I am new at this but here is my info. The Cheek name was from England. There
was a Sir John Cheek (Cheke) listed in the 1500's. I am spotty on the
intervening years but my family has it that two brothers came here and were
granted land in the Carolinas. I met a very distant cousin who claimed that
the Cheek family plantation was near Statesville, NC, and was split up by
"carpetbaggers" after the Civil War.
I too, have heard of lots of Cherokee relatives in the family. Any other
info would be welcome.

The below came from Indian Commission Files that I sent for as a
gamble. Norm Ricker and I can't find a link to our line but these may
be of help to someone. Please let me know if you have a connection.

Does the Cheek name originate only with Cherokee Indians or Creek Indians as
well? I always thought it was Cherokee, however, in my research the Cheek
name is also found with the Creek Indians. Or perhaps the name Cheek is
associated with a slave owner in N.C. Any further insights that could help
me limit my search would be helpful.
I am looking for my great grandmother Kate Cheeks said to be Indian or maybe
Indian/African American. She married Jerry Matthews and they had at least
one son, my great grandfather Lindo P. Matthews born 1878 somewhere in N.C.
Can anyone point me to some research sources on the Cherokee Cheeks of N.C.?
Perhaps knowing the counties in N.C. which had large populations of
Cherokees would be helpful.
I can be reached at master(a)quik.com
Please excuse my ignorance, I am very new at this.
With warm regards,
Celeste
I, like Celeste, am interested in hearing others' thoughts on the CHEEK
Cherokee connection. That has been my family tradition, from my Cheek
grandfather, that the family has Cherokee connections. My Cheeks were in
Culpeper Co., VA until 186?, when they removed to Brooke Co.
Thanks,

Cheek,OK in Carter County was named for a early pioneer named Rufus CHEEK.
The community in the late 1800's & early 1900's was a thriving commmunity
with cotton gins, school, churches, grocery stores & post office. The only
thing left there now is a Baptist Church & cemetery. Does anybody know
anything about Rufus or his family?
