Here is a CHISMAN / RUMSEY family of Wiltshire yeoman farmers.
James CHISMAN was bp. in East Knoyle, Wilts, in 1816. Ann RUMSEY was born
1820 and bp. in West Knoyle, Wilts, 1822. In 1843, in West Knoyle, Ann
married James CHISMAN, bachelor, of Castle Eaton, Wilts, yeoman. They
farmed 520 acres in Lushill near Castle Eaton (census of 1851); later, in
Manor Farm Pewsey; and lastly 1,103 acres in Winterborne Bassett (census of
1871), all in Wiltshire. James 60 was buried, with m.i., in Winterborne
Bassett churchyard, Wilts, in 1876. Ann died a widow in Normanton, Wilts,
aged 63, in 1883 and was buried in Wilsford. James and Ann had issue,
including:
a) Elizabeth CHISMAN, 1844 – 1876, born in Lushill, near Castle Eaton,
Wilts 1844, bp. Castle Eaton 1845. In 1869, in Pewsey, Wilts, she married
William LAWRENCE, farmer of Pewsey. William and Elizabeth farmed 475 acres
in Sharcott, near Pewsey (census of 1871); and, later, 630 acres in
Normanton, in the parish of Wilsford (censuses of 1881, 1891 and 1901), all
in Wiltshire. Elizabeth died in Wilsford, Wilts, in 1876, aged 31, and was
buried there. William and Elizabeth had issue.
b) William Rumsey CHISMAN, 1845 – >1901, born in Lushill, near Castle
Eaton, Wilts in 1845, bp. privately in Castle Eaton in 1845. In 1874, in
St. Mary’s Church, Ashbury, Berks, he married Mary Ann LAWRENCE, who was a
younger sister of William Lawrence. William and Mary Ann farmed 720 acres
in Chaddleworth Farm, Woolley Park, Berks (censuses of 1881 and 1901), and
had issue.
I would be delighted to correspond and to share family history notes with
any descendant or researcher of this family, which is an ancestral family of
mine.
Best wishes.
