Hi all:
Michael has suggested that I put the this family on the Roll Call -
they're not mine, but I do have the following details.....
On the 1881 census in Benover, Yalding:
William Cheeseman Age 33 Age Lab, born Yalding
Emma Age 32 Wife, born Yalding
Edwin W. Age 12
Horace Age 11
Lilly Age 7
Clara Age 5
Frank Age 2
All children born in Yalding.
Linda, Canada.
Hi John:
I was intending to write concerning the Roll Call when up popped your
message. I've only just started on my CHEESEMAN's - Clara is my
maternal grandmother and I'm 99.9% this is her family in 1881, living in
Ash:
Thomas W. (William) 37 Born Denton Ag Lab
Elizabeth 39 Born East Langton
William G. 14 Born Nonnington Ag Lab
Eliza 13 Born Whitfield
John E. 11 Born Waldershare
Louisa 8 Ditto
Thomas G. 6 Born Eythorne
Clara (my grandma) 4 Ditto
Alice 2 Born Ash
George 7 mths Ditto
On Clara's marriage cert. her father is shown as William. There are
some similarities here re the names, maybe there is a connection
somewhere. Everything fits here for my family, but I think the only way
I can be really sure is wait for the 1901 census so I can see Clara and
her husband together to get the place of birth.
I also have another William CHEESEMAN family from the 1881 census living
in Yalding with names like Edwin, Horace, Lilly and Frank. These are not
mine, but could be a connection to yours?
Linda.
Hi everybody!
This is for the Roll Call
I am John Jenner the great Grandson of Elizabeth Cheeseman who married my greatgrandfather, Ernest John Jenner (of Cranbrook, Kent) on 30th November 1897 in Sheerness before they both embarked for Hong Kong where my great grandfather took up a posting as a sergeant in the Hong Kong and Singapore Battalion. Ernest John died in Hong Kong on 26th October1900 just 9 months after my grandfather was born.
Elizabeth Cheeseman was born 19th September 1870 in Lattingsford Street, Yalding, Kent. She was the third child of William Thomas Cheeseman and Mary Skinner. Williams second name "Thomas" only appears once in the records, on Elizabeth's registry of birth. Elizabeth had two elder sisters Millicent (b. 1866) and Louisa (b.1868), a younger brother Henry (b.1875) and a younger sister Agnes (b.1878).
William Thomas was also born in Yalding in 1836, the third child of Henry Cheeseman and Elizabeth. He had two elder brothers, Henry (b.1826) and Thomas (b.1833) and one younger sister Elizabeth (b.1839).
This is as far as I can go with my family so far - so I am sorry Micheal I cannot give link to your family at present. I am interested in hearing from anyone who thinks they may be descended from any of the above.
I also have a number of spurious entries in the census returns for the yalding and Crabrook areas of Kent in the name of Cheeseman which I will post as soon as I can gather them all together.
Regards,
John Jenner
For the Rollcall:
My Cheeseman interests are in Marden, Kent (mid 1700s to 1800s) and Sutton
Valence, Kent (early 1800s to late 1800s).
Carol Cheeseman
Greetings list
For those of you on other lists you will
be aware of what a rollcall is.
For those who do not, it is a posting by
each member of their family interests.
>From this we can gain an understanding of
each others research line and where we
would like to progress.
I am now managing a number of lists and will
be requesting rollcalls on all bar the Chant
family list. The Chant list is rapidly growing
and is doing very well with numerious connections
being made between a number of families in
Dorset, Wiltshire and Somersetshire whose
descendants moved all over the world just
like the Chees(e)man's.
I would also like members to contact any Chees(e)man
researchers they know and invite them to join.
It can be a fun experience. The sharing of info
often providing that vital clue to progress
research further or establish that someone is
actually a distant cousin.
I wish you all well and Happy Hunting.
regards
Michael Cheeseman

Hi SGC
I have no idea where my William Cheeseman was from.
Though a bricklayer by occupation on his son's
second? married in 1878.
William's son Edward Frederick Cheeseman was born circa
1836 as a guess based on age on his death certificate
in 1881. Edward a Widower married Catherine Brown
in 1878. Having a daughter soon afterwards named Catherine Eliza Francis
Cheeseman. Both Catherine Cheeseman Widow and her daughter Catherine E.F.
Cheeseman were listed under Charman in 1881 Census.
Edward was in Bramley Rd, Notting Hill, Kensington London
when he married and died. He died in January 1881.
My great grandfather was born in September 1881 also
named Edward Frederick. He never knew his dead father
or much about him as far as I know.
The only other William Cheeseman family I found was that
of William Cheeseman a Captain in the Army a few blocks
away in Kensington listed in the 1861 Census.
I found a lady here in WA who new her ancestors name
and army details but not where he was so. She now
knows were her William Cheeseman's details. Funnily
enough this William was married to woman who was born
in Western Australia in about 1841. The colony was
only 12 years old.
There is a bricklayer Cheeseman family in, I think
it's called Tonbridge Kent which looks promising
but I have been informed of yet others in Surrey/Sussex.
My grandfather before his death in 1990 told family
often that his father knew of Cheeseman relatives
in England. We don't know who but since both Edward and Catherine came to
Western Australia with a new stepfather
in 1887. I can only assume Edward son of William had
children by an earlier marriage or the reference was
to his uncles - cousins Cheeseman families.

Michael, so you want postings???
Here attached is one I sent personally and of course can be listed on the
board.
Since you do not state from where he originated or where he lived when a
bricklayer.............I'm not sure.
Lying on the floor next to my computer I see a page from my genealogy which
states:
William Cheesman, son of Stephen C. and Ann Gray

1841 census.
William lived with his wife, Alfred, Charlotte, Thomas in Bosley's House,

Does this help or connect?

My ancestor William Cheeseman b circa 1780-1810
a Bricklayer.
His son Edward Frederick born circa 1836
a Gasfitter had married before children ?
Was a widower when he married again in
Kensington London in 1878.
>From this marriage childred Catherine Eliza
Francis cheeseman b 1878 and Edward Frederick
Cheeseman b 1881.
Does any of this sound familiar to anyone
regards
Michael Cheeseman
Cheeseman was often mispelled. Especially due to poor literacy and at times
a hard to understand accent.
In the 1881 Census my great great grandmother
Catherine Cheeseman was listed under Charman and
took a while to find. Her occupation Charwoman.
If you are following Cheeseman/Cheseman/Cheesman etc
in the U.K. than that's what this list is all about.
Any takers for posting your interests?

I have a line in Kent that at various times is shown as

I have this family, whatever the spelling, in Rolvenden and Benenden mostly.
