Hi Everyone, I am new to this list. I don't know much about Elizabeth. She
was born abt 1800 where? She married Samuel Adams 1823 in Lawrence County,
IL. She may have a brother John M.D. Chenoweth who was appointed guardian
to some of Elizabeth and Samuel children in 1846 when both Samuel and
Elizabeth died 1 day apart in February.
I have found one ref that says Absolum was Elizabeth's father, however, I
cannot prove this.
Does anyone recognize this family?
Judy
Thanks for sharing this on the Chenoweth list.. I wish I could share of
help in your lines however mine are very old lines that married down into
my TUCKER line born 1863 Albia Monroe Co. Iowa Emma B. TUCKER md. 1880
Albia Monroe Co. Iowa to Wm. BALTZLEY b. 1856 Henry Co. Iowa.. This line
come from John CHENOWETH to John to Mary then we change to ASHBROOK to
ASLBURY to TUCKER with women lines CALVERT, SMITH, COOKE, HENRY, HILYARD,
and KNIGHT related lines To CHENOWETH, ASHBROOK, ALSBURY, and TUCKER men.
If you can link to any of these maybe we have a link but I have very
limited data on all the lines prior to TUCKER line. If any others link to
my post always like to hear from fellow researchers.. Kathy I found your
post most informative and interesting your lucky to find such detail of the
unhappy event of your genealogy history but must be told as we all need to
share good and bad history.. I know some genealogist don't want the bad or
skeletons in their closet to show their heads.. but I say it make my
history much more interesting and brings the real life terms to it.. Thanks
again for posting this bit of history.. Good Luck to all that read...
Success to all in their efforts.. Cordially,

Hello, listers..
I thought I'd go ahead and post this to the Chenoweth list so that it will
be archived and available for other Chenoweth researchers.
Here are the news articles I have located about my grandfather's first wife,
Harriet M. CHENOWETH, daughter of Benjamin Guy CHENOWETH and Anna L. THORNE.
Harriet was born 28 April 1896 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio and died
11 Oct 1929 in Lakewood, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Her death certificate lists
her cause of death as: "Murdered. Shot through the head."
She first married my grandfather, Charles Wolcott REDFIELD, 16 March 1918,
in Cleveland, Ohio. They divorced in 1920 (don't yet have the record).
They had no children.
She then married Gustave Andrew STEINBRENNER, Jr., 28 June 1922 in
Cleveland, Ohio. They had two children, William (17 Sept 1923 - 06 Aug
1985) and Judith (abt. 1925- ?)
Here are two news articles found in the Cleveland Plain Dealer after Harriet
was killed.

Mrs. Harriett Steinbrenner, young Lakewood Matron, was shot to death late
yesterday at a Clifton Boulevard card party by a former roomer at her home,
believed by police to be the notorious "overall robber."
The shooting occurred at about 5:30 in the second floor hall of the
apartment house at 12228 Clifton Boulevard, where the murdered woman was one
of eight guests being entertained by Mrs. Irene Mount.
Mrs. Mount said that at about 5:15 her apartment bell rang and she
pushed the door buzzer, believing it to be (unreadable) (unreadable)
former roomer at the murdered woman's home, she said. He asked for Mrs.
Steinbrenner and waited in the hall while Mrs. Mount called her.
No one actually saw what followed, for the two walked down the hall
talking. Mrs. Mount partly closed her apartment door. A janitor on the
floor above was sweeping.
One shot was fired. The janitor, H. P. Gadveau, said he then heard
scuffling. Two more shots were fired and the apartment was in an uproar.
Party guests and tenants ran into the hall, finding Mrs. Steinbrenner dead
on the floor.
The killer ran down the stairs and escaped.
He and Mrs. Steinbrenner had had trouble over his borrowing her car
without permission. Yesterday she reported it stolen. The car was found
outside the apartment.
FIND OVERALLS.
In the tonneau was discovered a pair of blue overalls similar to the ones
worn by the robber of the Bowen Tea Room and the Lake Shore Hotel. Until
last week Mrs. Steinbrenner had been cashier at the hotel. Investigation of
Chaney's record showed he had served three prison terms.
Chaney had called at the Steinbrenner's home, 1205 Marlowe Avenue, during
the afternoon and asked a girl taking care of the Steinbrenner children,
William, 5, and Judith, 4, where he could find her. The girl did not know,
but it is believed he learned of the party from another source.
According to the husband of the murdered woman, Chaney had been a roomer
at their home for about a year, and often borrowed Mrs. Steinbrenner's car.
When he took it the last time and did not return Mrs. Steinbrenner reported
it stolen.
The last time Steinbrenner saw his wife, he says, was when he left in the
morning for his work as a mechanic in an East Side garage. Mrs.
Steinbrenner telephoned him in the afternoon to ask him to meet her at the
Clifton Boulevard address. He arrived shortly after the shooting. Mrs.
Mount's apartment is Suite 9.
Those who were there at the time of the murder were Mrs. Thomas R.
Lavelle, 2197 McKinley Avenue, Lakewood: Mrs. Merle Layman, Mrs. Helen
Brinkle and Mrs. Bertha Morris, all of Dayton, O; Mrs. Minnie Dietz, 4901
Denison Avenue S. W; Mrs. Bertha O'Donnell and Mrs. Anna Nolan, both of
11406 Durant Avenue N.E.

