Hi Folks,
Greetings from Toronto, Canada.
I would just love to contact, and to share detailed STEVENS and / or CHISMAN
family history notes, with any descendant or researcher of John STEVENS
(1837 - 1922), who married my cousin, Elizabeth Ann Knight CHISMAN (1850 -
1915). John and Elizabeth farmed in Broadchalke, Wilts, England.
John STEVENS had been born in East Knoyle, bapt. in West Knoyle on Nov.
16th., 1837, a son of Thomas and Hannah Stevens. Elizabeth Ann Knight
CHISMAN, bapt. in Codford St. Peter, 1850. In 1874, in Marylebone,
Elizabeth Anne K. CHISMAN married John STEVENS. John farmed in Chalke Pitt
Farm, in Broadchalke, Wilts, from about 1864. For years, he was
churchwarden in Broadchalke church. For the 1871 census, John 33,
unmarried, was a farmer there of 1300 acres; John 43 and Bessie 30 with
John junior 6 and Ethel 4, were there for the census of 1881, where John was
described as a farmer of 2,200 acres, employing 36 men and 6 boys; in the
1891 census John 53 was a farmer in Chalk Pitt Farm House, living with
Bessie 40 and Ethel 14; at the 1901 census, John 63 was a farmer in Chalk
Pit Farm, living with Bessie 50 and Ethel 24. John senior was buried in
Broadchalke on Oct. 30th., 1922; Elizabeth was buried there on January
11th., 1915. John and Bessie had issue:
1] John Elgar STEVENS, who was bapt. in Broadchalke 1875; last
enumerated in 1881, aged 6; cannot find in 1891 or 1901 censuses - he is
reported to have died, unmarried, aged 48, in Woking in 1923.
2] Ethel Louisa STEVENS, who was bapt. in Broadchalke 1876. In
1914, in Poplar district, she married Major Thomas Kilvington JEANS. Thomas
and Ethel took over Chalk Pyt Farm, in Broadchalke from John STEVENS senior,
when the latter retired from farming. Major T. K. JEANS MC 85 was buried in
Broadchalke on June 9th., 1962; Ethel was buried in Broadchalke on Feb.
21st., 1959. Thomas and Ethel had issue.
Best wishes.
Peter Ferreira
