An update -- DNA testing using the tests out at www.gedmatch.com show a small amount of Native American blood and African-American blood. However, at this point I cannot narrow it down completely to just the Cheek line in my family. The two most likely lines for both the Native American and the African American are the George W. Cheek of Front Royal, VA line and/or John Lewis Caudle (most likely origin is Tennessee for his wife, possibly one of the Carolinas and/or Kentucky for John). Dark skin has been reported in both lines. The next most likely line in my family tree would that of Indiana Deal/Diehl who married a David Shook. The reason for this being the lack of any information on the ancestry of Idiana Deal/Diehl whose more or less appeared out of the blue in Indiana and lived in a part of Ripley County or surrounding area that some have reported as being known as an area where half-breeds lived.
It is not a large percentage, varies according to the exact test between 1/2% to 2% for the Native American, and a similar amount for the African-American.
Although not impossible to rule out, the information I have makes it unlikely that the Native American and the African American came from other than the above lines.
Unfortunately, unless further information shows up, I can't narrow it down any better than this right now. It is almost impossible, unless there are unusual genes involved, to narrow down Native American blood to one tribe or another. There are two reasons for this: 1. Many Native Americans refuse to submit DNA for testing, for a variety of reasons, and 2. Much of the Native American DNA has become mixed with Western European DNA in the U.S. due to intermarriage. This is especially true for tribes of the Eastern U.S.
The African American DNA appears to come from the part of the Slave Coast of Africa, in my case the area involving and surrounding Cameroon/sub-Saharan Africa.
Scott
