My g-g-grandmother was Eddie Veernie Bea Cathreine Cheek born abt. 1859 in Georgia or N. Carolina. She died in 1936 in Alabama and is buried at Old Mt. Carmel Church Cemetery. She married Francis Marion Holland who went by Frank. He is buried in the same cemetery. I have always been told she was Cherokee but have no proof. I found a Catherine Cheek on the 1817 Cherokee roll. I don't know who her parents were, but I wonder if maybe this is a grandmother since the name is Catherine and she went by Catherine most of the time. Any information would be appreciated. My e-mail is purplenurses(a)yahoo.com. Thanks.

There is a story in my family that George Cheek was Native American. It does not seem likely that he was Native American, or at least not full-blooded Native American. It seems to me more likely that his wife, Leanna would have been the Native American. There are also a few other stories of Native American heritage among some of the descendants of George Cheek and Leanna
Some years back I corresponded with a descendant of George Cheek and Leah (or Leanna/Leah Anna) who told me that she had been told that Leanna was Native American.
I am wondering, if she was Native American, if she might not have been Shawnee. "Prior to 1752, they had a headquarters at Shawnee Springs near Winchester, Virginia" (http://www.zaneshawneecaverns.net/The_Shawnee_Nation.pdf)
Winchester, VA and Front Royal, VA are very close together, distance-wise. Front Royal is 20 miles south of Winchester. Front Royal at that time was known as Lehewtown, aka "Hell town", because it was so wild. It became Front Royal in 1788. It was the kind of area at that time where a European man might take a Native American wife. Women would have been in short supply in frontier areas, which this was at that time.
Any thoughts?
Scott
