TURIN, Italy - Joey Cheek, Lindsey Kildow and the
members of the American snowboarding team were
selected Monday as the winners of the U.S. Olympic
Spirit award.
The winners were picked by American fans, fellow Team
USA athletes, U.S. alumni Olympians and members of the
media for best representing the Olympic Spirit during
the 2006 Winter Games.
Cheek won in the men's category after winning a gold
and silver in speedskating. More impressively, Cheek
donated his $40,000 in performance earnings to Right
to Play. His generosity inspired others to contribute
thousands of dollars to the organization. As result,
he was elected by his peers to carry the American flag
during the closing ceremony.
Kildow is the first woman to win the individual U.S.
Olympic Spirit Award while not winning an Olympic
medal. Despite being hospitalized after a spectacular
training run accident on the second day of downhill
practice, Kildow returned to the slopes to compete the
next day, finishing eighth.
Still struggling with her injuries, she competed in
four of her five events. The snowboarding team won its
honor after picking up seven Olympic medals. The
winners will be honored at a U.S. Olympic team
celebration dinner on May 16 in Washington D.C. DHL
sponsored the award.

United States Olympic Committee - Cheek, Joey
http://www.usolympicteam.com/26_713.htm
Check this out ... the Official U.S. Olympic Committee website lists Joey
Cheek in "The Cheek Family Chronicles" .... under the "Did You Know" section as
follows:
Did You Know?
Claims he was 'a huge geek' in junior and senior high school, tells blogger
Andrew Love that "I would probably have been chosen in school as least likely
to participate in a sporting event."
Listed in the "Cheek Family Chronicles," a 700-year history of famous Cheeks
of America, England and Australia
Cheeks didn't start focusing on the sprint races until he missed making the
U.S. World Cup team in 2000 and entered the U.S. sprint trials for fun.
He made the U.S. sprint team in his first attempt and competed at the 2000
World Sprint Championships. Cheek placed 18th overall, which catapulted him to
becoming a full-time member of the World Cup team in 2000-2001.
Like many other skaters, Cheek considers his parents to be the strongest
influence on his career. They taught him a person can decide his or her own fate
and by never giving up there is nothing that cannot be accomplished.
In his spare time, Cheek enjoys playing the guitar, producing movies with
fellow skaters, Kip and Cory Carpenter, and online investing.
After skating is over, he would like to attend law school and begin a
successful law practice in his native North Carolina.
Some of his favorites: favorite book is "Enders Game" by Orson Scott Card;
favorite band is The Dave Matthews Band; favorite food is blueberry pancakes;
favorite move is self-produced "Spider Fang."
Cheek broke two American records at the 2002 U.S. Olympic Trials in December,
in the 1000-meters (1:07.98) and 500-meters (34.66), eclipsing marks set by
Casey FitzRandolph earlier in the month at the Utah Olympic Oval.
Builds potato guns, including one that can shoot a potato 275 yards.

I am so happy to finally have contact with a descendant of Josephus Evans! We have always assumed that Josephus was related to our Moses in some way, but had no way of knowing just how.
Josephus was listed in the 1850 census in Franklin Parish, LA, just a few pages over from Moses.
Josephus age 23, wife Artamissa age 23, son Josephus age 6 and son David age 2 are listed on Series M432, Roll 231, Page 291. (Son Henry was on the next census in 1860 at about age 3, 5 or 8...can't make it out. William is 5 mos old.) I can check better on this for you. Do you have access to the census online? If not, I can send you a copy via emai.
Is David Evans of Rankin Co MS father of Moses and grandfather of Josephus? There is an 1846 wil in Rankin Co., MS wherein this David Evans lists his wife Mary, children, Henry, Jefe,(letter s was written like f, so this is actually Jese.), David, Moses, Catherine, John, Joab and William. I am thinking he was Moses, Sr.'s father. The 1855 will of Moses Sr.'s stated that David Evans, his "whole brother" would be executor. Do you have any further information about this David Evans? I see that Josephus named a son David.
Would you happen to know of any bible records?
Please email me at DDavis77060(a)houston.rr.com and let's see if we can piece this Evans line together. I have been at a brick wall with Moses, Sr. for so long.
Doris
Does anyone have any information on Any Cheek's That lived in Hart, Georgia

One of Moses Evans Sr.'s son that the 1850 census missed was my g'g'g grandfather, Josephus Evans. He was born in Copiah Cty., MS, in 1827, and he apparently was married and living elsewhere by 1850. My g'g'grandfather, Henry Evans was his first son. William, David, and Josephus (Jr.) were all born to Josephus and his first wife, Artimizza Brooks. I was thinking that the 'brothers' also could have been uncle and nephew, or some such.
Jim,
It doesn't check out with my records.
Henry Cheek was born May 22, 1769. Jane ("Jenny") Hancock was born
February 28, 1778. Your Nancy b. 1760 would have came before both of
them. Henry and Jenny did have a Nancy, but she was born in Columbia,
Adair County, Kentucky on September 17, 1811 and died there July 22,
1831. She was unmarried. The date of death makes me suspect she may
have been a victim of the "Great Cholera Epidemic."
Henry and Jenny's other children were: Thomas, William, Henry,
Elizabeth Lindal, Pamelia, James Hill, George Hancock, Silas, Aaron,
Levi, John Lindal, and Mary Jane. Thomas was my g3 grandfather; James
Hill Cheek, MD was the father of Joel Owsley Cheek, the founder of
Maxwell House Coffee.

Richard is on target. Silas Cheek (b 1816, Columbia, Adair County, KY, d 1910, Havana, Mason County, Illinois) married Nancy Ingraham. He was the last surviving sibling of the many children of Henry and Jane "Jenny" Hancock Cheek. I have a photo of him, as well as numerous letters from him to my g2 grandfather, Rev. Samuel Best Cheek in the mid 1800s.Here is a newspaper item on him noting his wedding anniversary: An unidentified local newspaper reported the golden wedding anniversary of Silas Cheek and his wife; “The well and favorable known “Squire” Cheek of Havana (Illinois) and his faithful wife celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary yesterday. About 30 children and grandchildren attended, and all are proud of their sterling and honored ancestry. Silas Cheek is a Kentuckian by birth, and in Kentucky he married Miss Nancy Ingram. About ten years after this he moved to Illinois. He was a staunch friend of Abraham Lincoln, and a loyal Unionist. H!
e is now 76 years old, and enjoys, as does his wife, a hearthy health old age (sic). His name is known to many in this part of the state, and no where known without genuine respect.” He moved to Illinois in 1853, and was elected a town trustee of his community in 1855. He had ten children: Junius, Sarah Anita, Lois Cordelia, Marie Ellen, Belinda Porter, Nancy Jane, Issac Henry, George Hancock, William Samuel and Mary Elizabeth.

The following message was sent to Fox & Friends this AM:
Your spelling of Olympic gold medalist speed skater's name Joey Cheek in this morning's Fox and Friends sports coverage was incorrect: it is Cheek not Cheeks!
All of us in the Cheek family have to keep alert for insults like this. The name comes from Hugh-de-la-Cheke-on-the-Hill, one of William the Conqueror's knights. He got the name for his very large jaw.
The last I heard, the human anatomy includes only one jaw, not two. Yes, there are a couple of another anatomical areas of the human body that have two cheeks.
But that's not us.
Let's please get it correct next time when Joey wins his second gold medal.
