Dear Mallissa,
I didn't mean to imply that it was the same family group. i just thought it was interesting that another Cheek in another part of the country had married into the Godwin family name again. I still find it so. i was just giving you my information to show the comparrison.
Royce
P.S. As far asI am concerned all Cheek Families are some how related. The name goes back to a single source somewhere.
Does anyone know this gent or his family?:
I recently rec'd an a 10 page article from the Allen County Public
Library (IN) called "Memories and Ramblings of Edward Earl Cheek", written approx
1990.
He mostly describes his Cheek grandparents (using Ma and Pa Cheek; but
never their given names), but also discusses his aunts and uncles ... namely
an uncle Robert Cheek and his sister Columbia Cheek "who had a marriage to
Harry Rainey annulled", "was a schoolteacher", and "went to live with brother
Robert in Oklahoma" ... all of this seems to point to Robert Bruce Cheek and his
sister Columbia Frances Cheek (who briefly married a Hiram Nixon Rainey).
I, however, can find very little on this Edward Earl Cheek (the intro
to the article said he was married to a Laura), his parents, or the other
aunts/uncles he mentions (aunt Myra (Myra had a son Hiram and daughter Gladys),
cousin Clarence; Edward's father had siblings William/Willie, Bunyon, Robert,
Columbia).
There is also mention of an aunt Allie and aunt Lizzie (first husband
was a Dr. Brooks) ... but I have no clue if these were maternal or paternal
aunts.
On the 1930 census of Atlanta-Fulton Co-Georgia, Edward E. Cheek is
listed as age 15, born in GA; father born in GA; his widowed mother, Sallie, is
42 (she from Alabama; her father from England; her mother from Alabama) ...
and Edward's sister Cautez, age 19.
I ran Edward and his sister Cautez through the SSDI, and their birth
and death dates are as follows:
1) Edward E. Cheek, b.Feb 6, 1915 d. Nov 1, 1991 Pennsylv.
2) Cautez Wells, b. Apr 12, 1910 d. Aug 1984 Roswell, Fulton Co., Georgia
Any and all help would be very much appreciated. - Jeff Williams

Royce,
It does appear to be just a coincidence of two names. I have never made a connection to any Cheeks or Godwins in Decatur Co. Indiania. Of course, this is a line that I have had a tremendous amount of problems verifying info for. :) So, I could be wrong. That was why I was so excited to find a post about them.
Mallissa Godwin married Green Cheek on 20 December 1874 in Valdosta, Brooks Co. Georgia. I have made a requests to Brooks Co. for a copy of the marriage license but it hasn't been long enough to have received a response.
This particular Godwin/Cheek couple settled in Greer Co., Oklahoma.
Hope that answers your question.

Hi John,
That is interesting. I'm planning on taking a trip there this fall. From
the Cheek message board
I have noticed a few who were searching there Cheek- Cherokee connection
also. I recall a
message on there concerning an Indian village where the Cheek name is
held in high regard.
I will have to look for that again. Did your grandparents have Native
American features?
Mine doesn't look like any other Cheeks that I have seen, aside from the
big ears.
Well, I wish you luck in your search, thanks for replying!!

Hi:
I have a site with Cheek genealogy stuff that some of you may
find interesting. My genealogy site is named "Cheek Family - Marion
County AR & Forsyth Co, GA." Let me know if you're interested and I'll
send you an invitation and code to enter the site.
Also, I just became a proud new papa (See my announcement below).
Hooray, my new baby is finally out.
I named her Stay Safe, Buddy.
She didn't come from my wife, or sexy mistress (Mistress? At my
age, dream on John ).
OK, I confess. She's not a little human. She's a novel and she
came out of my head and heart. She is my firstborn (novel) though and I'm
real proud of her. Consider yourself as having received a cigar or sweet
chocolate.
You can see my firstborn, Stay Safe Buddy, at
www.publishamerica.com . Just type the title in the search area or my
author name of J. Charles Cheek. She's also available for purchase at
1-877-333-7422.
Subtitled A Story of Humor and Horror during the Korean War, the book is
based on my personal experiences as a soldier. Most of the action takes
place during the last seven months of the Korean War. Nearly all of the
characters are based or real people I knew and many of the incidents
actually occurred as described. Below is a short synopsis:
Promised that he won't have to fight in combat, instead of being
drafted for 2-years, 19-year old John Lefter enlists for a 3-year hitch
in the Army Security Agency and ends up in the Korean War. At first,
Lefter has a "candy ass" assignment 30 miles behind the fighting area. He
spends a lot of time drinking beer, laughing and partying.
Then he is forced to face his own mortality after being assigned
bunker duty in the fighting area.
He breaks down after his foul mouth buddy is hit with burp gun fire while
saving Lefters life. In a hospital psychiatry ward, his recovery is
aided dramatically by an innovative doctor and the only man he has ever
hated.
Back on the front line and atop the bunker celebrating just after
the cease-fire, Lefter is again confronted with a shocking incident that
takes him over fifty years to find closure.
My ego needs to have a lot of folks look at my firstborn, so please pass
this information on to anyone who may be interested. Order her at
www.publishamerica.com or 1-877-333-7422.
Thanks, John .
