Hi List
Happy New Year to all.
I am seaching John CHEES(E)MAN born abt 1801/1803 East Peckham, Kent. (I believe his parents might have been Henry CHEESMAN & Elizabeth DARTNALL.)
John married Martha CROFT (born Benendin,Kent abt 1814) abt 1832 at Benendin.
The old family story handed down was that he came from a well-to-do family but was then disowned after marrying Martha (Mary?) who was a servant.
Anyway, John was sent out to Australia as a convict in 1839 for stealing potatoes. Martha followed him out with 2 boys, Henry and Alfred John.
Once in Aust, John was probably assigned to Martha, thereby being able to work freely & support his family. They had another 11 children between 1840 - 1856.
Has anyone know anything more about this couple or have any connections.
Happy to swap info.
