I've hit a dead end with my ancestor Milton L. Cheek 1872-1936. His name is sometimes misspelled as Wilton or his middle name Luttie (possibly Luther)has been used. His Wife Naomi or Naomia Dudley is also a stop in my tree. They lived in Georgia their whole lives in the counties Elbert, Madison, and Clarke. Children were Wilburn, Essie, John, Humphrey, Grady, Horace, Cleo, Martin, Mary and Javier. Any help would be appreciated.

Please disregard my statement that Leah McKay's father was James Cheek. I misread something I found and thought that Leah had a first marriage to someone named McKay. After going back to it, I realized that her father's name was James McKay and her mother's name was Mary Cheek.
Apologies.

To search specific censuses, click the Search button at the top of the ancestry.com home page.
Then, on the right hand side in the Browse Records box, you will see a listing that says "Historical Records", and under this "Census and Voter Records".
Under "Census and Voter Records" is a link "US Federal Census".
At the bottom of the page it lists individual census years that you can click on to search.
This makes it much easier to control just how much information you get when you search.
Hope this helps.

Forgot to mention I found Rachel Cheek living with a Milton Cheek/Check if I remember in the 1860 census for Hartwell in Hart County, GA. Appears she may be his daughter. Interestingly enough, Milton Cheek appears to have a son named John M.D. Cheek, who is 1 year old in 1860.
Milton M. D. Cheek and John M. D. Cheek are apparently brothers and their father apparently is Rowland Cheek, also living in Hartwell, Hart County, GA, right next to Milton Cheek.
You need to search under the name "Check". When you view the original census documents you'll see that the name is "Cheek" and not "Check". Or at least that is how it appears to me.
I hope this helps. Sometimes people aren't home when the census is taken and then years late they are old enough to leave home and they do before the next census is taken, and they don't show up on any census forms. Which is frustrating.
Hope all of this is of some use to you.

Scott,
I tried the ancestry's new and improved search engine but to no avail. It was suppose to search all records. I tried John Holland, too and received many hits but none with Edwiney B. as his wife. I tried Edwina as a more formal spelling of her name as well as EB only. If I knew the name of her children or any other kind of special info that might would give me a few hits. I don't know how to search specific states for information. Her family (my great grandfather lived mostly in Ga but they also lived in Al and Fla at times. I don't know when or where she got married and have not been able to find out anything. If I just knew more about John Holland that too would be helpful. I talked to both of my aunts who are in their 80s but they said they had forgotten about her being their grandfather's sister and did not know much about her because they were "younguns" and that did not interest them when their aunt talked about the family.
So I am kind of in limbo until I do the search using the variations of the Cheek spelling.
I do appreciate your kindness in helping me. I will let you know if I find anything. Are you a Cheek or related to a Cheek?
Erlinda

Hi Erlinda,
Neither census mentions the relationships between the people in the household. I had just assumed that they were all immediate family and that either Jackson and Rachel were twins, or that they were born less than 12 months apart in the same year. A conclusion on my part that I now see may have been erroneous.
Apparently whomever was transcribing the census records misread the name "Cheek" as "Check" (something that is somewhat common, unfortunately). So if you search on the name "Jackson Check" you will come across them in the 1870 census for Shoal Creek, Hart County, GA.
Let me know if this works for you.
Other alternate spellings for Cheek that were sometimes used back then are Cheeke, Cheke, Chick, Cheak, and so on. It pays to sometimes search using this alternate names. Makes for more work, but sometimes the results are well worth the effort.
Have you tried getting a copy of the marriage records for Edwiney B.?

Scott,
Thank you for your reply. I had seen that information also. I just can't remember which census it was. If you remember which census it was does it say what Rachel's relationship was to John M.D. Cheek, if he was the head of the house? If it was on a census with Jackson Dooley as the head of the house does it say she is the sister to Jackson? I thought I remembered something about her being a niece of John MD Cheek. Could you tell me which census that information was on/
My aunt, whose grandfather was Jackson Dooley, said she was Jackson's sister and her name was Edwiney B., but the family called her Great Aunt Sis. I have a picture of her, her husband, and their children but that is basically all I know about them. I just find it curious there is no record of her on any census. I thought since I am an unexperienced beginner in researching that maybe a more experienced researcher could help me.
I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. I had not thought of Rachel being the sister to Jackson. Could very well be a possibility.
Thank you again for the help,
Erlinda

found a John Cheek, age 45, married to a Vilot Cheek, age 51, with a son Jackson Cheek, age 12, and a daughter Rachel Cheek, age 12 in the 1870 U.S. Census for Shoal Creek, Hart County, Georgia. All listed as being born in Georgia.
Found John M.D. Cheek, age 35, married to a Violet M. Cheek, age 46(?), with children Benjamin H. age 12 and Jackson, age 3, all born in Georgia in the 1860 U.S. Census for Dooleys in Hart County, Georgia.
They appear to be the same family. Ages appear to be somewhat unreliable. Age for Violet in the 1860 census is difficult to read and is questionable.
If I may suggest, how definite are you that her middle initial is "B"? could it be an "R" for Rachel, instead? Sometimes people preferred to go by a middle name and as their middle name is part of their legal name, they can legally do that without having to go through any legal processes.
Hope this helps.

Good Morning Logan,
I am not a Cheek descendent.
However I have a few married in here and there.
Is there a way I can check to make sure that
the few I have are correct with their information ?
Thanks,
