Here is a CHISMAN / RUMSEY family group. They were farmers in Lushill, in
the parish of Castle Eaton, in Pewsey and in Winterborne Bassett, all of
them in Wiltshire, England, in the 1800s. I hope that this posting will be
useful to some of you CHISMAN and RUMSEY genealogists.
James CHISMAN was baptized in East Knoyle, Wilts, in 1816. In 1843, in
West Knoyle church, Wilts, he married Ann RUMSEY of that parish. James
Chisman junior was a yeoman farmer of 520 acres in Lushill, near Castle
Eaton (census of 1851); in the census of 1861, James 42 was a farmer in
Pewsey, living with Annie 40 and Elizabeth 16; lastly, James was a farmer
of 1,103 acres in Winterborne Bassett (census of 1871), all in Wiltshire.
James was buried (m.i.) in Winterborne Bassett in 1876, aged 60; Ann, a
widow, was buried in St. Michaels church, Wilsford, Wilts, in 1883, aged
63. James junior and Ann had issue, including:
1. Elizabeth CHISMAN who was born in Lushill, Castle Eaton in 1844,
baptized in Castle Eaton in 1845. In 1869, in Pewsey, she married William
LAWRENCE, farmer of Sharcott, near Pewsey. William farmed 475 acres in
Sharcott, near Pewsey (census of 1871); and, later, 630 acres in Normanton,
in the parish of Wilsford (censuses of 1881, 1891 and 1901), both in
Wiltshire. Elizabeth was buried in Wilsford, Wilts, on July 26th., 1876,
aged 31; m.i. for William and Elizabeth in Wilsford churchyard. William
and Elizabeth had issue.
2. William Rumsey CHISMAN, who was born in Lushill, Castle Eaton in
1845, baptized privately in Castle Eaton in 1845. In St. Marys Church,
Ashbury, Berks, in 1874, he married Mary Ann LAWRENCE, who was a younger
sister of William Lawrence, above. William and Mary Ann farmed 720 acres in
Chaddleworth Farm, Woolley Park, Berks (censuses of 1881, 1891 and 1901).
In 1920, William, Mary and Evelyn lived in Bergen, Donnington Sq.,
Newbury, Berks. William died in 1923, in Wilton district, and Mary Ann in
1942 - both are buried with m.i. in Chaddleworth. William and Mary had
issue.
I would be delighted to correspond, and to share CHISMAN and RUMSEY family
history research notes, with any descendant or researcher of this family,
which is an ancestral family of mine.
Best wishes.
