I am seeking to make contact, and to share CHISMAN family history notes,
with any descendant or researcher of my cousin, James CHISMAN, who was last
noted, with his family, in the Portsmouth area of Hampshire, England.
James CHISMAN, was born in Stockton, Wilts, England, about Q3 of 1838. In
the 1871 census, James 32, unmarried, was a farmer of 950 acres in Fifield
Bavant, Wilts; in the 1881 census he was 42, head, unmarried, a retired
farmer living on Fifield Farm in Fifield Bavant, Wilts; in the 1891 census,
James was 52, single, lodging in Portsmouth, Hants. In Q1 1895, in
Hamstead, London (BMD ref. 1a 919), James married Isabel REDERMACHER, who
had been born about 1858 in London Fulham. James, Isabel and two children
were enumerated in the 1901 census in Portsmouth. James and Isabel had
issue:
1] Isabel CHISMAN, born in Portsmouth, about 1897; birth registered
in Portsea in Q1 of 1897 (BMD ref: 2b / 538);
2] John Raymond CHISMAN, born in Portsmouth, about 1899; birth
registered in Portsea Island in Q3 of 1899 (BMD ref: 2b / 513).

I would appreciate any assistance in tracking down my lateral, James
CHISMAN, after 1891.
James CHISMAN, son of James CHISMAN junior, yeoman, and Ann RUMSEY, was
born in Lushill, Castle Eaton, Wilts, 1846, baptized in Castle Eaton 1847.
In the 1871 census, James was visiting the family of Stiles JEFFREYS, a
retired draper, in Calne, Wilts; in the 1881 census he lived with his
farmer brother, William, in Chaddleworth Berks; in 1891, still single, he
was living on his own means with farmer cousin, Thomas CHISMAN and family in
Codford St. Mary, Wilts.

John CHISMAN, son of James CHISMAN senior and Martha SANGER, was baptized in
East Knoyle, Wilts, England, in 1811. In 1837, in St. Denys, Warminster,
Wilts (IGI submitted), John married Louisa KNIGHT, who had been born, about
1811, in Donhead St. Mary, Wilts (I.G.I. extracted). John and Louisa farmed
in Stockton, Wilts, and, from the late 1840s, in Codford St. Peter, Wilts.
John, aged 64, was buried in Codford St. Peter in 1875; Louisa was
enumerated for the 1881 census in the Codford St. Peter farm of her son,
William; she died, aged 75, in Q2 of 1886, in Warminster district (BMD ref:
5a / 91); John and Louisa had issue:
a) James CHISMAN, born in Stockton about Q3 of 1838. In the 1871

HARDING. In the 1871 census, Thomas 31 was a farmer of 640 acres in Codford
St. Mary, living with Eliza 29, but no children; in the 1881 census, Thomas
was 41, head, a retired farmer, living in Codford St. Mary, with Eliza 40,
but no children; in the 1891 census, they had cousin James CHISMAN living
with them, still no children; in the 1901 census, Thomas was a retired
farmer 61, living with Eliza 59 in Codford St. Peter. No known issue.
c) William CHISMAN, born in Stockton about Q3 of 1842; in th 1871
census, William 28 was a farmer of 450 acres, enumerated in the household of
his parents in Codford St. Peter; in the 1881 census, he was 38, head,
unmarried, a farmer of 1,100 acres in Slades Farm, on Green Road, in
Codford St. Peter, living with his mother, Louisa; in the 1891 census,
William 48, single, was a farmer in Slades Farm; in the 1901 census, still
farming at Codford St. Peter with no family. No known issue.
d) Louisa CHISMAN, born in Stockton about Q2 of 1846; Louisa 24,
unmarried, was living with her parents in Codford St. Peter for the 1871
census. In about 1876 / 77, Louisa married Joseph DEAN, farmer, who was
born in Imber, Wilts, about 1844; in the 1881 census, Louisa was head,
married, 35, farmer's wife of 1250 acres in Chitterne All Saints, living at
The Lodge on High Street, husband not present - Joseph DEAN, married, 37,
farmer, born in Imber, was a visitor in Wiveliscombe, Som.; in the 1891
census, Joseph 48 was farming in Chitterne, living with Louisa 47 and 3
sons; in the 1901 census, Joseph 58 and sons Edgar 22 and George 21 were
living on the farm in Chitterne - Louisa DEAN 54 was staying (visiting?)
in Kew with ?Maria K. DEAN 60, who was born about 1840 in Imber, Wilts,
(possibly sister in law); Joseph and Louisa had issue.
e) Elizabeth Ann Knight CHISMAN, bapt. in Codford St. Peter, 1850
(BT and BVRI-2 show her mother as Sarah). In Q2 of 1874, in Marylebone (BMD
ref. 1a 913), Elizabeth Anne K. CHISMAN married John STEVENS, who had been
born in East Knoyle, bapt. in West Knoyle on Nov. 16th., 1837 (BVRI-2), a
son of Thomas and Hannah STEVENS. John farmed in Chalke Pitt Farm, in
Broadchalke, Wilts, from about 1864; for years, he was churchwarden in
Broadchalke church; for the 1871 census, John 33, unmarried, was a farmer
there of 1300 acres. John senior was buried in Broadchalke on Oct. 30th.,
1922; Elizabeth was buried there on January 11th., 1915; John and
Elizabeth had issue.
I seek to make contact with any relation or researcher of this family, all
cousins of mine, and to exchange family history notes.

