Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I have just temporarily subscribed in order to post my query to your list.
Please respond via e-mail, as may CHEEK request is an incidental line and I
will probably not remain subscribed.
I am looking for information on the George CHEEK who married Celia
BREEDING. I have no other information on George. I suspect that he was
from Claiborne Co., TN and lived in in the mid to late 1800s. His wife,
Celia, was born in 1839 in Claiborne Co., TN and was living in Knox Co., TN
in the 1900s. I believe she may have been a widow by 1900.
I'm trying to run down the BREEDING clan that lived in Claiborne Co., and I
found that I have almost nothing on George CHEEK who married into the line.
I wish I had more, but I don't.
Thanks for your help!

Our family contends that there is a large amount of Cherokee in it. First
from the side of the John F. Bennett who was supposed to be full blooded, and
possibly the Cheek side, which married the Bennett's. This would stem from
Amos Cheek, b 1805 in NC then moved to NW Georgia, Chattooga County and bought
land that was once Cherokee land from which they were removed in the 1830's.
There is no record of an Amos Cheek in any census prior to GA, even though he
was married to Ann M. and had several children in NC. We believe he may have
moved to GA and adopted the name.
If any of this sounds familiar, or like something you may have in your files,
I would appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks

I know there were many CHEEKs who were Cherokee. What I don't know is whether the
name originated completely within the Cherokee Nation or was originally brought in
by marriage. Also, I have records of CHEEKs in the Shiwits Indians of SW Utah in
the 1880s. Again, I'm not certain of the origin of the name. That's one of the
purposes of my site at http://www.aros.net/~waynec.

I am a descendant of Richard Cheek and his wife Jane ? who lived in Beaufort
Co N. C before 1738. Their daughter Elizabeth married John Burney. Would like
to correspond with other descendants from this family.

Dear Dee,
There were a number of Cheek who were Cherokee, and I've found some in the
Guion Miller Rolls. But prior to researching them, I suggest you check out my
site, which includes some on-line Cherokee indexes and a Cherokee genealogy
tutorial. The tutorial will provide you all the info you need to begin your
search (for any surname).

I wondered the same thing.
