Hi Laura,
Thank you for getting back to me, this definitely fills in a number of blanks. What I need to find next is source citations and to find these sources so I can add the information to my family tree database. I'd also like to see what I can find on John MacPherson to see if I can find his ancestry.
What I know, beginning with Miriam MacPherson, is that she married Rev. Lewis Cheeseman and they had five children. The following is a register report with sources:
(1) Rev. Lewis Cheeseman[1],[2],[3]
& Miriam McPherson[4],[5]
(2) Dr. Andrew Cheesman[4] (ca1826 - )
bd. ca 1826[6]
(2) Jane Helen Cheeseman[7],[8],[9] ( - 1865)
dd. 27 Jun 1865[8],[10]
& Dr. James Roseburgh Leaming[11],[12],[13],[8],[9] (1820 - 1892)
bd. 25 Feb 1820, Groveland, Livingston county, NY[11],[8]
dd. 5 Dec 1892, New York, NY
(3) Dr. Edward Leaming , M.D.[11],[14],[15],[9] (1861 - 1916)
bd. 1 Sep 1861, New York, NY[16],[17]
dd. 11 May 1916, New York, NY[16],[17]
& Lula Smith[11],[17] (1872 - 1926)
bd. 1872, (Lowell, MA)[17]
dd. 1926[17]
(2) Sarah P. Cheesman[4]
(2) Kate E. Cheesman[4]
(2) Miriam Cheesman[5] (1836 - 1836)
bd. 10 May 1836[5]
dd. 22 Nov 1836[5]

Notice that "Neddie," only child of Jane Helen Cheeseman and Dr. James Rosebrugh Leaming is apparently a nickname for Dr. Edward Leaming (my great-grandfather). In turn, one of my sources showed "Kate," younger daughter of Lewis and Miriam to be a nickname for the Catherine you have. Also, you see from the above report Jane Helen had, in addition to her brother Andrew, three sisters-Sarah, Kate (Catherine), and Miriam. I don't have much more than their names, but it may be enough to research them further. I have additional biographical information on Rev. Lewis Cheeseman (a Presbyterian minister in Philadelphia), his son-in-law Dr. James Rosebrugh Leaming (a surgeon in NYC) and grandson Dr. Edward Leaming (a physician in NYC), if it interests you. All are in my own direct line. Again, anything you can provide as to source citations would be extremely helpful. Thank you.
Jay

Hi Jay,
Here's what I have, hope it helps! I'd love to know what you can add to it.
My GGGGrandmother was Ann Macpherson, born In Alvie Parish, Inverness-shire, Scotland, in 1784 or 86, and emigrated to New York State aboard the brig Brandy Wine Miller which departed Glasgow for New York on Aug 9, 1803. On board were a number of other Scots, including Duncan Grant who became her husband Sept 9, 1809 (they soon moved to Livingston County). Ann was joining her father John in Albany. Since we have a couple of family letters from Scotland that refer to brothers, my best guess is that Ann was an illegitimate child, born to parents John Macpherson and Mary Macpherson, who later married other people and had families. Mary stayed in Alvie, Scotland.
In Ann's father's case, I believe he married Catherine (last name unknown), and had a son Andrew (b. 1805), and daughters Miriam, Catherine, Jane Ann, and Grace (b. 1808). They started out in Albany but by the 1840 census had moved to Schenectady. It seems John died before 1840. Catherine's will was probated 12 Jan 1850, and she left house & money to her sister Jane Shankland (1782 - 1867). There is also mention of an Aunt Nancy--no idea if this was a sister to Catherine or John.
No information on Andrew except that he's listed as residing at 130 Union St, Schenectady in 1841 and Galway, Saratoga NY in 1850.
Miriam married Lewis Cheeseman and moved to Philadelphia.
Children, as of Dec. 1867
a. Dau Catharine E. Cheeseman known as Kate; Living with Andrew in NJ
b. Dau Jane Helen, died 1865
Jane Helen you know perhaps is dead--she died two years last June, of Bright's disease of the kidneys--leaving one son Neddie now in his sixth year a bright boy--
c. Son Andrew. Andrew has given up the MD & gone into the Pottery business--making this white stone ware we use on tables at Trenton, NJ, a wealthy partner with him.
d. Sallie P., mar. Augustine Fish (d. betw 1870 and July 1873)
married wealthy & has a beautiful home, her husband (Dr. Fish) is a lovely man. She has no children. He died, she moved to CA.
Jane Ann, will probated Apr 1874, never married.
Nursed Mother, nursed Aunt Jane until her death, nursed Grace until her death, stayed in Schenectady (but was evicted from the house by her sister after Aunt Jane's death?). Her letters supply all these details.
Grace (b. 1808). Grace was buried on Christmas day 1862, d. of breast cancer
Catherine, (d bef 1874), married Samuel Taggart Wells, Princeton graduate who went to Iowa and in 1860 to Ventura County, Ca. He remarried after Catherine's death.
Children, as of Dec. 1867
a. Rosanna Wells (known as Rosa), married to Dr. James Graham Cooper & has a boy most a year old = born early 1867
b. Lizzie Wells Farish, Lizzie is teaching
c. Moses is a young man--gets in the express business at $100 per month,
d. Samuel (known as Jamie?) Wells did not like California, so came on to be educated here--4 years ago he entered Princeton College
Dr. James Graham Cooper was one of the country's first naturalists; he later became first president of the California Academy of Sciences, still a big deal in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. The Cooper hawk is named after him.
Their son Samuel Calvin Wells, born in Pittsburg, Pa. graduated Princeton in 1873; was Editor of the Philadelphia Press.

You mentioned "Miriam (Mary) McPherson of Schenectady, NY, my grandmother's half-sister." I'd be very interested to know more of her family connections. Miriam MacPherson and Rev. Lewis Cheesman are my 3rd great-grandparents. I have his ancestry back to George Chesman but not her's. Anything you can tell me would be a great help. Thanks in advance
Jay
