the larger libraries have a number of databases that might be of interest to you..... therefore you might consider "Borrowing" several different "Library Bar Codes" from your friends..... [All you need is the numbers]......
I have tried the above site and it works......... It does not have the "Soundex" feature..... therefore you will probably need to try various spellings of your surname.....

The RootsWeb.com Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and Privacy Policy have
been updated. Although the majority of the policies regarding website
content remains the same, the updated policies include more specific
information that gives clarification to policies that were at one time
vague.
The most notable change is in regard to the WorldConnect project.
Information about living individuals will now be routinely purged from
trees hosted on WorldConnect. If no death date is provided in a file,
then all genealogical information on persons born in 1930 or later will
be removed. The word LIVING will replace the given name, while the
surname will remain visible. This decision was made with extensive
thought and reflection on the interests and requests of our users, and
the ongoing need to protect the rights of the living.
We do understand that many researchers have a desire to share their
growing family tree, which includes living people, with others. The
Online Family Tree, available on Ancestry.com and MyFamily.com, allows
users to do this in a secure environment. After registering for a free
membership on Ancestry.com or MyFamily.com, users will have the
opportunity of inviting trusted individuals to view their trees on a
secure server.
Please note that those who are registered members Ancestry.com or
MyFamily.com already have the ability to do this. Users will need to
log-on to Ancestry.com using their current user name and password and
select the "Family Trees" tab. Users will then be able to upload an
existing tree, or create a new tree from scratch.
We continue to appreciate your participation and ongoing support of
RootsWeb.com.

ANNOUNCING DEAD FREDS
GENEALOGY PHOTOGRAPH ARCHIVE
DeadFred.com, a new web site designed to connect the living present with the quiet past, posted its searchable database for public use this month.
Using this free database, people can easily search through thousands of identified photographs for their long-lost relatives. Currently, over 1000 surnames representing 2000+ individuals have been identified and added to the database. In addition, the site includes a List of Contributors, a page of regularly updated mystery photographs, an online bulletin board, helpful links to other genealogy sites and a contact page. People can even submit their own photographic heirlooms for posting.
I once came across a photograph dating back to 1902 of a woman and a baby from New Jersey. The woman was identified as Ms. Griegson, and the babys name was William. After doing some online research, I discovered that William had died in 1995, but I succeeded in finding the contact information for Williams son. What a pure thrill it was to tell this unsuspecting man that I had a photo of his father at a couple of months old being held by his grandmother! I sent him the photo, and the idea that evolved into DeadFred.com was born, said Mr. Joe Bott of Springdale, founder of the Archive.
Mr. Botts great-great-grandfather was born during the reign of Frederick III and died shortly before the emperors death. Therefore, Mr. Bott decided to give Frederick III, Emperor of Germany and King of Prussia, a place of honor on the site. In creating DeadFred.com, he recognizes his own family lineage and provides others a unique vehicle for tracing their own roots.
I realized that the Genealogy Society was fragmented when it came to photos; there was no comprehensive archive of photos that was organized from a genealogical standpoint, continued Mr. Bott. Therefore, DeadFred.com is the first of its kind. It fills a specific need. It is a historical and cultural survey that is recorded in the most dynamic of mediahuman individuals.
DeadFred.com is one of the many up and coming web sites designed by creative agency Vulcan Creative Labs. To begin digging up the past, simply go to www.DeadFred.com and begin a search.

QUICK TIP FROM READERS. Less Can Be Better
Thanks to: Julia M. Case juliecase(a)prodigy.net
Editor of Missing Links e-zine: http://www.petuniapress.com/
TOO MUCH AND/OR TOO RECENT INFORMATION can create artificial barriers in online research. Try searching on your earliest known ancestor in a particular family because there are more people out there who will be able to connect to him or her. Include only the minimum search terms in case someone has your Ichabod Crane recorded as I. Crane in their files or has no town, parish, or county location listed. If
you specify too much in your searches, any portion of it might not "match" in a given search thereby causing you to hit the dreaded brick wall.

