There seems to be some confusion about two James Cheeks in Virginia. One James Cheek born of George Cheek & Leanna, the other James Cheek born of Richard Cheek, both with the same birthdate.
I came across this out at Heritage Quest. From the information in this we find out that this James Cheek of Frederick County was born about 1759.
The James Chick born King and Queen County, VA was born about 1760 (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kyknox/Pensions/Chick-James/Chick-James...) so it appears that we have two James Cheek/Chick who were actually born quite close together in time.
Anyway, from the pension application for the James Cheek of Frederick County, VA.
State of Virginia
Frederick County ???
On this 20 day of September 1834 personally appeared before me S. (Blackburn??? Blakemann???) a Justice of the peace in and for said County of Frederick and state of Virginia James Cheek a resident of said County and State aged Seventy Five years, who being first duly sworn, according to Law (doth???) on his Oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June the 7th 1832.
Thant he this said James Cheek entered the Service under Capt. Francis Berry who marched a company of drafted militia from the County of Frederick in the State of Virginia in the month of April in the year 1781. Said company joined the Regiment at Fredericksburg in Virginia, ??? at Fredericksburg Station sometime, the remainder of said tour was served in the vicinity of Richmond and Williamsburg in Virginia. This tour was for three months that after the ??? of this aforesaid tour, he was drafted for three months and stationed at Winchester in Virginia under Capt. ??? (perhaps Grim?), whose company was stationed at Winchester ???, and whose duty was to guard prisoners then at Winchester barracks, served out said tour and was discharged in the early part of the year 1782, there was a requisition or call for five hundred volunteers, to server a tour of three months, that he volunteered in said tour, marched to the South Branch of the Potomac River in the State of Virginia, re!
mained in said service five weeks and was discharged, the 1st - 2nd & 3rd tours ??? amounted to seven months actual services.
He hereby relinquishes every claim whatsoever to a pension, or annuity, except the present, and declares that his name is not on the Pension Roll of the agency of any state.
James Cheek his X mark
Worn to and Subscribed this day and year aforesaid, I do ??? certify that the said James Cheek resides upwards of (Twenty???) miles from the Court House of Frederick County in the State of Virginia, and from old age and infirmity the said James Cheek is unable to attend at said Court House without considerable inconvenience to himself, I further certify that the said James Cheek is a man of Truth and intellect to ??? (confidence???)
Given under my hand and seal this 20 day September 1835.

Thank you very much and I would like to see the documentation. My great-great grandmother was ELIZABETH VANN MCMILLIAN (1818-1891), daughter of JOHN BROWN MCMILLIAN and MARTHA CHEEK. When Martha died in 1926, Elizabeth was reared in the Vann House on the Vann plantation in Chatsworth, GA--although I can find no official verification of this. I believe that she was sent to the house because she was both Cheek and Vann, but I have not been able to prove this. The story handed down in our family was that Elizabeth eloped with her first husband, William Roberts. She later married my ancestor, Robert Spencer Carr, at the Vann House in 1949, after the Vann family was gone. I've talked to people at the Vann House and there is no evidence that my Elizabeth was there--although I can see on the Vann genealogies that were was an Elizabeth Vann sometime before my relative was born. I believe now that I need to focus on the Cheek side. Any leads on where to look would be most w!
elcome!
