does anyone have the ancestry of these women;
Sarah Jane Castle, wife of Samuel F. Cheney
Lucy Warren, wife of John Cheney
are the Cheney's listed as Chaney's in the Michigan census? I can't find
Samuel or his children in 1860, '70, etc. they were in Genessee Co, as far
as I know, but I can't find them in any county.
Dear Cheney Cuzzins:
I thought the Dick CHENEY lineage had been on this list/digest previously,
but guess not.
I don't know any more details regarding Dick, but you may want to contact
the Harold CHENEY below - he may have more to offer by now.
Have great days and peaceful nights!

A correspondent, Harold Cheney (desc. of William) has found the
descent of RICHARD CHENEY, former Secretary of Defense in the
Bush Administration. A nice piece of genealogical detective
work, I'd say. Read on:
Hi,
You may recall that a minor item on my to-do list was to figure out
if Dick Cheney, former Secretary of Defense and Representative from
Wyoming, is in the line of WILLIAM [1] CHENEY of Roxbury. I finally
got a chance to do some research on the subject, and have concluded
to my satisfaction that he is.
From his entry in WHO'S WHO:
RICHARD BRUCE CHENEY
b. Jan. 30, 1941, Lincoln, Nebraska
son of Richard Herbert and Marjorie Lauraine (Dickey) Cheney
From the 1900 and 1920 federal census indices for Nebraska:
1920
Vol.10 Enum.Dist.110 Sheet 3 Line 59
Dawson County, Sumner City
Cheney, Thomas H; white, age 50, born Ohio
Margaret E; wife, age 42, born Indiana
Richard H, son; age 4 6/12, born Nebraska
1900
Vol.10 Enum.Dist.95 Sheet 12 Line 33
Dawson County, Sumner City
Cheney, Thomas H; white, age 31, born Apr 1869 in Ohio
Lillian S; wife, age 30, born Feb 1870 in Wisconson
Mildred; daughter, age 5, born June 1895 in Nebraska
The Thomas H. Cheney in the 1900 census is certainly the same person
as the Thomas Herbert [9] Cheney [#479 in Pope's Cheney Genealogy].
I'm reasonably confident that the Thomas H. Cheney in the 1920 census
is also the same person, and he is the grandfather of Richard Bruce
Cheney. If this were my line, I'd want to do additional research to
be sure, but this is good enough to satisfy my curiousity.
In the Pope book, the descent of Thomas Herbert [9] Cheney is:
William [1] Cheney of Roxbury
Thomas [2] Cheney
Benjamin [3] Cheney
Joseph [4] Cheney
William [5] Cheney
Ebenezer [6] Cheney
Elias Eaton [7] Cheney
Samuel Fletcher [8] Cheney
Thomas Herbert [9] Cheney
I just did a quick search on the US GenWeb site for Dawson Co.,
Nebraska. They have a marriage index that contains this entry:
Cheney, Thomas Herbert Tyler, Margaret Ellen Vol 7 Page 179
I'll probabably spend the $2.00 to get a copy of the marriage
license, which might contain enough information to confirm that
it's the same person.
Let me know if you want additional information on this.

BENJAMIN CHENEY JAN. 29, 1674/5 + MARY HARBERT (3)
JOSEPH CHENEY NOV. 2, 1729 + ELIZABETH TUCKER (4)
WILLIAM CHENEY SEPT. 8, 174 + ELIZABETH SWEET (5)
EBENEZER CHENEY FEB. 24, 1764 + HANNAH EATON (6)
ELIAS EATON CHENEY MAY 30, 1793 + LUCY FLETCHER (7)
SAMUEL FLETCHER CHENEY DEC. 2, 1829 + ELLA A PHILLIPS (8)

RICHARD HERBERT CHENEY JAN. 26, 1915 + MARJORIE LORRAINE DICKEY (10)
RICHARD BRUCE CHENEY JAN. 30, 1941 BORN LINCOLN, NEBRASKA
I have not verified the above, so...as always, use w/caution.
Will let you know when I do.
cheers
cheryl

Hello, In reference to Bob Quinn's message concerning

William Cheney, b. 17 February 1836 11. Alice Ellen Cheney, b. 15

Hi list
My uncle often said that we were related to Dick Cheney, the VP hopeful.
Our Cheney line runs thru John (1765-1838), Thomas Benson (1788-1846) and
then Andrew Jackson (1815-1886). Andrew Jackson was my great grandfather
on my mother's side.
Does anyone know 1. Dick's line and 2. is he related? If more family
members are required I can supply them.
Thanks for any help
Bob Quinn

Hi, Dave - its a quiet group just now. I haven't participated much myself,
but there seems flurries of activity and then quiet.
Here's a clip from an email my father just sent me, and I have not yet
investigated my Cheney branch. He, however, has, and I am awaiting his
materials he will send me about the Cheneys. (They married into us Higgins
in the IL/ IN/ KS area 1800's and Orndorffs, and had some things to do with
Cheney's Grove, IL USA) as below, in my dads's quote. Can you send us a
summary of your Cheneys and a line or two about what/who you are llooking
for, Cheney-wise? I remember my dad telling me that he had traced cheneys
back to England and back to some captain in the Roman army, and that a
researcher/relative here had seen the grave. Seems far fetched to me, but my
dad's a pretty upstanding Neurologist in Albany, and it may well be true. It
may well be that he was passing along things he was told then, too, and
hadn't checked out himself, so I don't yet know. Our last name is Higgins.
From my dad, recently:
"I still need to get some information to you re Cheney and Higgins
families.
I have recently contacted a distant cousin who has much information on the
Cheneys, and we have a common ancestor in Jonathan Cheney who emigrated
to Cheney's Grove, IL, with his family in the early 1800's from Champaign
county
Ohio (town of Goshen). Before that, he lived with his wife Catherine Owen in
what
is now Harrison county, W. Virginia. Actually Jonathan was the founder of
Cheney's
Grove; his grandfather was Willliam Cheney who was killed at the battle of
Bunker
Hill, and had been a Connecticut resident."
Cheers
Cheryl Higgis
