Cyril,
Don't know if any of this is relevant to your research but the surname CHICK
figures in 15 of the 68 volumes of the Hampshire Genealogical Society's
microfiche Index to the 1851 Census, principally in the Portsmouth area and
the IOW, and CHEEK in 1 (Portsea).
According to a correspondent "There has been a Cheke family on the Island
(Isle of Wight) since the time of Edward the second [1284-1327], but to my
knowledge the original Island family has failed except for one female line.
Our Cheek family appeared on the Island about 1780, along with about four
others, possibly related. Our common ancestor was Charles Cheek.... I have
been scouring the I.G.I. for the southern counties of the U.K., hoping to
trace the origins of Charles and what are probably his four brothers..."
(Letter, 95.04.20).
Elisabeth CHICK married John GAWN, Newchurch, Isle of Wight, in 1827. She
was the daughter of Charles Chick and Hannah BARTON, married Godshill, IOW,
1802. Charles Chick drowned at sea off the IOW ca 1815. I don't know who his
parents were. He is the Charles Cheek referred to in the previous paragraph.
Thomas Cheke was lord of Mottistone Manor, IOW, ca. 1324.
John Cheek married Jane Salter, Newport, IOW, 1810.
White's 1878 directory for Hampshire lists:
. Francis Cheek, wheelwright, Carisbrooke, IOW;
. John Cheek, baker, etc, East Cowes;
. James Cheek, farmer, Newport IOW;
. Alfred James Cheek, RN, Neville Lodge, Clarendon Road, Southsea.
Good hunting in 2005,
Peter Gawn (Canada).

Hello -- I have recently been researching the Cheek families of McClain,
Garvin and Le Flore Counties in Oklahoma (1900-1930 census, WWI Draft,
Marriage/Death records)..
Today I ran across an email posting (below) -- I think I can help this
person, but no email address or name was linked with the text for some reason.
If this is your Cheek group, then please email me at CheekChronicles(a)aol.com
Thanks, Jeff Williams (for info on this group, I have posted it to the
rootsweb.com site:
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=pilgrim2press )
The June 28, 2000 internet posting reads as follows: "Looking for
Relatives Anywhere -- (my) father Dellus Cheek, uncles Clyde Cheek, Taft Cheek (never
married), Allen Cheek, James "Jimmy" Cheek, aunts Issy Cheek (married name
not known), Velma Cheek Allingsworth, husband Oliver, Grandfather James Sullivan
Cheek, grandmother Mollie Johnson Cheek."
Hello folks,
Since the publication of "The Cheek Family Chronicles" in August 2004, I
have spent the last few months working on the census data (1850-1930) and
World War One Draft Registration Cards of the Cheek family based in Jonesville,
Lee County, Virginia (and their later move to the Greenville, Hunt County, Texas
area).
I have updated my Rootsweb site (see below for link) with this data over
the last few days. If any of you are interested in this group, perhaps you
can review what I've posted, and comment / improve upon it / add specifics which
I may be missing. I do not have the census data posted, but will be happy to
email any specific ones to anyone interested.
