They had a daughter, Elizabeth Anne Cheney, born 1843, also in Sawtry, Huntingdonshire, England....

I recently posted a query regarding John Cheney and received some very
helpful responses. I want to thank those of you who replied.
I now want to pose a speculation based on some information I've gathered. I
am descended from John and Martha (Smithe) Cheney of Roxbury and Newbury,
MA. I've not had any evidence of John's ancestry, only the suggestion that
he was the brother of William, also found in Roxbury, MA.
Jean Snyder responded by telling me that Charles Banks reported in his book
"Topographical Dictionary of the English Emigrants to New England 1620-1650"
that both John and William landed at Roxbury and were from Waltham Abbey.
This caused me to check my files where I found an article in the April 1995
NEHGS Register by Douglas Richardson titled "Heath-Johnson-Morris Update:
The Ancestry of Agnes (Cheney) Heath." Mr. Richardson's article involved
his research of Cheneys from Waltham Abbey, Essex, England. While his
efforts were focused on Agnes Cheney who married William Heath, he did
provide information about the rest of the Cheneys(The source of the
information below). This included a reference to William and John Cheney,
born about 1588/90, sons of Ralph and Anne (Slaney) Cheney. I believe this
is my John Cheney and his brother William who immigrated to MA, and I'd love
to hear from others as to whether they agree or disagree.
If this speculation is valid, then the line briefly looks like this:
1. Robert Cheney, b. abt 1460, married unknown, was the father of:
2. Robert Cheney, b. abt 1490 and died abt 1542, married unknown, was the
father of:
3. Robert Cheney, b. abt 1520 and died abt 1568, married Joan Harrison
(daughter of John and Agnes Harrison), was the father of:
4. Ralph Cheney, b. abt 1551 and died abt 1599, married Anne Slaney, and
was the father of:
5. John Cheney, b. abt 1590 and died 1666 in Newbury, MA.
5. William Cheney, b. abt 1588.
I note that Walter Davis assumes John Cheney to have been from Essex Co.,
England, as well.
Does anyone have any comments on this speculation? I'd love to hear from
anyone with information relevant to this.
