Inconsistencies in the offspring of George Cheek of Front Royal, VA in the various genealogies available.
Hope this doesn't come out too chopped up.
It looks like there are two Cheek families that have gotten mixed together. Way too many differences to just be explained by researcher error or transcription errors.
Below is basic info --
James Cheek
b. 17 May 1760 Winchester, VA; d. 1829; or b. 1737 or b. 1747;
d. 1829 or d. Nov 1845 in Front Royal or Rappahanock, VA;
corporal in Colonial Army in Rev. War
res. 1810 Front Royal, Frederick County, VA
had two wives, Katy unknown and Ruth Dawson.
Jason Cheek, son of James and Ruth, b. 1814 Indiana
*** looks like two different James Cheeks.
Which is son of our George Cheek? If his son, Jason Cheek,
was born in Indiana, then he came to Indiana and then
went back to VA?
Also, if born in 1760, would make him about 16 - 17 years
old during the Revolutionary War, which might make him a
little young to become a corporal.
George Cheek, Jr.
d. abt. 1874
3 wives, Anna Christina, Elizabeth Williams, Alta Adeline
Bailey
res. 1790 Lincoln Co., KY
Francis Cheek
b. abt 1764 or 1765or 1766;
d. 30 Sep 1824 in Culpeper, VA or Mar. 1826 in Dearborn Co.,
IN.
served under Capt. William Fields in Revolutionary War
3 wives, Mary Kiggins, Mary Vinson, Mary Ann Cordry
Nancy Cheek listed as daughter of both Mary Vinson and Mary
Ann Cordry. Nancy Cheek b. 20 Oct 1789 near Aurora, IN for
Mary Vinsona or 20 Oct 1789 in Kentucky for Mary Ann Cordry;
and she died 9 Dec 1868 near Aurora, IN for both mothers.
res. 1790 Lincoln Co., KY
*** If he served in Revolutionary War, unlikely he was born
1765 or 1766 as he would only be about 10 years old and
too young to serve. Also died in two different places
at two different times???
*** Appears to be two different Francis Cheeks. But according
to one source he was in Kentucky, which matches
with a birth date place for his daughter Nancy Cheek.
And another source has Nancy being born in Indiana in
1789 which is about 5 years before the earliest Cheeks
settled in Indiana.
Nicholas Cheek
b. 1754 or b. abt. 1769 in Winchester, VA;
d. 1856 Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co., IN
*** Nicholas is a common name among some groups of Cheeks.
If b. 1754 he would have been 102 when he died.
Possible researcher error here, 1754 and 1769 can look
the same in the old handwriting of the time.
Mary (Polly) Cheek
b. abt. 1770; m. William Williams
Nancy Cheek
b. 1753 or b. abt. 1775 in Virginia or abt. 1777 in
Frederick, VA;
res. 1810 Woodford County, KY;
d. 24 May 1833 Dearborn County, Kentucky
First child Elizabeth b. Fayette County, KY. 2nd child just
born Kentucky, next three or so b. Woodford County, KY and
last few children b. Dearborn Co., IN
*** there appears to be two Nancy Cheeks. There is a record of
a Nancy Cheek in the general area of Front Royal, VA
and appears to be associated with a Judith Cheek on
one record, but she is too old to be the Nancy Cheek
that married Eli Green, so she must be the 1753 Nancy
Cheek.
William Cheek
b. 1752 or b. abt. 1777; d. 1767
res. 1803 Dearborn Co., IN
res. 1812 Randolph Co., IL
*** Must be at least two William Cheeks, as it is a little
difficult for most mortals to die the year before
they are born. Also death date is before he moved
to IN, although possible that is a typo by original
researcher.
Nelly Cheek
b. 1752 or b. 1771 or b. abt. 1778
m. Thomas Dawson who was b. 1745 & d. 1771
*** must be two Nelly Cheeks, otherwise she is getting
married either at age 1 or 7 years after her husband
died.
Tavner Cheek
b. 1780 or b. 1790/91 in VA; d. 18 May 1864
also b. Jun 10, 1809 and d. Aug 5 1810;
res. 1807 Dearborn Co., IN
res. 1850 and 1860 Lawrenceburg, Dearborn, IN
Two wives, one unknown, the other Elizabeth Dawson, who was
b. 1792 in Kentucky.
first child by Elizabeth, Page Cheek, b. 1806 in IN when
mother was 14 years old???
*** Must be two Tavners, but perhaps the short-lived one
was Page Cheeks son, Tavner?
Machir Cheek
b. 1752 or b. 1782; d. 1774
res. 1812 Randolph Co., IL
*** must be two of these guys, otherwise neat trick being
b. 8 years after dying. Possible typo in birthdate
by original researcher, handwritten 5's and 8's can
look similar
Page Cheek
b. 14 Feb. 1784 Winchester Co., VA or b. 30 Jul 1784 in VA;
d. 7 May 1833 Dearborn County, IN
One possible arrangement of the two different Cheek families.
James 1747
George, Jr. ????
Nancy 1753
William 1752
Nelly 1752
Machir 1752
and
James 1760
George, Jr. ????
Francis 1765
Nicholas 1769
Mary (Polly) 1770
Nancy 1775