TROUBLESHOOTING MAILING LISTS ISSUES. RootsWeb Mailing List messages
are sent in plain text to enable researchers using a wide variety of e-mail programs to read the messages and to prevent the spread of e-mail viruses and worms. For this reason, messages intended for posting on a RootsWeb Mailing List must be sent as plain text (no HTML--hypertext markup language or RTF--rich text formatting).
If you attempt to send a message to a RootsWeb Mailing List in an unacceptable format you will receive a help message explaining the plain text requirement. Instructions for sending mail as plain text in the most widely used e-mail programs can be found here: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/listadmins/plaintext.html
Digests are comprised of individual plain-text list messages and are distributed in a form called multipart/digest, part of the MIME (Multi-purpose Internet Mail Extensions) standard with the exception of ROOTS-L and the newsgroup gatewayed lists. Whether you receive RootsWeb digests inline (as one long series of messages one after the other in a row aka flat presentation) or as separate attachments that must each be opened individually depends upon the manner in which your e-mail program and/or your ISP (Internet Service Provider) handle the digests.
Problems associated with digests such as individual messages within a digest that appear garbled, digests that are cut off, blank, do not include all messages listed in the index, or which have attachments within digests that are either missing or cannot be opened, all generally have to do with the processing of the digest on the receiving end. Check to be sure your e-mail program is set to handle digests inline, if possible. Persistent problems should be brought to the attention of your ISP or e-mail service provider for resolution. As an alternative solution you may wish to switch to the list (regular) mode.
You should receive copies of all messages posted by the other subscribers to all the Mailing Lists to which you subscribe, including messages you have sent to the list yourself. If you do not receive a copy of your own list messages usually the problem lies with a filter you or your ISP have set that either discards mail coming from your own e-mail address or which places your messages into a special folder you have overlooked.
If you believe you are not receiving some or all of the messages from a Mailing List, check to be sure that you are currently subscribed to the list. Obtain a list of all RootsWeb Mailing Lists to which you are subscribed by clicking on the Passwords tab on the RootsWeb masthead on any page or by going to Password Central:
http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/
If you discover that you are not subscribed to the Mailing List in question, send a new subscription request. If you are subscribed, check the Threaded Archives of the list to see whether messages have actually been posted to the list at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ Type in the Mailing List's name and browse through the most recent messages.
If you are subscribed to the list but are not receiving the list messages, write privately to the list administrator at: LISTNAME-admin(a)rootsweb.com (no -L or -D) replacing the word LISTNAME with the actual name of the list, for example: SMITH-admin(a)rootsweb.com Ask whether the administrator has received bounces for your e-mail address, and if so, request that the administrator send you a copy of the latest bounce with full e-mail headers. Information about obtaining full headers can be found here: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/listadmins/headersfull.html
Contact technical support personnel at your ISP or e-mail service provider about your non-receipt of Mailing List mail. Include the bounce message with full headers. Many e-mail providers recently have installed spam and virus filters and they do not always work reliably with Mailing List mail.
Once RootsWeb attempts to deliver Mailing List messages to your e-mail provider, it becomes the responsibility of the service provider to help you determine why you are not receiving them. Only your service provider can tell you when it is having e-mail server problems or if your account is over its quota -- RootsWeb cannot help you with these matters.
If you are having a problem sending a message through to a Mailing List, check to be certain you are properly subscribed and that you are sending the e-mail to the list address -- LISTNAME-L(a)rootsweb.com -- with the actual Mailing List's name in place of the word LISTNAME, regardless of whether you are subscribed in the digest or list (regular) mode. Check to make sure you are sending the message in plain text. If still unsuccessful, change the subject line, and resend your message. Messages sent with a blank subject line or with a subject that include certain words, such as "archive," may confuse SmartList, the Mailing List software, because they are interpreted as commands.
If you have more than one e-mail account and wish to be able to send messages to a RootsWeb Mailing List from an e-mail address other than the one under which you are subscribed, perhaps a work e-mail address or a spouse's account, contact the list administrator as explained above. The Mailing List administrator may opt to add your alternate e-mail address to the list's "accept list," which will achieve the desired
results without causing you to receive duplicate copies of Mailing List messages. The same option is available if your ISP uses variants in your e-mail address such as johndoe(a)anyisp.net and johndoe(a)mail.anyisp.net. The latter situation causes problems when sending mail from the variation of your address that isn't the exact address that is subscribed to the Mailing List.
Occasionally, disagreements occur among subscribers to a Mailing List. In such a situation the problem should be handled privately with the list administrator. List administrators are given a great deal of leeway in managing Mailing Lists -- within the bounds of the RootsWeb AUP (Acceptable Use Policy). http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/aup.html
However, if you feel you have a valid grievance, or if a problem is not handled within a reasonable time by the administrator, you may contact the RootsWeb HelpDesk for assistance: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help.cgi
Concerned about protecting your e-mail addresses from address harvesters and spammers in the Mailing List archives? Note that when you view a message in the Threaded Mailing Lists archives you see a normal e-mail address, but if you right-click anywhere on the page and select "view source" from the menu that appears, you will see that the e-mail addresses are encrypted and look something like: "uYTH." That is the source code that address harvesters see -- not the page as
you normally view it.
Addresses in the RootsWeb Interactive Searchable archives are displayed as dynamic pages created on the fly (as opposed to static permanent webpages) that are not accessible to address harvesting "spiders." These safeguards protect your e-mail address from harvesting by spammers as they do not take the time to gather addresses manually, which would be required otherwise.
