Susan, we are definitely related! In 1982 my great aunt wrote and said that
my ggg grandfather, James A Cheek, had four children. One of them is my gg
grandfather, John Cheek, born 1845. She said he was 1/4 Cherokee Indian and
came from Carolina. (She later said in the same letter, "The Cheek children were
1/4 Cherokee Indians.") He died 15JUN1910. He married Susan Wheeler, born
1855 and died 17JAN1910. They are both buried in Hamilton County, in Sneed
Cemetery. The Wheelers are from Alabama and Wheeler Creek was named for them.
She mentioned, Priscilla, who married a Louis Elliston, 30DEC1871. Priscilla
was called Aunt Sis by my great aunts. She said America married John Ham, same
as you have said. She had no dates for that. She said the other girl was
Marian, not Maram. Interesting difference there between what you have and what I
do. She said one had a blind husband, but she didn't say which one. She
also said that James A Cheek married Permelia (Hall) Ellis!
ton. I don't understand the Elliston part, and their daughter married an
Elliston, so it is a little confusing even after all these years. James's father
(my gggg grandfather) was Shadrack Cheek. He was married to Mary Ann Rogers.
That's about all I know of that line.
You said you are descended from America Cheek. What relationship is she to
you? She is my gg aunt. Not so far removed. So what is our relationship? I
had a chart once that told how to figure it out, but unless I can know what
America is to you, I can't figure it out anyway.
So good to hear from you!

Thought I'd weigh in on this Cheek family. Listed below is census information in Perry County, Illinois for 1850 and 1860. You'll notice that James A. Cheek is listed in the 1860 census with children G.D.T Cheek (age 11), Priscilla (age 9), Marion and America (age 2) and Isaac G. (age 1 month). There is no John Cheek listed as a son (your John would have been about 15 at the time of this census). Also, I have the marriage date for James A. Cheek and Permelia Hall as March 29, 1849, which would have ruled Permelia out as your John Cheek's mother, unless he was born before marriage. Or Perhaps James Cheek was married before Permelia? There is a James Cheek listed in the 1850 Perry County census, but is this the same James A. Cheek listed in 1860? Perhaps it is possible that your John Cheek was a son of John Cheek, listed in the 1850 Perry County, Illinois census?

Stella,
Just had a thought. I have some pictures of America Cheek's relatives. Some I KNOW are Ellistons; from the writing on the back of the pictures. But there are others that just say "my mothers cousins"; written by my grandmother; America's daughter. I will get them together and maybe some will be your ancestors.
Do you have any old pictures?

Interesting that your line includes Sneeds and they are buried in a cemetery by the same name. Do you know of many of your family line who are from Hamilton County, Illinois?
Aunt Harriet said that someone tried to get Indian benefits once but found they did not have a large enough percentage of Indian blood. I am 1/64 Cherokee. I guess you are 1/32. In Oklahoma when we were living there (1971-1972), we found out we could have gotten a four bedroom house and a quarter acre of land for $8 a month if we had been at least 1/8 Indian. As you can see, I missed it by a long shot!
Thanks for posting your info and I will look forward to more.

Morning
Yes, I have heard and seen different names for America's twin, even Amerigo. I am America's great granddaughter. She died in 1924 or 1926; will have to check my records. I think there might have been some confusion on the Permelia Hall Elliston theory but I can check into what I have on the Ellistons and see if there WAS a Permelia - or however its spelled.
America's husband - John Ham WAS blind; later in life. He had two separate accidents while threshing wheat; or something like that. Between 1910 and 1920 the Hams moved to Jasper, Walker Co., Alabama - supposedly for America's health. I'm not so sure that it wasn't for my grandmothers sake. I have recently found out that my grandmother (Elmia) got married (in Illinois) and my great grandmother America didn't like the boy; grabbed my grandmother and off the family went to Alabama.
America wouldn't even let my grandmother get a divorce for several years. America was my fathers grandmother. What is ironic is that my MOTHER descends from the SNEED's that are in SNEED cemetery in Illinois.
Another Cheek researcher and I were pretty sure that James A. was the son of Shadrack and Mary Cheek. This may help on the search for Shadrack also.
In a nutshell:
James A. Cheek
m. Permellia Hall
daughter America Cheek
married John Ham
daughter Elmia Ham
married Ossie Emil (Jack) Storey
son Horace Storey
married Betty Sneed
daughter Susan Storey - thats me.
More later.

FINALLY!
There are more relatives out there! Just found your message today. 01/09/04.
I descend from America Cheek. She married a John Ham in Mt. Vernon, IL. America and Maram were twins. All I know about Maram was that she died young - before 20 yrs old I think. Priscilla married an Elliston and I have some info on that family as well as pictures of several of them.
I remember finding on one of the census records 1850 or 1860 - I will check to be sure; there was a "G.D.T." listed as a son and an "Issac" I think. I haven't found any trace of them and they weren't on the next census.
Do you have any info on Permelia Hall? The slight info I have which includes America's death certificate; indicates her father is James Cheek and her mother is "Mrs. Hall" as maiden name. I was wondering if Permelia had been married to a Mr. Hall first? - maybe the two children above were "Hall's"
What year was your "John" born?