William Rumsey CHISMAN was born in Lushill, Castle Eaton, Wilts, England, in
1845, baptized privately in Castle Eaton 1845. In the 1871 census, William
R. 24 was living with his parents in Winterborne Bassett, Wilts. In St.
Mary's Church, Ashbury, Berks, civil marriage registered in Q3 of 1874, in
Faringdon district, he married Mary Ann LAWRENCE. Mary Ann was born in
Idstone, Berks, in 1849. William and Mary Ann farmed 720 acres in
Chaddleworth Farm, Woolley Park, Berks (censuses of 1881, 1891 and 1901).
In 1920, William, Mary and daughter, Evelyn, lived in "Bergen", Donnington
Sq., Newbury, Berks; William died on June 5th., 1923 and Mary Ann on May
24th., 1942 - both are buried with m.i. in Chaddleworth. William and Mary
had issue:
1] Ernest William CHISMAN, born in Chaddleworth, Berks, 1875, baptized
there 1875. Ernest 25 was a farmer's assistant, living with his parents in
the 1901 census. In 1901, in Chaddleworth, Ernest 25, a farmer of
Chaddleworth, married Marion HEWER, 25 spinster of Banbury, in the presence
of Wm. Frederick HEWER, Elizabeth HEWER and Wm. R. CHISMAN. Mae was a
daughter of Thomas HEWER, farmer; Ernest farmed at New Lodge Farm, Windsor.
In 1956, Ernest, a widower, was living with son, Arthur, in New Lodge Farm.
Ernest and Mae had one son, Arthur.
2] Harry CHISMAN, born c. 1878 in Woolley, Chaddleworth. Harry served
in the 10th Bn., Imperial Yeomanry, in the Second Boer War (1899 - 1902);
Harry, a corporal in the Berkshire Imperial Yeomanry in World War I, was
killed in action at Suvla Bay, Turkey, in 1915, age 36 - he was buried in
Gallipoli, Turkey. No known issue.
3] Doreen Mary CHISMAN, born c. 1880 in Chaddleworth; Doreen, aged
15, died in 1895.
4] Rupert James CHISMAN, born 1882, in Chaddleworth, Berks, baptized
there 1882. For the 1901 census Rupert 18 was a "pupil in miller", boarding
in Chamberhouse Mill, Thatcham, Berks. Rupert migrated to Canada in 1911
and homesteaded in Cereal, Alberta. Later, in Alberta, he married Ellen
TANNER, who traveled out from England; they farmed in Cereal and, in July
1933, moved to Gunn, Alberta; Rupert died 1934 and is buried in Beechmont
Cemetery in Edmonton, Alberta. Rupert and Ellen had issue.
5] Evelyn Bessie CHISMAN, born in Chaddleworth, Berks, 1883, and
baptized there 1884. In 1920 she lived with her parents at "Bergen" in
Newbury, Berks. By 1956, she had inherited "Bergen", where she was living;
Evelyn died 1963. No known issue.
6] Rumsey CHISMAN; born 1889 and died in 1889, age 0, death
registered in Wantage district.
