Hi,
I'm new to this list, and I'm hoping someone can confirm or refute some
information I have.
I descend from John and Martha (Smithe) Cheney through their son Peter who
married Hannah Noyes. My line continues through their daughter Martha who
married William Worcester.
I have copied pages from a secondary source titled: "A Genealogical History
of the Clark and Worth Families" written by Carol Clark Johnson and printed
in 1970.
On pages 46-51 she provides some information about her Cheney connections.
She takes the family back to Sir John Cheney, a Knight of Fen Ditton in
Cambridge, England. The descent she proposes is as follows:
1. Sir John Cheney married Katherine, daughter of Sir Lawrence Pabenham and
Elizabeth Engaine, and was the father of:
2. Lawrence Cheney of Fen Ditton, who married Elizabeth Cockayne, and was
the father of:
3. Sir John Cheney of Fen Ditton, who married Elizabeth Rempton, and was
the father of:
4. William Cheney, buried at Boston, England, who married Frances Cheney
(daughter of Sir Thomas Cheney, Lord warden of the Cirque Porte), and was
the father of:
5. John Cheney, of Bennington (born at Boston, England), who married
(1)Elizabeth (?) and (2)widow Alice Skiner of Frieston. He was the father
of:
6. William and John Cheney, said to be brothers who immigrated to MA.
In my previous research, I've read "The Cheney Genealogy" by Charles Pope,
and I've read the family histories of Walter Davis. Neither of these
respected researchers claim a relationship between John and William,
although Pope states there is no evidence either way.
Does someone have something more recent, or any credible information that
suggests the above referenced line might be valid?
I would be delighted to share what information I have, and would love to
hear from anyone with information that could prove or disprove the above
speculation.
Gordon

Do you by change have any Browne lineage that crosses the Cheney. I
have a Katherine that married a Robert Browne and had a daughter named
