There have been some stories among some descendants of George Cheek and Leanna of Front Royal, VA of Native American blood. Most often these stories speak of a Cherokee heritage.
We'll probably never be able to prove it one way or another. However, we can probably rule out Cherokee, as the area of Shenandoah valley around Winchester, VA was Shawnee territory.
Many maps today that mark out Indian territories do not distinguish between hunting territories which were often shared with neighbors and allies, and those territories that were where the tribes actually lived.
With this in mind, I started looking around and found this, "Prior to 1754, the Shawnee had a headquarters at Shawnee Springs at modern-day Cross Junction, Virginia near Winchester. The father of the later chief Cornstalk held his court there. Two other Shawnee villages existed in the Shenandoah Valley: one at Moorefield, West Virginia, and one on the North River. In 1753, Shawnee to the west sent messengers inviting the Virginia people to leave the Shenandoah Valley and cross the Alleghenies. The Virginia Shawnee migrated west the following year,[15][16] joining Shawnee on the Scioto River in the Ohio country."

Both George Cheek of Front Royal and Leanna had been born by this time.
The Shawnee tended to be more nomadic than many of the Native American tribes. The Shawnee had close ties with the Cherokee at one point in time and at least one group of Shawnee was considered to be part of the Cherokee Nation by the U.S. Government, which would explain the claims of Cherokee bloodline in some of the Front Royal, VA, Cheeks.
Anyway, I hope someone finds this information of some use.

Please, someone help me find my gr-gr-gr grandmother, America Cheek, born about 1802/05 in TN. Her parents were Isaac Cheek and Sarah Anderson. She was married to a William Horton, who later died and she remarried a Jesse Helton, they had one daughter, Nancy Helton. From my records America stayed in TN all her life. I know of several people who claim to have her roll number but they never get back with me to give me the number or tell me which book to look in. Please someone, please help me. Thank you so much.