LINK DEAD KILLER
TO SIX ROBBERIES
Police Clean Up Holdups With Suicide of Overalls Gunman.
Walter Chaney, ex-convict who killed himself yesterday morning when
cornered by police who sought him for the murder of a young Lakewood mother
twelve hours before, was identified last night as the robber who perpetrated
six holdups in Cleveland in the last four weeks.
Police are sure Chaney also was the "overalls" robber who took $32 from
the night cashier at the Lake Shore Hotel, Lakewood, early last Sunday.
Chaney was identified late in the day as the man who robbed Mack's
Barbecue, 11517 Clifton Boulevard, N. W., twice in one week in September.
On Sept. 17 he took $85 and on Sept. 22 his loot was $40.
The dead man likewise was identified as the "overalls" robber who took
$298 at Bowen's Tea Room, 6709 Detroit Avenue N. W., Sept. 29, when a number
of guests were being served.
The other three were:
Sept. 18-STANDARD OIL STATION, W. 117th Street and Madison Avenue; loot,
$35.
Sept. 21-EDGEWATER PARK SERVICE STATION, 9305 Lake Avenue N. W.; $4.
Oct. 3-CITIES SERVICE GAS STATION, W. 61st Street and Detroit Avenue N.
W.; $10.
Detective Lieutenant Delmar Potts of the Lakewood police said that
employees of the Lake Shore Hotel were to view Chaney's body in an effort to
identify him as the masked robber who visited that hostelry.
The body was held last night at the Saxton-Daniels-Mastick Funeral Home,
13215 Detroit Avenue, Lakewood, pending further identifications.
In ten years of knocking around Cleveland, Chaney had been a part-time
bootlegger and was known to some of the night life crowd. One night about a
year ago, according to information yesterday, he precipitated a noisy fist
fight in one of the town's night clubs.
Chaney killed himself yesterday morning as police broke into a house at
16601 Lorain Avenue to arrest him for the murder of Mrs. Harriet
Steinbrenner, 33, of 1205 Marlowe Avenue, Lakewood, in whose home he had
been a roomer.
Lakewood and Cleveland police squads had closed in on the Lorain Avenue
house yesterday morning after an all-night search for the slayer. Capt. E.
J. Newport, Lieut. Charles Baum and Detective Ed Graske were in the Lakewood
group. Detective Lieutenant Kurt Gloeckner headed the Cleveland police.
A tip from a taxicab driver had led the police to the house. The
searchers lay in wait for some time as they saw a shadow flit past the
windows of the place, which was supposed to be vacant.
The police closed in on the house and Chaney, perceiving he was trapped,
shot himself through the head.
